Collier County Sheriff's Honor Guard

Hello Friends,

As I reflect on this past year, I find myself grateful by my surroundings - my family, our students, faculty, alumni, staff, benefactors and dear friends in our community who tirelessly work to keep Ave Law the special place that it is today.

On December 7, the day we reflect and remember the attack on Pearl Harbor, we hosted our Second Annual Veterans Memorial Remembrance Day. Our campus was filled with members of our community veterans and their families and friends.

I'm proud to be a part of this law school as we consistently come together in unity, finding ways to honor our military veterans and striving to be the best law school for our nation's heroes.

I'm also proud of our students who made it through another very successful exam period, some of whom have now officially graduated.

Merry Christmas to you and your families. I look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Kevin Cieply

On December 7, 2017, Ave Maria School of Law hosted its Second Annual Veterans Memorial Celebration in honor of our nation's veterans. For the first time, we presented the Annual St. Martin of Tours, Patron Saint of Veterans and Soldiers, Hero's Award to three deserving individuals: Major General J. T. (Mike) Coyne, United States Marine Corps (Retired) who served as the Master of Ceremonies and Lieutenant General Richard F. Natonski, United States Marine Corps (Retired) who was our Guest Speaker and newest member of the Ave Law Board of Governors.

The third hero award recipient was long time veteran, Mr. John Gideon, who is 97 years old. Mr. Gideon served in the Navy in WWII. He was at Pearl Harbor on the day of the attack, December 7, 1941. He eventually received a medical discharge from the Navy.

Back by popular demand were the Ladies for Liberty Singing Troupe, dedicated to singing the Andrews sisters style of music, and we were grateful to have the Collier County Sheriff's Honor Guard with us.

It was special having so many local veterans organizations join us from Lee and Collier County, including the Wounded Warriors of Collier County, the Collier County Veterans Council, the Collier County Veteran Service Organization, the Military Officers Association of SWFL, the Jewish War Veterans Post 202, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Support Our Troops.

Thank you to our External Affairs team for hosting this event and to everyone involved in bringing this event together.

Veterans Wall of Honor and Veteran Legacies at Ave Law

As many of you know, Ave Law created a Veterans Wall of Honor, located immediately inside our law library's front doors. Benefactors, faculty, staff, students, and members of the community may purchase plaques to place on the wall with the name of a veteran. It's a great gift and for those interested, you may contact 239-687-5405 or  visit our website: http://veterans-project.avemarialaw.edu/honor-a-veteran/.

Veteran Legacies at Ave Law  is a video tribute project that officially launched on December 7, 2017 during our Second Annual Veterans Memorial Celebration on campus. Veterans Legacies is meant to capture the essence of our fellow veterans and honor each of their experiences served in our country's military service. Interviews range from student veterans, alumni veterans, staff and faculty veterans, Board of Governors veterans, friends and family of veterans and veterans right here in our Ave Law Community.  To learn more about the project, please contact Kristy Kryszczak, Director of Marketing and Communications/Editorial Director, at 239-687-5404 or  [email protected] .

In the Spotlight: Giving Back
Our Student Bar Association organized a very successful toy drive during their Christmas party this year. Ave Law's student organizations staged a friendly competition with one another to see who could raise the most toys. Congratulations is in order for our Military Law Society for their win. Most importantly, our community raised over 250 Toys for Tots! Congratulations to everyone involved in supporting such a great cause.

Our faculty and staff
participated in a very meaningful giving project this holiday season, donating to our military friends overseas. We sent boxes to Afghanistan and Kuwait to our Marines, Army and Airmen.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Cindy Mariconda, APS, Accounting Manager for leading the charge and handling all of the logistics of this project from start to finish. Having a son in the military, this is something very close to Cindy's heart.
