| General Membership Meeting 2018 |
 The 2018 General Membership Meeting was held on Sunday, March 11, 2018 after church services. The meeting was opened with a prayer led by Fr. Nareg Terterian.
Ms. Anahid Ugurlayan was voted as the Chairlady of the day and Mr. Sevan Yekhpairian as the Vice Chairman. Dr. Louiza Kubikian was voted as the recording Secretary.
Mr. Harry Seoylemezian addressed the meeting as a member of the Executive Council of the Prelacy. Fr. Nareg Terterian presented the Pastor's report and focused on two major programs - Sunday School and Salt & Light Youth Group that were accomplished in 2017.
The Chairman's report was prepared by Dr. Aram Cazazian. He took the opportunity to give thanks to everyone for their continuous support for our Church and community.
A detailed Treasure's Report was given by Mrs. Sonya Nenejian. The Auditing Committee report was presented by Mr. George Tavitian.
The Nominating Committee report was presented by Dr. Arthur Kubikin and Mrs. Annette Givelekian.
The Church Members elected, the following members to serve on the Board of Trustees: Mrs. Amy Gostanian, Mr. Michael Gostanian, Mr. Ruben Daglyan, Mr. Harry Seoylemezian, Mr. George Tavitian and Mrs. Natalie Meneshian as an alternate. Mrs. Nayda Voskerijian was re-elected as delegate for the National Representative Assembly.
The Auxiliry Bodies Report was presented by: Mrs. Sonya Nenejian for Salt & Light Youth Group, Ms. Anahid Ugurlayan for the Choir and Mrs. Annette Givelekian for the Saturday School.
The Membership Meeting was concluded by Fr. Nareg Terterian closing prayer.

Saint Sarkis Girls are The Armenian Churches Sports Association Champoins

Following an uplifting win over Sts Vartanantz girls team in the playoffs, the best Girls team coaching staff and players started preparations to play against the best girls' team in the league, the St. Leon Girls for the Championship.
A perennial power house in the Girls program and undefeated this year, the St. Leon team is very talented and well coached. The teams had met twice during the regular season and experience and coaching prevailed both times with St. Leon winning the 1
st
game 41-40 and the 2
nd
game 46-38, overcoming a Saint Sarkis half time 7 point lead.
This being the 1
st
championship appearance for Saint Sarkis Girls, many players were nervous and apprehensive to play against the hereto undefeated St. Leon. The nervousness showed in the 1
st
period of play, with Saint Sarkis Girls playing well but missing on their scoring opportunities.
The defense was good throughout the entire game, anchored by centers Alex Kasparian, Nicole Mark and Juliet Hagopian, while the rest of the team were constantly sniping at the ball, looking for fast break opportunities.
The 1
st
quarter ended with an early 10-4 St. Leon lead, and many Saint Sarkis fans and parents started to feel a little disheartened, knowing the difficult task of overcoming a big lead against a great team like St. Leon.
By the end of the 2
nd
quarter, the game settled into a fast rhythm, both teams playing an exciting fast game at both ends of the court.
Past their initial anxiety, the Saint Sarkis Girls, led by Breanna and Stephanie Shulman and Isabel Hagopian started the 2
nd
half with a 9-0 scoring run and after taking a short lead, entered the 4
th
quarter trailing by 1 point 27-28.
Loud partisan cheering from parents, relatives and fans once again inspired the Saint Sarkis Girls to score the first 9 points in the 4
th
quarter, taking a 42-33 lead, and with the St. Leon Girls in a foul shot penalty situation, they did not relinquish the lead, finishing with an upset 45-38 final score victory.
The final buzzer was welcomed with the whole team jumping and hugging each other, immediately joined by ecstatic parents and fans.
Commenting on the game, a League official stated that this was the best played and most exciting Girls championship game in his 20 years with the League.
In the ceremonies following the game, St. Leon received the regular season 1
st
place trophy and the Saint Sarkis team was handed individual trophies as well as the championship trophy.
Stephanie Shulman, Isabel Hagopian and Breanna Shulman from Saint Sarkis and Maddy Kackikian and Adrine Najarian were selected for the all-tournament All Star team, Breanna being further awarded the tournament MVP trophy.
Following the award ceremonies, the victory celebration continued with a luncheon at the Armenian Society Center with coaches, parents and players expressing their joy for the day and hopes for a good season next year. Like the impending spring, joy and hope was in the air.

"The Book of Whispers"

On Saturday, March 10, 2018 St. Sarkis Church in cooperation with the Romanian Armenian Society of New York, sponsored an evening with Dr. Varoujan Vosganian, author of "The Book of Whispers." Considered an international phenomenon, this novel has been translated in 20 languages including English and twice was sponsored for Nobel Prize in Literature by the Israeli, Romanian and Armenian Writers Associations.
The novel is the true story of Dr. Vosganian's grandparents who survived the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey, relocated in Romania, and refused to forget this calamity. It is in many ways evocative of the common trauma of the Armenian people as well of the general human suffering characteristic of the 20
th
century.
Dr. Vosganian, a PhD economist by training, is also author of many economic and literary texts, serving presently as Prime-Vice President of the Union of Writers in Romania. He has been a member of the Romanian Parliament since 1990 and has served as Minister of Economy and Finance. He has been recognized for his achievements with three awards, from the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the "Nerses Shnorali" Order from Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians and "Knight of Cilicia" designation by Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia.
The evening program started with an invocation by His Grace Bishop Anoushavan Tanielian, after which an attendance of more than 76 people enjoyed a mesmerizing presentation by Dr. Vosganian followed by a book signing and refreshments. Among the attendees was also Queens City Councilman Paul Vallone and his family. It was especially meaningful for him as his wife is also Armenian.

On Saturday, March 10th, 2018 Salt & Light Youth Group met for their 4th Session. The topic of discussion was Follow Me. We started the afternoon by enjoying a meal together and then broke out into six small groups. There were 40 kids in total who attended this session. After our session ended, we all gathered in the Main hall for cake and sang Happy Birthday to Der Nareg!

Salt & Light is a fun youth group where every few weeks we meet up with our mentor and some of our closest friends. I always look forward to Salt & Light because of all the things we talk about in our groups. Each week I learn more and more about all of my friends... from our friendships, to scars and becoming closer to God, there is never a time where I don't have fun. I always have the best time! I love being with my group and mentor.

THE EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE COLOSSIANS (2.8-3.17)
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.
When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.
Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Զգոյշ եղէք, որ ոեւէ մէկը ձեր միտքը չգրաւէ իմաստասիրական տեսութիւններով եւ խաբեբայական սին խօսքերով, որոնք մարդկային աւանդութիւններու եւ բնութեան ոյժերուն վրայ կը հիմնուին եւ ո՛չ թէ Յիսուս Քրիստոսի ճշմարիտ վարդապետութեան վրայ: Որովհետեւ մարդացած Քրիստոսի մէջ կը բնակի աստուածային բնութեան ամբողջ լիութիւնը: Եւ դուք ձեր կեանքին լիութիւնը գտաք՝ միանալով անոր, որ գլուխն է ոգեղէն աշխարհի բոլոր իշխանութիւններուն ու պետութիւններուն: հաւատքի ճամբով երբ Քրիստոսի միացաք, դուք ձեր մեղքերը թօթափեցիք եւ Քրիստոսի թլփատութեամբ ստացած եղաք սրտի թլփատութիւնը: Մկրտուելով՝ անոր հետ միասին թաղուեցաք, եւ անոր հետ ալ յարութիւն առիք, քանի հաւատացիք Աստուծոյ զօրութեան, որ զայն մեռելներէն յարուցանեց: Քրիստոսի հետ Աստուած ձեզ ալ կենդանացուց, քանի դուք հոգեւորապէս մեռած էիք ձեր մեղքերուն պատճառով, որովհետեւ անթլփատ հեթանոսներ էիք: Այո, Աստուած ներեց մեր բոլոր յանցանքները եւ իր իշխանութեամբ ջնջեց մեր օրինազանցութեան համար մեզի դէմ արձակուած դատապարտութեան վճիռը, զայն խաչափայտին գամելով: Այսպիսով անիկա զինաթափ ըրաւ ոգեղէն աշխարհի իշխանութիւններն ու պետութիւնները, յայտնապէս խայտարակելով ու պարտութեան մատնելով զանոնք Քրիստոսի ձեռքով, անոր յարութեան ատեն:
Կարեւորութիւն մի՛ տաք անոնց որոնք ձեզ կը քննադատեն թէ ինչո՛ւ չէք պահեր ուտելու եւ խմելու, տօնակատարութեանց, ամսամուտերու եւ Շաբաթ օրերու վերաբերող կանոնները. որովհետեւ այդ բոլորը գալիք իրականութեանց շուքն էին, իսկ իրականութիւնը Քրիստոսի մէջ է:
Չըլլայ որ ոեւէ մէկը իր խստակրօնութեամբ, հրեշտակներուն տուած կարեւորութեամբ եւ զանազան բաներու տեսիլքներով ձեզ մոլորեցնէ եւ մրցանակէ զրկէ. որովհետեւ այդպիսիները մարդկային հպարտութենէ տարուած են եւ կ՚ուզեն իրենք զիրենք պարտադրել ձեզի: Անոնք կապ չունին Գլուխին՝ Քրիստոսի հետ. մինչդեռ մարմինը՝ Քրիստոսի եկեղեցին, իր բոլոր յօդերով ու խաղերով գլուխին կապուած ու միացած, անկէ կ՚առնէ իր աճումը, Աստուծոյ կամքին համաձայն:
Քանի Քրիստոսի հետ մեռաք եւ բնութեան ոյժերու տիրապետութենէն դուրս եկաք, ինչո՞ւ կը շարունակէք ապրիլ այնպէս՝ որպէս թէ ձեր կեանքը աշխարհէն կախում ունենար, եւ կը հնազանդիք մարդոց կողմէ տրուած եւ ուսուցուած պատուիրաններու, ինչպէս. «Մի՛ մօտենար, մի՛ ուտեր, մի՛դպչիր», եւայլն: Ասոնք բոլորն ալ բաներ են՝ որոնք գործածութեամբ կը փճանան: Այդպէս պատուիրողները իմաստուն կրնան թուիլ՝ իրենց բարեպաշտական ինքնակամ արտայայտութիւններով, խստակրօնութեամբ եւ մարմինը անխնայ կերպով ճնշելով, բայց այս բաները ոեւէ արժէք չունին եւ միայն մարմինը բաւարարելու կը ծառայեն:
Քանի որ յարութիւն առիք Քրիստոսի հետ, այսուհետեւ ձեր ուշադրութիւնը երկինք դարձուցէք, որովհետեւ հոն է Քրիստոս, Հօր աջ կողմը նստած: Երկնաւոր բաներու մասին խորհեցէք եւ ոչ երկրաւոր բաներու. որովհետեւ դուք այս աշխարհին համար մեռաք, որպէսզի Քրիստոսի հետ միասին ապրիք այն կեանքով որ Աստուած վերապահած է ձեզի: Իսկ երբ Քրիստոս՝ մեր կեանքը՝ յայտնուի, այն ատեն դուք ալ փառքով պիտի յայտնուիք անոր հետ:
Հետեւաբար մեռցուցէ՛ք ձեր մէջ երկրաւոր ցանկութիւնները, այսինքն՝ ձեզմէ դուրս վտարեցէք պոռնկութիւնը, պղծութիւնը, կիրքը, չար ցանկութիւնը եւ ագահութիւնը որ կռապաշտութիւն է. որովհետեւ այդ բոլորը Աստուծոյ անհնազանդ մարդոց գործերն են, եւ Աստուած պիտի պատժէ զանոնք: Նախապէս դուք ալ այդ բոլորը կ՚ընէիք, երբ տակաւին այդ ցանկութիւններով կ՚ապրէիք: Բայց հիմա ձեզմէ դուրս նետեցէք բարկութիւնը, զայրոյթը եւ չարութիւնը: Ձեր բերնէն ոեւէ հայհոյութիւն կամ լկտի խօսք չլսուի: Սուտ մի խօսիք իրարու: Մոռցէք ձեր հին կեանքն ու նախկին գործերը, եւ նոր մարդ եղէք՝ ձեր Արարիչին պատկերին համաձայն նորոգուելով, որպէսզի զԱստուած ճանչնաք: Անգամ մը որ նորոգուեցաք՝ ա՛լ չկայ հրեայ կամ հեթանոս, թլփատուած կամ անթլփատ, բարբարոս, վայրենի, ծառայ կամ ազատ. կայ միայն Քրիստոս, որ ամէն ինչ է եւ բոլորին մէջ:
Հետեւաբար, որպէս Աստուծոյ կողմէ ընտրուած ու սրբուած եւ իր սէրը վայելող մարդիկ՝ գթասիրտ եղէք. եղէք ողորմած, քաղցր, խոնարհ, հեզ եւ համբերատար: Իրարու հանդէպ հանդուրժող եղէք. եւ ներեցէք իրարու, երբ մէկդ միւսին դէմ տրտունջ մը ունենաք: Ինչպէս Աստուած Քրիստոսի միջոցաւ ներեց ձեզի, այնպէս ալ դուք իրարու ներեցէք: Եւ այս բոլորին վրայ՝ աւելի սէր ունեցէք, որովհետեւ սէրը ամէն ինչի ամբողջացուցիչ շաղախն է: Ձեր սիրտերուն մէջ Քրիստոսի խաղաղութիւնը թող թագաւորէ, որովհետեւ Աստուած այդ խաղաղութեան կանչեց ձեզ մէկ մարմնի մէջ, որ Քրիստոսի եկեղեցին է: Ուստի շնորհակալ եղէք Աստուծոյ:
Թող Քրիստոսի խօսքը ձեր մէջ բնակի իր ամբողջ հարստութեամբ, որպէսզի կատարեալ իմաստութեամբ սորվեցնէք իրարու եւ զիրար խրատէք, եւ սաղմոսներով, օրհնութիւններով ու հոգեւոր երգերով ձեր սիրտերուն մէջ շնորհակալութեամբ զԱստուած օրհնէք: Եւ ինչ որ ալ ընէք, խօսքով թէ գործով, միշտ Տէր Յիսուսի անունով ըրէք, անոր միջոցաւ գոհութիւն յայտնելով Հօր Աստուծոյ:
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW (22.34-23.39)
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?"
"The son of David," they replied.
He said to them, "How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says,
"'The Lord said to my Lord:
"Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
under your feet."'
If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
"Everything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called 'Rabbi' by others.
"But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.
"Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.' You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.' You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices-mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law-justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. And you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!
"You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.
"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. Look, your house is left to you desolate. For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
ՅԻՍՈՒՍ ՔՐԻՍՏՈՍԻ ԱՒԵՏԱՐԱՆԸ ԸՍՏ ՄԱՏԹԷՈՍԻ ( 22.34-23.39)
Երբ փարիսեցիները լսեցին թէ Յիսուս սադուկեցիները պապանձեցուց, իրարու քով եկան: Անոնցմէ մէկը, օրէնսգէտ մը, Յիսուսը փորձելու համար հարցուց. «Վարդապե՛տ, Օրէնքին մէջ ո՞րն է մեծագոյն պատուիրանը»: Յիսուս ըսաւ անոր. «"Սիրէ քու Տէր Աստուածդ ամբողջ սրտովդ, ամբողջ հոգիովդ եւ ամբողջ միտքովդ": Ասիկա է մեծագոյն եւ առաջին պատուիրանը: Երկրորդը ասոր նման է, "Սիրէ ընկերդ քու անձիդ պէս": Այս երկու պատուիրաններէն կախեալ են ամբողջ Օրէնքը եւ մարգարէութիւնը»:
Երբ փարիսեցիները հաւաքուեցան, Յիսուս հարցուց անոնց. «Ի՞նչ կը խորհիք Քրիստոսի, խոստացուած Փրկիչին մասին: Որո՞ւն որդին է ան»: Անոնք պատասխանեցին. «Դաւիթի»: Յիսուս ըսաւ անոնց. «Բայց ինչպէ՞ս Դաւիթ Ս. Հոգիով ներշնչուած՝ զայն Տէր կը կոչէ ու կ՚ըսէ.
«Տէրը իմ Տիրոջս ըսաւ.- աջ կողմս նստէ, մինչեւ թշնամիներդ ոտքերուդ տակ դնեմ որպէս պատուանդան»:
«Արդ, եթէ Դաւիթ զայն Տէր կը կոչէ, ինչպէ՞ս անոր որդին կ՚ըլլայ»: Ոչ ոք կրցաւ պատասխան տալ Յիսուսի. եւ այդ օրուընէ սկսեալ ոեւէ մէկը չէր համարձակեր իրեն հարցում ուղղել:
Ապա Յիսուս Ժողովուրդին եւ իր աշակերտներուն ըսաւ.
«Մովսէսի աթոռը նստան օրէնքի ուսուցիչներն ու փարիսեցիները: Իրենց ըսածներուն հնազանդեցէք եւ կատարեցէք զանոնք, սակայն մի՛ ընէք ինչ որ իրենք կ՚ընեն. որովհետեւ անոնք կը սորվեցնեն, բայց չեն կատարեր: Անոնք ծանր եւ դժուարակիր բեռներ կը դնեն մարդոց ուսերուն, մինչ իրենք նոյն բեռները կրելու նուազագոյն ճիգն իսկ չեն ըներ: Ինչ որ կ՚ընեն՝ մարդոց երեւելու համար կ՚ընեն: Իրենց գրպանակները կը լայնցնեն եւ իրենց հագուստներուն ծոպերը կ՚երկնցնեն: Ընթրիքներու ընթացքին պատուոյ տեղերը գրաւել կը սիրեն եւ ժողովարաններու մէջ՝ առաջին աթոռները: Կը սիրեն հրապարակներու վրայ մարդոցմէ բարեւներ ընդունիլ եւ «Վարդապետ», այսինքն «Ուսուցիչ» կոչուիլ: Բայց դուք ոեւէ մէկը «վարդապետ» մի կոչէք, որովհետեւ դուք բոլորդ եղբայրներ էք եւ մէկ ուսուցիչ ունիք: Երկրի վրայ ոեւէ մէկը «հայր» մի՛ կոչէք, որովհետեւ դուք մէկ Հայր ունիք, որ երկինքի մէջ է: «Առաջնորդ» մի՛ կոչուիք, որովհետեւ ձեր միակ առաջնորդը Քրիստոս է: Ձեր մէջէն մեծը թող ձեր սպասաւորը ըլլայ: Ով որ իր անձը կը բարձրացնէ՝ պիտի խոնարհի, եւ ով որ իր անձը խոնարհեցնէ՝ պիտի բարձրանայ:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորներ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ փարիսեցիներ, որ երկինքի արքայութիւնը կը փակէք մարդոց առջեւ. դուք չէք մտներ եւ թոյլ չէք տար նաեւ անոնց որ կ՚ուզեն մտնել:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորներ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ փարիսեցիներ, որ մէկ կողմէ այրիներուն տուները իրենց ձեռքէն կը յափշտակէք, միւս կողմէ կեղծաւորութեամբ ձեր աղօթքը կ՚երկարէք. ասոր համար աւելի խիստ դատապարտութիւն պիտի ընդունիք:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորներ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ փարիսեցիներ, որ մէկ կողմէ ծով ու ցամաք կը շրջիք մէկը նորահաւատ ընելու համար, իսկ երբ յաջողիք՝ զայն ձեզմէ կրկնապատիկ աւելի գեհենի արժանի կ՚ընէք:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կոյր առաջնորդներ: Կ՚ըսէք. «Ան որ տաճարին վրայ կ՚երդնու՝ երդումը կատարելու պարտաւորութեան տակ չէ, բայց ան որ տաճարին ոսկիին վրայ կ՚երդնու՝ պարտաւոր է կատարելու»: Յիմարնե՛ր, կոյրե՛ր. ո՞ր մէկը կարեւոր է, ոսկի՞ն թէ տաճարը, որ կը սրբագործէ ոսկին: Կամ կ՚ըսէք. «Ան որ զոհի սեղանին վրայ երդում կ՚ընէ երդումը կատարելու պարտաւորութեան տակ չէ, բայց ան որ կ՚երդնու սեղանին դրուած զոհին վրայ՝ պարտաւոր է կատարելու»: Յիմարնե՛ր, կոյրե՛ր. ո՞ր մէկը աւելի կարեւոր է. զո՞հը թէ զոհասեղանը, որ կը սրբագործէ զոհը: Հետեւաբար, ով որ կ՚երդնու սեղանին վրայ, կ՚երդնու թէ՛ սեղանին եւ թէ՛ հոն եղածներուն վրայ: Ով որ կ՚երդնու տաճարին վրայ, կ՚երդնու թէ՛ տաճարին եւ թէ Աստուծոյ վրայ, որ հոն կը բնակի: Նոյնպէս, ով որ կ՚երդնու երկինքի վրայ, կ՚երդնու թէ՛ Աստուծոյ գահին եւ թէ՛ Աստուծոյ վրայ որ հոն կը նստի:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորներ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ փարիսեցիներ, որ անանուխին, սամիթին եւ չամանին տասանորդը կու տաք եւ կ՚անտեսէք Օրէնքին կարեւոր պարտաւորութիւնները, այսինքն՝ արդարութիւնը եւ հաւատարմութիւնը: Ասոնք պէտք էր գործադրել, առանց միւսները անտեսելու: Կո՛յր առաջնորդներ, մէկ կողմէ մժղուկը կը քամէք, միւս կողմէ սակայն ուղտը կը կ՚ըլլէք:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորներ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ փարիսեցիներ, որ պնակին ու գաւաթին արտաքինը կը մաքրէք, մինչ գիտէք թէ ներսիդին եղող ուտելիքն ու խմելիքը ի՛նչ յափշտակութեամբ եւ աղտեղութեամբ ձեռք բերած էք: Կո՛յր փարիսեցի, նախ գաւաթին եւ պնակին ներսը մաքրէ. այսպիսով դուրսն ալ մաքուր կ՚ըլլայ:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորներ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ փարիսեցիներ, որ կը նմանիք կիրով ճերմկցուած գերեզմաններու, որոնք արտաքնապէս գեղեցիկ կ՚երեւին, բայց ներքնապէս լեցուն են մեռելներու ոսկորներով եւ ամէն տեսակի պղծութեամբ: Նոյնպէս էք դուք. արտաքնապէս մարդոց արդար կ՚երեւիք, բայց ներքնապէս լեցուն էք կեղծաւորութեամբ եւ անօրէնութեամբ:
«Վա՜յ ձեզի, կեղծաւորներ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ եւ փարիսեցիներ, որ մարգարէներու շիրիմները կը շինէք եւ արդարներուն գերեզմանները կը զարդարէք ու կ՚ըսէք. «Եթէ մենք մեր հայրերուն ժամանակը ապրած ըլլայինք, մարգարէներու սպանութեան մասնակից պիտի չըլլայինք»: Ահաւասիկ, դուք արդէն իսկ կը վկայէք թէ որդիներն էք անոնց՝ որոնք մարգարէները կոտորեցին: Գացէք ամբողջացուցէք ձեր հայրերուն կիսատ ձգած գործը: Օձե՛ր, իժերո՛ւ ծնունդներ, ինչպէ՞ս պիտի կարենաք փախուստ տալ դժոխքի դատապարտութենէն: Ահա, ես ձեզի մարգարէներ, իմաստուններ, օրէնքի ուսուցիչներ պիտի ղրկեմ. դուք անոնցմէ ոմանք պիտի սպաննէք, ոմանք պիտի խաչէք, ուրիշներ ժողովարաններու մէջ պիտի չարչարէք եւ հալածէք քաղաքէ քաղաք: Այսպիսով բոլոր արդարներուն սպանութեան մասնակից եղած պիտի ըլլաք, սկսեալ անմեղ Աբէլի արիւնէն մինչեւ արիւնը Բարաքիայի որդի Զաքարիայի, զոր սպաննեցիք տաճարին եւ զոհասեղանին մէջտեղ: Հաստատ գիտցէք, թէ այս բոլոր ոճիրներուն պատիժը պիտի կրէք դուք:
«Երուսաղէ՜մ, Երուսաղէ՜մ, որ կը կոտորէիր մարգարէները եւ կը քարկոծէիր Աստուծոյ քեզի ղրկած մարդիկը. քանի՜ անգամ ուզեցի որդիներդ հաւաքել, ինչպէս հաւը իր ձագերը կը հաւաքէ թեւերուն տակ, բայց դուք, Երուսաղէմի՛ բնակիչներ, չուզեցիք: Ահա, «աւերակ պիտի ըլլայ ձեր տունը»: Բայց կ՚ըսեմ նաեւ, ա՛լ պիտի չտեսնէք զիս մինչեւ որ ըսէք. «Օրհնեալ ըլլայ ան որ կու գայ Տիրոջ անունով»:

SUNDAY OF ADVENT
This Sunday, March 18, is the sixth and final Sunday of Great Lent, known as Sunday of Advent (Galstyan Kiraki). On Advent Sunday we are asked to ponder the mystery of the first coming of Christ and especially his second coming which is a fundamental tenet of our Christian faith, and which is mentioned in the prayers read this Sunday. Christ came to the world for the salvation of humanity. We are told to be ready at all times because He will come again for the judgment of sinners, and when the righteous will become worthy of entering the Kingdom of God. "Then people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. He will send out his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven." (Mark 13:26-27)
Advent Sunday has its own special hymn, which proclaims that the apostles knew the mystery of the advent of Christ. The story of the expulsion from paradise is repeated and an appeal is made to Christ to ask the Heavenly Father to establish peace on earth. Sunday of Advent is in preparation for next Sunday, Palm Sunday, which is the celebration of the glorious entry of our Lord into Jerusalem and the beginning of Holy Week.
The terrible manifestation of your glory which will be in your second coming David foresaw and announced beforehand by the Holy Spirit's inspiration, God will come openly, fire will burn before him. Then, O Jesus, spare us, have compassion, O Christ and have mercy.
Mother of God unwedded, bride of heaven on earth, when in the sight of light you sit at the right hand of your only-begotten beseech him for us to deliver us from the awful flame, to number us with the righteous that we also may sing glory with the heavenly ones.

ST. GREGORY'S COMMITMENT TO THE PIT
During Great Lent, saint days are commemorated only on Saturdays. During the remainder of the year saints can be honored on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays.
This Saturday, March 17, the Armenian Church celebrates one of the three days in its liturgical calendar devoted to St. Gregory the Illuminator, the patron saint of the Armenian Church. The three days are: Descend into the Pit, Emergence from the Pit, and Discovery of his remains. This Saturday is the commemoration of his commitment to the Deep Pit (Khor Virab).
Gregory maintained his faith and refused to renounce Christ. As a result he endured many tortures and his final punishment was banishment into a deep pit where he remained for a period of thirteen or more years. Miraculously he survived, thanks to his faith and according to tradition an angelic woman (identity unknown) who lowered food and water into the pit.
The Monastery of Khor Virab is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims who visit Armenia. The monastery was built on the exact location where St. Gregory was imprisoned. The pit is accessible and it is possible for visitors to climb down the ladder (27 steep steps) into the pit. The church, named Sourp Asdvadzadzin, dates to the 17
th
century. The area is one of the most beautiful in Armenia and provides stunning views of Ararat. The area surrounding Khor Virab is the site of the ancient Armenian capital, Artashat, founded by King Artashes I about 180 BC.
Come, let us exalt on this day the spreader of the spiritual light to us who sat in darkness, the holy patriarch Gregory. Come, you children instructed y him, exalt on this day the distributor to the sons of Torkom of the undefiled gifts of the Holy Spirit who gave us a new birth as sons of the light. Come, you children instructed by him, exalt on this day the interpreter of the divine word in the land of Armenia. On this day the Church and her children sing with the angels, on this day of memory of the enlightener ascribing glory to God in the highest.
