Happy Holidays and Thanks for an Incredible 2017!

As we head into the winter break, we want to send best wishes  for a safe and happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year to all teachers, staff and students in Sarasota County Schools, as well as to all EdExploreSRQ providers, teaching artists and community partners.

Through your help and support, we reached new heights for EdExploreSRQ in 2017. But the best is still to come. With new Explorations, initiatives and providers being added all of the time, the future is full of exciting active learning opportunities and life-changing experiences for students in Sarasota County Schools.

Thank you for all that you do to make EdExploreSRQ a success for our schools and our students!
The Patterson Foundation, Community Foundation Commit Additional $1 Million to EdExploreSRQ

Since its founding in 2011, EdExploreSRQ has benefitted from the involvement of many community partners, but few have played more important roles than The Patterson Foundation and Community Foundation of Sarasota County

Through their commitment of financial resources and other forms of support, we have been able to steadily grow EdExploreSRQ and expand our programs and offerings for students throughout Sarasota County Schools.

Earlier this month, these two incredible foundations stepped forward once again and announced that they will extend their support of EdExploreSRQ by an additional $1 million over the next five years. It is a gift that will benefit thousands of K-12 students in our area, especially those from low-income families.

On behalf of all teachers, students and schools in the district, we want to thank The Patterson Foundation and Community Foundation of Sarasota County for their continued and generous support of EdExploreSRQ.

Jazzlinks Exploration Brings Civil Rights Movement to Life

Jazzlinks, a collaboration between the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) and The Jazz Club of Sarasota, is back this spring with a great new Exploration on the American Civil Rights' movement. Featuring standards-based teaching materials, classroom sessions, and a culminating final performance with a talented cast from WBTT, this Exploration provides middle and high school students with a window on history illuminating the struggles of African Americans in their fight for freedom, equality and social justice.

Teaching Artist Spotlight: Mary Kelly Presents Harriet Tubman

From slave to freedom fighter to savior for hundreds of African Americans via the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman's tale is one of perseverance, inspiration and hope. Teaching artist Mary J. Kelly brings Tubman's heroic story to life through two Explorations designed for students in grades 4-8. As with our Jazzlinks Exploration described above, this is a great Exploration for teachers seeking learning activities for African American History Month this February!

Need Money? Community Foundation Grants Available

Looking to fund an Exploration this spring? The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has grants available, and the processing time between submitting your application and receiving notification about awards is typically just 2-3 weeks.

Community Foundation Exploration Grants are rolling grants, which means there are no application deadlines. However, schools are limited to $5,000 in grant money per semester, and the money must be used toward Explorations currently posted on the  EdExploreSRQ website . The great thing is that even if your school already exhausted its $5,000 in grant funding during the fall, you can apply again for $5,000 more this spring!
