I’d like to share a poem that I came across the other day….I do not know the author…
Choose to be happy,
Choose to feel great,
Choose not to let things make you irate.
I know that some people are not feeling great,
And some people just like to hate.
But I wish that all people could be healthy and strong,
And, I wish that all people could just get along.
If wands could be waved, and the world could be cured,
I’d wave that big wand, of that you can be assured.
But I’ll do what I can ...every day I am here,
And try to remember ‘the good,’ year to year.
And I choose to be happy,
And I choose to feel great,
And I choose not to let things make me irate!!

Judaics in First and Second Grade

During the past few weeks, first and second graders were energetically preparing for Chanukah. They learned about the many traditions and
mitzvot
of the holiday and the entire story of Chanukah: what happened in the
Beit HaMikdash
(Holy Temple) and in the land of Israel when the Greeks came.
Students not only read the story in class, but they also enjoyed acting out the scenes in Hebrew, including writing their own scripts and making costumes. In addition, students had fun learning many Chanukah songs. As a final celebration of learning, we decided to share our play and songs at the Celebration of Light and Learning.
As you know, a big part of Chanukah is playing dreidel, getting presents and eating chocolate gelt. Students were treated to a yummy activity of making dreidels out of marshmallows and pretzels, and writing the Hebrew letters with gel icing! They also made
chanukiyot
out of different pasta shapes, and then painted them with metallic paints. Please stop by to enjoy the students' work on the bulletin board outside of our classroom.

Read-a-Thon Success!

Once again, I wanted to thank you and your families for your
incredible
support of The Silver Academy's First Annual Read-a-Thon!
Recently, as I counted the amount of minutes students had read over the last two weeks, and totaled their pledge donations, I was completely astounded to realize that because of their hard work and dedication, the results of the Read-a-thon had exceeded my wildest expectations.
Our school goal was to have as many students as possible participate in this fundraising effort, and to raise at least $100 to purchase books for children at Penn State Children's Hospital. At my most recent count,
our
students had read for over 4,300 minutes
and raised (drum roll, please)
$1,555!
I was so excited to share with students that because of their hard work, we will be able to send additional baskets of books to the children at Penn State.
To celebrate their success, students celebrated with a cookie party this week! Moreover, gift cards to Barnes and Noble will be awarded to three students from the youngest, middle, and oldest grades who logged the most reading minutes during the Read-a-thon: Emily Fleming (Kindergarten) logged 430 minutes, Abie Schertz (4th grade) logged 1,037 minutes, and Isaac First (8th grade) logged 1,804 minutes! Congratulations to all of our readers!
Please make sure to tell your children how proud you are of them and this incredible accomplishment. And of course, make sure to keep reading!
