Mary's Meals Update

In May 2016, Clear Water Academy chose Mary's Meals Canada as our top designated charity, whose focus is to "feed every child a daily meal in their place of education."

Mary's Meals Canada specifically funds schools in Malawi, Africa, and the cost to feed a child a meal a day for a whole year is currently only $16.  Most of us spend that amount in a visit to the movie theatre or to buy one pizza!

A summary of our events:
CWA has held 2 Mary's Meals Blue Day fundraisers, had a special visit from its founder, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, in September 2016, and hosted an evening event open to the public, held other student-led and classroom fundraisers, and shared our 1st Oatmeal Day most recently in October.  In total, Clear Water Academy has helped raise nearly $17,000 in less than 2 years - feeding over 1,000 children!

A very big THANK YOU to our students and school community for your support of Mary's Meals Canada . Together, we will continue to help promote the good works of Mary's Meals, and work towards setting-up the sponsorship of a school in Malawi for this amazing cause!

May God Bless you, everyone!
Grade 7 & 8 Science Class

Monday and Tuesday saw our Grade 7 and 8 students complete their first Engineering Challenge! The students were placed into groups of either 3 or 4 and, with 5 minutes to plan and 30 minutes to build, had to construct a device that could move five "radioactive" golf balls, one at a time, from one paper bag to another without human contact. The only materials allowed were: 4 four-inch pieces of string, 4 drinking straws, 2 skewers, 4 paper clips, 4 rubber bands, 5 Post-It notes, 4 push-pins, 1 pencil and 1-foot length of tape.

The winners from each class were:
7G: Chioma, Kara, and Katrina (1 minute and 04 seconds)
7B: Edwin, David, Juan and Anthony (1 minute and 35 seconds)
8G: Pearl, Veronica and Sadhika (27 seconds)
8B: Alex H., Michael, Arturo and Robert (36 seconds)

The students mentioned above will receive  a certificate. Stay tuned for our next challenge that will take place in February!
