We have settled into our new home at Pacific Oaks College's
Center for Community & Social Impact
, and would like to introduce our team.
Dr. Donald E. Grant Jr (left) has been with Pacific Oaks College for the past five years and has recently transitioned from serving as the Dean of the School of Human Development to launch the College's
Center for Community & Social Impact.
As its Executive Director. He brings with him years of experience in research and scholarship particularly around issues of social justice & equity.
Geoff Albert (center), our Community Engagement Specialist, will use his years of experience as an education advocate and parent & community engagement leader with the PUSD to strengthen our position in the community. Our Intern Herman Benn Jr (right) is our research and organization wizard who uses his vast experience in the hospitality industry to help keep us informed and on track. We also have a support network of student workers and students doing field work that bring with them an enthusiasm and drive to enrich our community.

On Monday, March 4th, we will be presenting our annual report to the joint meeting of the PUSD Board of Education and the Pasadena City Council at the Pasadena City Hall. The meeting starts at 6:30 pm and we are slated to appear 5th on
the agenda. Also appearing alongside us are our valued collaborators from Pasadena's
Office of the Young Child
and
Day One. Please come and show your support for all of us.

The month of March is
Women's History Month
, an annual declared month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.
The Pasadena Unified School District has passed a resolution declaring March as Women’s History Month. The Altadena Education Committee and Eliot Arts Magnet Academy invite you to join them for the 2nd annual celebration of Women’s History, the Women’s Movement, and Women’s Liberation

, Saturday March 1, 2018 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at Eliot Arts Magnet's Carl D. Roeder Auditorium 2184 N. Lake Avenue, Altadena.
The event will feature essays and artwork from PUSD middle schools' students as well as a Special Guest Panel which will include U.S. Representative Judy Chu, State Senator Anthony Portantino, Assemblymember Chris Holden, LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek, PUSD Superintendent Dr. Brian McDonald, and PUSD Assistant Superintendent Dr. Marisa Sarian.

Some of LA County's favorite food trucks are coming to ArtNight. As part of the GiveBack Program, these food trucks will donate 10% of their ArtNight proceeds to help support future ArtNights

PUSD Parent Survey (Coming Soon)

Every child deserves a quality education, and every parent has a right to have their voice heard
Your Opinion Matters
The California School Parent Survey for PUSD parents will go live next week and will be available for parents to fill out through the end of May. It is vitally important that
all
PUSD parent voices are heard. We encourage all those with kids in the PUSD to take the survey and for you to encourage your friends, coworkers and neighbors to do so as well. The survey is quite long (about 20 minutes), but the information gained is important. Results from past surveys have helped the school district improve school safety and implement new programs that address students well-being.
We will send out a separate email with a link to the survey as soon as it goes live.
The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), along with its two companion surveys–California School Staff Survey (CSSS) for staff and the California School Parent Survey (CSPS)–is a service of the California Department of Education (CDE). These three surveys form the California School Climate, Health, and Learning Surveys (CalSCHLS) System, the largest, most comprehensive state effort in the nation to regularly assess students, staff, and parents at the local level to provide key data on school climate and safety, learning supports and barriers, and stakeholder engagement, as well as youth development, health, and well-being.
These surveys grew out of CDE’s commitment to helping schools promote the successful cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of all students; create more positive, engaging school environments for students, staff, and parents; and ensure college and career readiness. They provide a wealth of information to guide school improvement and Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) efforts, particularly in regard to the state priorities of enhancing school climate, pupil engagement, parent involvement, and addressing the needs of vulnerable groups.

LIVELOUD is a new app for teens in Pasadena, sponsored by
Day One, with a mission for youth to feel valued, supported, and connected to their community.
The app (available on iTunes and Android) features:
- Resources (Partner agencies, Teen Jobs & Internships, Local Transportation)
- Notifications (Special Deals, News and Social Media)
- Activities (Local Businesses, Teen Hangouts, School Events)
When youth have access to local opportunities, they become empowered to make better decisions and are empowered to ask for help and know where to find it.

app go towards job development and continued app support!

Hamilton Elementary School teacher Nichole Anderson was recently presented with a Milken Educator Award by Milken Family Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Lowell Milken and Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent Brian McDonald. Anderson was named a 2018-19 recipient of the national recognition, which comes with an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize. She is the only Milken Educator Award winner from California this year and is among the 33 honorees. Anderson is the third PUSD teacher to win the Milken Educator Award, which is hailed by ‘Teacher” magazine as the “Oscars of Teaching.”

” said Milken. “
She is a welcome addition to the National Milken Educator Network.

As the computer lab teacher at Hamilton, Anderson helps students build technology skills that support all other areas of learning. Among the many technology skills Anderson shares with her students are: computer and web coding, typing and word processing, 3-D printing, robotics, internet safety, computer graphics creation, online research, and presentation technology. Anderson also promotes professional development among her colleagues, trains staff on technology, and serves on multiple educational committees as well as organizing weekly assemblies and tech fairs.

The Milken Educator Awards
has been opening minds and shaping futures for over 30 years. Research shows teacher quality is the driving in-school factor behind student growth and achievement. The initiative not only aims to reward great teachers, but to celebrate, elevate and activate those innovators in the classroom who are guiding America’s next generation of leaders. Milken Educators believe, “The future belongs to the educated.”
Milken Educators are selected in early to mid-career for what they have achieved and for the promise of what they will accomplish. In addition to the $25,000 prize and public recognition, the honor includes membership in the National Milken Educator Network, a group of more than 2,700 top teachers, principals, and specialists dedicated to strengthening education.
In addition to participation in the Milken Educator Network, 2018-19 recipients will attend a Milken Educator Forum in New Orleans from March 21-24, 2019. Educators will have the opportunity to network with their new colleagues and hear from state and federal officials about maximizing their leadership roles to advance educator effectiveness.
The Awards alternate yearly between elementary and secondary educators. Unlike most teacher recognition programs, the Milken Educator Award is completely unique: Educators cannot apply for this recognition and do not even know they are under consideration. Candidates are sourced through a confidential selection process and then are reviewed by blue ribbon panels appointed by state departments of education. Those most exceptional are recommended for the Award, with final approval by the Milken Family Foundation.
Past recipients have used their Awards to fund their children’s education or their own continuing education. Others have financed dream field trips, established scholarships, and even funded the adoption of children.

LevelUP3, the two-day Youth Leadership Conference presented by the Youth Leadership Network, a collaborative group of youth-serving organizations in Pasadena, is coming back this year, to the Pacific Oaks College on Thursday and Friday, July 18-19, for youth ages 12-18 at no cost to them. The event will feature top speakers and trainers in the Pasadena area. Last year, more than 100 young people participated and we anticipate doubling that number this year!
