October is National Arts and Humanities Month, celebrate with the Division of Arts and Humanities.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The new academic year always begins with a celebration: October is National Arts and Humanities Month, and it is fitting for our entire community to come together to honor artists, historians, writers, philosophers and professors.

It is indeed an exciting time at UC San Diego and the Division of Arts and Humanities. With a campus that is expanding both physically and intellectually   ---    our humanities faculty are planning now for the move to the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood   ---    we are deeply honored to be invited to join the American Council of Learned Societies leadership consortium in the humanities. Based on research and engagement, new academic growth and a strong future, the invitation is a great opportunity for us and the university as a whole.

I have been delighted to travel with Chancellor Khosla, hosting regional celebrations across the country for the Campaign for UC San Diego. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, New York City: The energy and momentum for arts and the humanities are palpable everywhere, as we engage meaningfully with our alumni, parents and friends.

Our division is also distinctive for its commitment to the student experience. As this year's Without Walls Festival shows, our students have direct access to faculty and the greater community, profiting from a vision based on learning by doing. And to help celebrate Arts and Humanities Month, we are hosting an undergraduate student contest around our mission: an education for the common good.

We are especially committed to social equity, diversity and inclusion across cultures and disciplines because we know active inclusivity from our entire community gives us strength. We continue to promote the foundational, transferable and enduring values of the humanities and the arts in a comprehensive university, and look forward to celebrating with you the entire academic year.

Regards,

Dean Cristina Della Coletta
UC San Diego Division of Arts and Humanities

Based on an innovative approach to humanities research and engagement shown through multiple years of successful fellowships, recent academic growth and future trajectory, the American Council of Learned Societies invites UC San Diego to their prestigious humanities Research University Consortium.

All of the professors who join us enhance UC San Diego's signature strength: a commitment to cross-disciplinary investigation and visible social impact. Meet the new faculty members of the division, including Benjamin Cowan in the Department of History and Lily Hoang in the Department of Literature.

Craig Callender of the Department of Philosophy and John Evans of the Department of Sociology will be the inaugural co-directors of the Institute for Practical Ethics. The mission of the institute is to develop and promote cross-disciplinary research on ethical issues facing the public, with special emphasis on fostering deliberation.

This year's La Jolla Playhouse Without Walls Festival once again has a strong showing of Arts and Humanities students and alumni from the departments of Theatre & Dance and Music, including a special collaboration between MFA students Lily Padilla and Dylan Key.

With an opening reception held Oct. 12, the Department of Visual Arts continued their anniversary series Visual Arts @ 50 by presenting "Provoking Change: A Visual Arts Alumni Exhibition." The special exhibit features alumni work from the 1970s to the 1990s, and runs through Dec. 7 at the campus University Art Gallery.

In this Nov. 6 Institute of Arts and Humanities Challenging Conversations Series event, guest Rachel Buff will explore the immigrant-rights movement from the Cold War to today.

C-SPAN visited the classroom of Luis Alvarez of the Department of History, broadcasting his lecture "Zoot Suits and Race Relations During WWII" as part of their American History series.
