Local Wellness Policies: Just the Facts
The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently updated the local school wellness policy (LWP) requirements that went into effect in July 2017 (beginning school year 2017-2018). The LWP is designed to align with the updated nutrition standards for school meals, snacks, and beverages, and to address nutrition education, marketing of unhealthy food and beverages, physical activity, physical education, recess, and other school nutrition and physical activity practices and policies, including school parties and rewards.

Applicants Sought for 2018 CLIK Program
The University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health, the Kentucky Office of Rural Health and the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Community Engagement and Research Program are requesting applications for the 2018 Community Leadership Institute of Kentucky (CLIK). CLIK is a four-week intensive leadership development training program offered in Hazard, Kentucky. This event is the top national training and networking event for farm to cafeteria professionals working to improve community health, build economic opportunities for farmers and producers, and ensure long-term sustainability for local food efforts nationwide. To ensure the conference reflects the full diversity of the movement, scholarships are prioritized for farmers and farm support organizations, farm to college/hospital practitioners, early care and education providers, food service professionals, persons of color, and youth (through age 22). Generation Rx Grant Opportunities
The Cardinal Health Foundation has announced three requests for proposals for their Generation Rx Grant, targeting four of the states that have been especially hard hit by the opioid epidemic:
- Prevention Education for Youth: Grants will be available to organizations in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. They anticipate funding 30-50 programs at $25,000-$35,000 each.
- Best Practices in Pain Medication Use: Grants will be available to organizations in Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia. They anticipate funding 20-30 programs at $25,000-$50,000 each.
- Community-Level Response: These grants will be available only to communities in Ohio. They anticipate funding 5 communities at $75,000-$100,000 each.

Kentucky Youth Empowerment System (YES) Mini Grant Application
Any youth group interested in implementing youth-led alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention activities are invited to complete a YES Grant Application through their Regional Prevention Center. Grants up to $2,000 are awarded on an annual basis. Groups must consist of youth in grades 9-12; however, 6-8th grade youth may participate in partnership with high school aged groups.

Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a request for proposals for the Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) Cooperative Agreement Program. This program provides funding to support community-based organizations that collaborate and partner with local stakeholder groups as they develop and implement solutions to environmental and/or public health issues for underserved communities. Special consideration will be given to high ranking proposals to be performed in rural areas, as defined by the program.
Grant award: EPA anticipates awarding one cooperative agreement of $120,000 within each of the 10 EPA Regions.
Eligibility: Incorporated non-profit organizations, federally recognized tribal governments or tribal organizations.
