Music fans of the increasingly all-digital 21st Century take compact discs for granted. So much so that many of us haven't slid one into a player in years.

But if we cast our minds back, and not even all that far, we can remember a time when CDs were precious, and the medium itself was both impressive and controversial.

When CD's first came on the market in 1982, they seemed impossibly high-tech.

After all, they emerged from a process of development that required the combined R&D and industrial might of both Japan and Europe's biggest consumer-electronics giants, Sony and Philips.

When you're performing solo, there are times you may wish you had more than two hands. Sometimes a single guitar part just isn't enough to create a compelling accompaniment. There is a solution: Technology comes to the rescue in the form of a looper. An electronic device that records sounds, instantly plays them back, and allows you to layer them.

I had played on almost all the tracks for Gaucho (even though I was erased from some, and some tracks didn't survive), so I was a pretty healthy part of that recording. As to why they thought of me, who the hell really knows? Donald tends to like players who have a jazz sensibility but who also have a bluesiness or soulfulness about their playing.
GREAT GEAR
The Big Muff has long been one of the most ubiquitous fuzz boxes on pedalboards and in the gear market. Scores of iterations on the original circuit have been released over the decades, tweaked to suit a wide variety of different players and music styles. Some prefer the smooth "violin-like" sustain of the original Triangle models, or the wooly power of the Ram's Head, or the edgy attack of the op amp version. But here, we're sweet on pretty much every variety of Muff.
ARTIST AWARENESS

Throughout a career that has spanned 30-plus years, Trey Anastasio and his band Phish have touched upon a mind-boggling number of genres and blended them into a unique sound. Trey is probably best known for his exploratory flights over a one- or two-chord vamp, but what does he do when more than one scale or arpeggio is needed? Some might think that Trey's improvisational techniques are only relevant to jazz, but they would be wrong. Many rock tracks are prime examples of a soloist playing over changes, and there are plenty of these moments in Phish's music.
