Advancing Atrial Fibrillation Treatment
Researchers from FAU's College of Engineering and Computer Science, and collaborators, recently developed the first algorithm, called the iterative catheter navigation or ICAN, that can locate patient-specific ablation targets within the atria that does not require specialized catheters or 3D electro-anatomic maps of the heart.

FAU Research Leadership Retreat
About 45 people from across the university gathered Friday at the Spanish River Library for the 2019 FAU Research Leadership Retreat.
The theme of this year’s event was moving FAU research teams toward large-scale grant funding. The day-long retreat identified a number of large-scale projects FAU could pursue and university needs that must be filled in order to pursue them.
Christophe Marchand, Ph.D., health science administrator for the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Research Strategy and an expert on team science, presented “Eight Elements of Building Successful Team.” He discussed important elements of leading successful teams, including setting a vision, building trust, diversity, mentoring, navigating conflict and communications. New Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College Associate Dean
Laura Vernon, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, was recently named the associate dean of Academic Affairs and Research of the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at Jupiter campus.
Vernon is a clinical psychologist whose research focuses on treatment for psychological disorders. She also studies anxiety disorders, emotion, cognition and mindfulness. Her recent research examines the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based trauma
therapy, expressive writing treatment, brief peer-administered mindfulness interventions, mindfulness’ influence on memory, the contributions of movement to emotional responses to animals, online measurement of symptoms, and the cognitive processes of emotion and phobias.
