Supporting the local agriculture food industry

The Economic Development Division, Agriculture and Rural Affairs recently launched a Local Food Business Retention and Expansion project for the Region of Durham, which will support local business development and job creation in the agri-food sector.

Trained volunteers will be conducting confidential interviews with a variety of local agricultural businesses to understand needs, concerns and opportunities for producers, manufacturers, distributors, and food service providers within Durham Region. These survey responses will then be analyzed to identify opportunities to improve the local agri-food sector in Durham Region.

Businesses within Durham Region, which represent any part of the local food chain, are encouraged to participate. Volunteers are also being sought to assist with business interviews.
For more information, or to participate, contact Lisa MacKenzie, Agriculture Program Co-ordinator at [email protected] or 905-668-4113 ext. 2615.

Spotlight on: Durham Mountain Biking Association

Fat biking has become increasingly popular over the past several years, and this is certainly true in Durham Region. Durham Region has an avid biking community, along with several biking clubs and associations, including the Durham Mountain Biking Association (DMBA). Founded in 2005, DMBA creates, enhances and preserves trail opportunities for mountain bikers in Durham and York regions. In addition to hosting regular group rides, family oriented events in the spring and fall, and advocacy work, DMBA members spend a lot of time developing and maintaining trails throughout Durham.

With fat biking season in full effect, DMBA members have been busy over the past months maintaining two loops of single track, which are winter groomed in Durham Forest's main tract, located in the township of Uxbridge.

For more information on DMBA, including current trail conditions, group rides and events, visit their website at durhammountainbiking.ca. You can also check out our recent  fat biking blog article on durhamtourism.ca.
