H-F FYI - Aug. 15, 2017

School Resumes Wednesday, Aug. 16
Welcome back! Wednesday, Aug. 16, will be a full day of attendance with early period classes starting at 7:30 a.m., 2nd period classes begin at 8:30 a.m. The first block day of the school year will be Tuesday, Aug. 22. Please click here to view the daily schedule...

Teachers returned on Monday, Aug. 14, and gathered for professional development and the first all-staff meeting of the school year. Some important new info shared there is also important for parents to know for this school year:
  • Recognizing that some students may benefit from the opportunity to destress, staff will now allow students to listen to music via their earbuds and headphones in the cafeterias, including during lunchtime.
  • The school added 750 Google Chromebooks to campus and increased the district's bandwidth threefold over the summer!
  • H-F is introducing a new character-development program this school year: Viking Values. This program is designed to advance students' ethical, emotional and social development by presenting the following character traits throughout the school year: Perseverance, Empathy, Awareness, Compassion and Effort (PEACE). Each value will be highlighted throughout the school year, beginning with Perseverance, through VTV, school publications and social media. Students and staff will be able to nominate others for demonstrating the value to help provide recognition and encouragement.
AROUND CAMPUS: Construction Update
While access to both parking lots on campus is now open, please note that construction continues near the North Building on Governors Highway, so please use care when driving around campus. Also, as a refresher for returning parents and update for new parents, please read below:

NORTH BUILDING
The student drop-off zone for the North Building is on the north side of the building. Vehicles may enter the North Parking lot via the access road from the South Building and turn left at the stop sign to proceed to the north drop-off zone. Vehicles may also enter the North Building parking lot from Governors Highway and proceed to the north drop-off zone. After dropping off, cars will return to Governors Highway. Please note: The access road between buildings becomes a one-way, east-bound drive at 7:15 a.m. then closes for the school day at 8:30 a.m. For picking up your student at the North Building, please enter from Governors Highway.

SOUTH BUILDING
At the South Building, students may be dropped off at Door 1 by using Viking Drive on the west side of the building, or they may be dropped off at Door 12 on the north side of the building, which is the gym entrance. For picking up your student at the South Building, please enter the lot driveway near the Varsity Baseball field.  There are three ways to exit the South Building parking lot:
  • The exit at the stoplight near Viking Drive allows vehicles to turn north or south onto Kedzie Ave.
  • The exit near the varsity baseball field allows vehicles to turn only north onto Kedzie Ave.
  • Vehicles may also use the access road and exit the North Building parking lot onto Governors Highway.

Back-to-School Night: Aug. 24
Parents, it will soon be time to head back to school to experience your teen's school day.
Back-to-School Night will be held Thursday, Aug. 24, at H-F. Please plan to arrive around 6 p.m. to allow for parking and seating. The evening will kick off with a brief, but important, presentation at 6:30 p.m. in the South Gym. You will then attend each of your student's classes during the next two hours. Class periods will last 10 minutes with 8-min. passing periods. You will get to walk your student's daily schedule and meet teachers, staff and administrators along the way. As the classes are short, faculty will not be able to address individual questions regarding student performance this evening. If you have specific questions regarding your student, please schedule an appointment with the appropriate teachers. Wear your walking shoes, as you may be going back and forth between buildings, depending on your student's schedule!
