National Heights Baptist Church ~ E-News     January 2018

January is a great month both to reflect and look forward. That is certainly the case here at NHBC. God did some amazing things in 2017. Members of National Heights participated in mission trips in Tampa and Guadalajara. We were able to give $74,674.95 to missions here at home and around the world. We ministered to families through food baskets, benevolent gifts, and more. We partnered with outstanding ministries such as Grand Oak, Ronald McDonald House, and Ozark Food Harvest to multiply the impact of our giving and work. Through our Envision effort, we have raised $243,640.61 to date toward the improvements in our youth, preschool and children, and welcome areas.
Most importantly, God has transformed lives and hearts through the power of His gospel. The new year promises exciting days as well, as we watch God work through His people. Early in 2018, we will see the completion of construction drawings and begin preparations for accepting bids for our new remodeling. Ministry highlights for the coming year will include continued progress in our Next Step ministries including our new Blessing Box, a youth international mission journey to Malta, a financial seminar in January (God Owns It All) and much more. I can't wait to see what God is going to do through you in 2018!

New Ministry
The NHBC Blessing Box has been installed near the Norton entrance to the church.  Throughout the year, church members will have opportunity to help fill the box with items to minister to those in need in our community.  In addition, the box will contain a notebook for prayer requests, information about our church, and Bibles. Please pray for this ministry as God continues to use it.  A very special thank you to Marshall Brown for building the box!
BLANKET COLLECTION FOR GRAND OAK MISSION
Think how COLD you would be if you did not have adequate quilts or blankets. COLD!!!  Women on Mission will be sponsoring a blanket collection for Grand Oak Mission Center during the entire month of January. They are in great demand the cold winter season. The blankets may be of any size and may be new or "gently used."  PLEASE PLACE IN THE TUBS AT THE CHURCH ENTRANCES BEGINNING SUNDAY, JANUARY 7. Thank you so much!
CPR/First Aid Class
Brian Miller will be leading a CPR/First Aid class on Friday January 19 at 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. This is a great way to learn to save a life or refresh rusty skills you may have previously learned.  Space is limited so please sign up early. A Sign-up sheet is in the office. Cost for certification card and book will be $20.50 each person.

JENNIFER ROTHSCHILD VISITS WOM VIA VIDEO
On Tuesday, January 9, Women on Mission will have an unusual opportunity as they gather in fellowship hall.  Jennifer Rothschild will be sharing, via video presentation, her personal testimony of "Walking by Faith" at about 10:45. Becky Bennett, program leader, will be in charge as we gather for our first meeting of 2018. What a wonderful beginning for a new year.  Many of you have heard Jennifer in person at local retreats and will appreciate getting to hear her again. She is a Springfield native who speaks out for her Lord.  She is also physically blind but she shares life experiences that have led her to walk by faith. Our Women on Mission theme this year is "Steppin' Out in Faith" so this will be an appropriate beginning for the first program of the New Year of 2018. Come join us for this video presentation.
The morning's activities begin at 9:30 with the business session led by Presidents Judy Divine and Doris Whitcher. Reports will be given and evaluations will be shared regarding the recent Christmas outreach/ministering activities as well as discussing upcoming ministries.  During the month of January Women on Mission will sponsor a church wide "Blanket Collection" for Grand Oak Mission Center.
A coffee/snacks/share time will be from about 10:15 until 10:45. Hostesses for January 9 are Patti Crocker and Delores Thompson.  Everyone is welcome to attend and encouraged to do so.
How can you find out if church is cancelled?
During the winter season we all know how unpredictable the weather can be.  If we cancel services, we publicize the announcement as soon as the cancellation is made.  You can find out about cancelled services many ways- Check our web page @ nationalheights.org or our Facebook page. If you receive the E-News, you will receive an email. You can call the church office at 833-4111 and listen for the recording.

WOMEN ON MISSION SCHEDULE WORK DAY
On Tuesday, January 23, at 9:30 a.m. WOM will have a work day in fellowship hall. The morning will be spent working on quilts and making salvation bracelets.   All women of the church are invited. Darlene Gideon is in charge of the tacking of quilts for Grand Oak Mission Center. Our church is one of a few churches in Greene County Baptist Association that still make quilts for Grand Oak. The leaders there always express the great need and appreciation for the quilts. (Our WOM is always in need of quilt tops that are ready to be tacked. (They do need to be bed sizes: twin, full or queen.) The group takes these tops and tacks them and finishes the edges as gifts to Grand Oak Mission.  If you have one to donate or would be interested in making one, please contact Darlene. Each year our group makes about 15 large quilts, and 75 baby/children's quilts for the Center. Mary McLemore is in charge of the baby quilts.
Also on January 23 some of the women will be working on making salvation bracelets under the direction of Doris Whitcher. These are used by mission teams from Greene County Baptist Association that go to Mexico and other countries during the summer season. Last year our church made about 4,500 bracelets, with the help of the youth and some extra ordinary efforts. All were used this past summer. Our own Rob Chandler gave away a number of them. They are a real entre' to both children and adults in the process of "getting acquainted" and preparing new individuals for the sharing of the gospel.
A coffee/snacks/share time will be under the direction of hostesses Mary McLemore and Doris Whitcher.  Come and enjoy the fun and the work on January 23! You'll be glad you came.

A very special thanks to the church family for all the visits, phone calls, cards, and other expressions of care and encouragement through all the many years of Carlene's illness and passing.  She loved her church friends. They were so very special to her all through the 50+ years she was a member at East Avenue and National Heights.  Your encouragement and prayers have meant so much to the family.  Thanks for the green plant from our NHBC family.
~The McCall family - Jerry, Kim & Greg
