The NYCOMEC Hospital Day will take place on
May 4, 2018, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., in the Student Activity Center's Gymnasium, located on the Old Westbury Campus. At this event, DIOs,
DMEs, Program Directors, and faculty representing
AOA and ACGME training programs
from NYCOMEC member institutions will have the opportunity to meet with prospective trainees from NYITCOM and TouroCOM - class of 2019.

NYCOMEC Research Poster Competition: Call for Posters
NYCOMEC's 17th Annual Trainee Research Poster Competition will be held in conjunction with the NYCOMEC Spring Grand Rounds on
Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the LaGuardia Plaza Hotel located in East Elmhurst, NY.
All trainees from AOA and ACGME programs at NYCOMEC member institutions are invited to present their experimental research and/or case study posters.
Participants need to complete a
Poster Submission Form and send it to our office, along with the Word version of the poster's abstract, by
Friday, April 20, 2017, before midnight

2018 ACGME Annual Conference - Facilitating Collaboration and Shared Information
NYCOMEC had a significant presence at the 2018 ACGME's Annual Conference, with more than 30 graduate medical education (GME) leaders, faculty and staff from our member institutions attending. The conference took place at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, FL, from March 1 to March 4, 2018. NYCOMEC staff were also present, strategically attending the ACGME's diverse programming in order to convey pertinent information to those who could not attend, at future NYCOMEC faculty development programs, webinars, and other communication venues.
NYCOMEC Leadership Reception at the Annual ACGME Conference
On Friday, March 2, 2018, David Broder, D.O., President, NYCOMEC, welcomed approximately 35 NYCOMEC GME leaders to a hospitality reception at the trendy restaurant, Jack's Place, where attendees had the opportunity to network with their peers and discuss what they learned at the conference. James E. Swartwout, Senior Vice President, American Osteopathic Association, attended as our invited guest.
A key component to NYCOMEC's consortium membership is ongoing opportunities to speak with other GME leaders. NYCOMEC members found several opportunities to meet informally during the conference.

NYCOMEC Board Member Presented at ACGME Annual Conference
Catherine Caronia, M.D
., DIO/Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, and a member of NYCOMEC's Board of Directors, was invited to present at the 2018 ACGME's Annual Conference on March 2, 2018. Her lecture, titled
Developing Scholarly Activity in a Community Hospital Setting: A Multi-disciplinary Approach,
was presented a crowd of more than 200 graduate medical education leaders, educators and staff.

NYCOMEC-NYIT Healthcare Leadership Certificate Course
Shane Speights, D.O.,
Site Dean, NYITCOM at Arkansas State University, presented a lecture titled
Transition from Colleague to Supervisor
to more than 50 hospital staff and faculty from NYCOMEC member institutions at the Healthcare Leadership Certificate Course, which was held on March 6, 2018 at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. In his presentation, Dr. Speights discussed the challenges that can arise when someone is promoted to a supervisory capacity over his/her peers in the workplace. He outlined several issues that may be encountered and discussed strategies to mitigate them. A lively question and answer period followed.

The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) hosted on February 20, 2018, the webinar titled
The Single GME Accreditation System Update and Osteopathic Board Certification which provided the latest updates on the single GME accreditation system, including the latest progress of AOA programs in the transition, AOA board certification eligibility, osteopathic recognition, AOA fellowship eligibility, and the AOA's commitment to protecting residents during the transition.

The Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Award Program
Recent updates about the State-funded Regents Physician Loan Forgiveness Award Program were published om the
New York State Education Department website. In 2018 (pending the appropriation of State funds during the 2018 session of the New York State Legislature), 80 awards up to $10,000 per year for two years will be granted to physicians who agree to practice Primary Care Medicine in an area of New York State designated by the Board of Regents as having a shortage of physicians. Award amount is based on undergraduate and medical school student loan amounts and loan interest expense.
The deadline to apply is July 2, 2018.

Research Training Grants for Physicians in Training and Medical Students
The AOA has identified
five research priorities it believes have the greatest potential to impact patient care and evidence-based medicine, and demonstrate the value of D.O.s and their approach to care they bring to the medical profession. These programs are designed as a mechanism for supporting the research training of the applicant and will enable the applicant to conduct a basic science, clinical, or health services research project that will make a significant contribution to osteopathic medicine.

Maimonides Medical Center Cuts Ribbon on New Comprehensive Spine Center
On Tuesday, February 27,2018, was cut the ribbon on
Maimonides Medical Center's brand new Comprehensive Spine Center which will provide patients with the highest level of medical and surgical expertise and boast technological advancements like neurodiagnostics, imaging, EMG, fluoroscopy, and nerve conduction studies.

NYITCOM Professors and Students Received the 2017 OFP Attending Paper of the Year Award
Sheldon Yao, D.O., Chair and Associate Professor and
Michael Terzella, D.O., Associate Professor, OMM Department, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine-Old Westbury Campus and 3 third year students from NYITCOM co-authored the study titled
Osteopathic Considerations in the Infections of the Respiratory Tract, which was published in the January/February 2017 Osteopathic Family Physician (OFP) Journal, and received the
2017 OFP Journal Attending Paper of the Year for the study.
