Between the Holidays Phenomenon

What's Up with all the Calls?

Now that we are "between" the holidays, the staff always notices  the same phenomenon. Our office starts getting more calls during the first few weeks of December than any other time of year about Medicaid Planning.

There is an easy explanation for this yearly occurrence. It's one of the few times of the year when all of the "out of town" kids are back at the family home; and together they start noticing a few warning signs of what could be the onset of dementia in mom or dad.

They discuss the disease's warning signs -- and what it could mean to the loved one and the family if it is Alzheimer's or dementia. After they research the costs of nursing home care, they decide to call our office to learn more about long term care planning.

The Importance of Trust Funding

There are four important steps to funding your Trust.

Many of our estate planning clients have chosen to use a Revocable Living Trust as a way to avoid probate of their estate as much as possible when they pass on.
Unfortunately, just having the documents set up is not enough to avoid probate. The process of "Trust funding," meaning retitling assets or changing beneficiaries to make sure they work in conjunction with the Trust and overall plan, has to be an ongoing process. As assets change, the new assets have to also be titled properly and/or have the correct beneficiaries.

In order to make sure the Trusts are and remain properly funded, our office takes several steps. In some cases, our clients are already working with experienced financial advisors trained in Trust planning when we put together their legal documents, and those advisors are taking the lead in making sure those Trusts are properly funded. In those cases, please contact your financial advisor about the status of your accounts. In those cases when there isn't a financial advisor who has been specifically trained in Trusts and therefore not taking the lead in trust funding (which is most of our cases), our office takes several steps to make sure that our clients know and understand proper trust funding on an ongoing basis so they can properly fund their own Trust:

Durham Bulls

2017 was a great year to be a fan of the  Durham Bulls. It would be hard to find
two bigger fans than Jeff and Kathy. You can find them at most of the home games in their regular seats behind home plate.  Season tickets have already been purchased for next year.

Jeff and Kathy at home watching the Triple-A National Championship game that was played near Scranton, Pennsylvania. The picture below was taken moments before the Bulls cliched the championship.

I DO !!!

Lots of weddings and I do's in 2017.

Jeff and Kathy took some time to enjoy the post-nuptial celebration.

We Did!

I can't believe I ate the whoooole thing!

Kathy and Jeff went on their annual trek to Vegas and visited their favorite restaurant, Hash House A Go Go, home of the monstrous-sized sandwiches. It took Kathy 3 full meals to finish her lunch (below).

Jeff and Kathy enjoyed a few tailgating events before a number of concerts and festivals they attended this year.

One of the events was the Renaissance Festival, an annual favorite.

Froggy Fever

Ginsburg and Brandeis got a new aquarium this year. They seem a lot more active, jumping-wise, now that they have room to stretch their legs - especially when going after the crickets during meal time.

Monty Mania

We always end our newsletter with a picture (or two) of Monty. This year our beloved feline turned 15. He doesn't look a day over ten!

Warm Monty -- he hates the cold.

Pensive Monty.

Playful Monty.

Silly Monty -- as he readies for the eclipse.

Irritated Monty -- wanting Kathy to stop working and pay
attention to him.
