Heroes of the Week

Jenna Van Leer

Congratulations to this week's Heroes Tim Bahadoor and Jenna Van Leer! We hope you enjoy your up-close parking spot.

A Note to Tim Bahadoor, Middle School Bible Teacher:
"Tim lives out the motto "tough minded and tender hearted" that the Bible team is teaching the kids. Bible teachers have a high calling, just as pastors do. They must live the life they preach about,  or their impact cannot be fully reached. Tim lives an authentic faith walk, and it's obvious if you spend any time with him. As a teacher, he engages with his students and challenges them to know what they believe and why they believe it. If you walk by his room, you'll see him passionately speaking God's Truth, and you'll see a roomful of Bible scholars fully engaged. During conference time, he's able to speak honestly and passionately about the work God is doing in the lives of the students. As a co-worker, he's the first to give a compliment or word of praise, all while deflecting any positive acknowledgement that comes his way. The students are blessed to have him in their lives. We are blessed as teachers to have him on staff."

A Note to Jenna Van Leer, 5th Grade Teacher:
"I am continually impressed by your talent and dedication to teaching. You are a natural and have done an amazing job with your students so far. Starting at a new school isn't easy, but you are a perfect fit for MCS. I truly admire your desire to continually grow as a teacher. You are always looking to improve, try new things and strive to make each day the best it can be for your students. I am so thankful to call you a friend and to work alongside you everyday."  (heart) Hannah G.

Parents Invited to Difference Maker Chapels January 22nd
with guest speaker Jennifer Friend

Save the Date for our upcoming Difference Maker Chapels, which will be exploring the topic of homelessness in Orange County.  We are delighted to welcome guest speaker, Jennifer Friend, from Project Hope Alliance.  In addition, we will be hosting "214 Sq Ft" in our auditorium.  We invite our families to enter the world the motel dwelling homeless families call home, and immerse yourselves for a few minutes in what those less fortunate experience daily.  It will be available in the auditorium for our families to explore together before school 1/23-1/26, and after school 1/22-1/26. All homeroom classes will be given the opportunity to experience 214 Sq Ft as well. Contact Ali Bray at [email protected] if you have questions.

4th Grade California Missions
This past Friday, the fourth grade classes spent the day building models of all 21 California missions.  The students have been researching about individual missions and how they impacted our state history. All students exhibited teamwork, cooperation, creativity and problem solving skills in this hands-on-learning experience.  A special thank you goes out to all the many parents and staff who came in to help!  Please take time to admire all their handwork on display in the hallway by KG and 4A.

3rd Grade Leaning About Algorithms
"I'm really proud of these 3rd graders. After learning the algorithms to solve the Rubik's Cube, Jordan designed a mosaic for homework last night. He and Phineas brought it to life today instead of going outside to play at recess."

Enjoy, Mrs. Wilson

Project Giving Light
MCS joyfully partners with Project Giving Light to provide Christmas gifts to local children in need!

Free Wheelchair Mission Highlight
Students who visited the MCS book fair this year were able to see a powerful example of the execution of innovation and the design thinking process - we had a designated space for Free Wheelchair Mission's first prototype of the wheelchair that was engineered by their founder for individuals in developing countries who did not have access to wheelchairs, and who needed a wheelchair that could navigate rocky terrain.

We had the book, "Wings for a Flower" on display and available for students to purchase via suggested donation of $10. This book was written about a child who received the gift of mobility from Free Wheelchair Mission.

Our students generously donated $128.71, which provides funding for a little over one and a half wheelchairs (the cost to donate one wheelchair is $80). That's almost two families who will be getting their mobility back this Christmas! A couple students even purchased this book for their teachers so that the book could live in their classroom library and be shared by all of the students.

Middle School Chapel

The middle school students were greeted by a full worship band of 10 of their peers, who led us into worship Monday morning.

We were excited to welcome back MCS alumni Jessica Hanson as our guest speaker. Jessica shared her heart with our students as someone who has walked through the same hallways, experienced the same middle school life, and sat in the same chapel chairs.  Jessica encouraged the students to be brave as hard situations come their way, and not to cling so tightly to their own plans.

We are grateful to Jessica for answering the call to  come back to Mariners 6 years after graduating, and speak from her life experience to our students.

6th-8th Grade Band & Orchestra Christmas Program
Thank you to our 6th-8th grade students under the direction of Dr. Um, Mrs. Boler, and Mr. Lucas for providing another awesome concert honoring the Birth of Jesus.

Middle School Band Visits Seniors
Last Friday, Middle School Band kids had the opportunity to bless the senior residents at the Crown Cove Senior Living Facility, performing fun Christmas Carols. The Middle School also got to distribute Christmas Cards that were created by elementary students during chapel last week. Enjoy these photos.

Middle School Christmas Skate Party
A special thank you to everyone who made it to our Christmas Skate Party!  It was a wonderful evening full of fun, laughter, and joy!  Over 100 students showed up to celebrate Christmas together, and we definitely made the most of our 2 hours at the skating rink.  And a big thank you goes out to the teachers and staff who chaperoned the event and even laced up some skates to join the party!

HSPT Private School Entrance Exam Review Sessions
We are offering four review sessions to help our MCS students prepare for private school entrance exams, specifically the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE).   Math and English will be reviewed in each session.  All four sessions will be different, so we recommend you attend all four. Students are encouraged to purchase the HSPT or ISEE test books available at Barnes and Nobel or online.  Any version of the HSPT or ISEE test book is fine. This book is recommended, not required.

Students may attend any or all of the following sessions:
  • Wednesday, December 6th (3:00-4:30pm)
  • Wednesday, December 13th (3:00-4:30pm)
  • Wednesday, December 20th (3:00-4:30pm)
  • Wednesday, January 10th (3:00-4:30pm)

Location: Meet in Mrs. Thurston's room at the start of each session

The sessions are long, but are designed to allow review of both Math and English. We will also provide a short snack break. These sessions should provide a good stretching of our students' "test endurance." Generally, entrance exam testing periods are three to fours hours in length. Most middle school students are not used to sitting and testing for so long!

All four sessions are included in the $40 fee. Your FACTS account will be billed after the first session you attend.

Please RSVP to [email protected] if your child will be attending any sessions.

***Please let us know if you'd like to donate snack items for these review sessions. It would be much appreciated by the hungry students.
