GW Cardiology Faculty Lead Fourth Annual Heart Failure Symposium
Drs. Marco Mercader and Gurusher Panjrath led the Institute's Fourth Annual Heart Failure and Arrhythmia Conference on December 9th at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, DC. The symposium educates cardiovascular teams, as well as internists, with the newest advances and up-to-date clinical practice approaches for treatment of heart failure, arrhythmias, and structural ischemic and vascular issues. GW Cardiology Faculty - Drs. Katz, Borden, A. Choi, B. Choi, Lewis, Martin, Mazhari, Nagy, Najam, Reiner, Solomon, and Tracy - presented on best practices in cardiovascular care.

Bloedorn Multidisciplinary Lecture Series Featuring Dr. David Calhoun
Dr. Richard Katz, director of GW Division of Cardiology, and Dr. Dominic Raj, director of GW Division of Kidney Disease and Hypertension, invited Dr. David Calhoun, professor of medicine and medical director of the Vascular Biology & Hypertension Program at the University of Alabama as our first Cardiology-Renal Visiting Professor for the GW Heart & Vascular Institute's Bloedorn Cardiology Multidisciplinary Lecture Series. Supported by the Walter A. Bloedorn Foundation, this educational series creates a forum to better integrate colleagues across GW by engaging faculty and trainees from multiple medical specialties. Dr. Calhoun presented "Resistant Hypertension" and discussed current approaches to treatment. Faculty, trainees, and medical students were welcomed from both specialties.

Dr. Andrew Choi Trains to be Master Educator in American College of Cardiology's Emerging Faculty Program
Dr. Andrew Choi, MD, FACC, and Co-Director of Cardiac CT/MRI, was selected to participate alongside other highly respected young physician-educators from around the country in the American College of Cardiology's (ACC) Emerging Faculty Program. ACC Emerging Faculty graduates are trained on how to become "Master Educators" and invited to enhance future ACC national and regional initiatives in cardiovascular education.

Dr. Farmer Published in JAMA for Health Care Policy Reform
Dr. Steve Farmer is an associate professor of medicine and health policy at George Washington University and a senior advisor at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Dr. Farmer's paper on "
Payment Reform to Enhance Collaboration of Primary Care and Cardiology
," was published online in the JAMA Cardiology journal this past month. The study analyzes the need to reform the current fee-for-service payment model in health care systems to incentivize physician collaboration in managing chronic diseases. Dr. Farmer stressed the need for increased communication between primary care physicians and cardiologists to provide cost-effective and high-quality comanagement of chronic cardiovascular diseases.
