FROM THE SUMMITSUMMIT
6 MYTHS ABOUT BODY IMAGE AND DISORDERED EATING
In a world where magazines, television, and social media send many messages about what our bodies should or should not look like and what we should eat... knowing what is real can be challenging. These messages change our thinking and behaviors, and impact how we feel about ourselves. If you struggle with negative thoughts about your body or eating, you're not alone. Check out these common myths to challenge what you think!
  • MYTH #1 - LOSING WEIGHT WILL HEAL YOUR NEGATIVE THOUGHTS ABOUT YOURSELF A common belief is that changing your body or losing weight will change how you feel about yourself. In reality, losing weight will not cure your self-loathing or the stigma you place on yourself about your body. True healing comes from working on your thinking and emotions. Healing involves health of the mind and body.
  • MYTH #2 - BEING HEALTHY IS ABOUT EATING ALL THE RIGHT FOODS Normal eating takes place when eating is simply part of your life, not your entire focus. Healthy people tend to eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full by using intuitive eating. Our bodies are prewired with intuitive eating skills, we just have to slow down and listen. Sometimes, normal eating can mean feeling satisfied or even feeling stuffed and not giving it much after thought. Healthy eating is choosing nutritious foods, most of the time, that tastes good and make you feel good. Healthy eaters don't restrict themselves from fats or sweets, they simply eat what tastes good and makes them feel good.
  • MYTH #3 - DIETING OR STRICT EATING IS THE SOLUTION TO DISORDERD EATING Healing from an eating disorder does not involve dieting. In fact, dieting can exacerbate disordered eating or create new problems. Dieting may temporarily reduce behaviors that occur as part of eating disorders, but dieting creates negative thoughts and patterns. Dieting is simply a band-aid that prevents working on the real issues with which you are struggling. * MYTH #4 - EVERY BODY SHOULD LOOK THE SAME Every person was made to be unique and no person looks the same. Comparing yourself to someone else might feel helpful, but it creates negative thinking and judgements about yourself. The next time you notice yourself comparing, take a step back and challenge yourself to describe your thoughts nonjudgmentally and factually based.
  • MYTH #5 - EXERCISE IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD DO BECAUSE OF SOMETHING YOU ATE Exercise is something you do for various health reasons and enjoyment. Exercise is good for us because it feels good to move. It's a great way to get in touch with your body and celebrate what it can do. Exercise is not a punishment for something you ate.
  • MYTH #6 - THESE CLOTHES DID NOT FIT, SO MY BODY IS THE PROBLEM All clothing is made differently, for different bodies. If something does not fit you in a store, it is not because something is wrong with your body. At times, you may not like the way a piece of clothing fits you, but it's the clothes that's the problem - not your body! Saying "this clothing is weird" is more empowering that judging your body.

If you or someone you love is struggling and would like to speak with the licensed school based therapist, Julia Harris, MS, LAPC, at Milton High School, contact the Summit Counseling Center by calling 678-893-5300 to schedule an appointment.
