President puts members first
Federation President Guy Laforest lays out his commitments to member engagement over the next 18 months, in a blog entitled Members come first. His number one priority is building a closer, more collaborative relationship with members, and he identifies the areas where the Federation community can expect to see changes. 
Congress registration opens soon! 
Registration for Congress 2018 , hosted by the University of Regina, will open mid-January. In the interim, find out if your association is attending, discover the newly released Big Thinking  lineup and start planning your trip to Regina now!  
Congress travel awards
To help graduate students attend Congress 2018, the University of Regina is providing 600 student awards totaling $270,000. The funding includes a subsidy for on-campus accommodations, a meal card for on-campus meals, and a credit to the campus bookstore - all to help make it easier for students to experience Canada's largest gathering of scholars. Call for papers for the 2018 Congress
A majority of deadlines for call for papers are still upcoming. The Federation has prepared a list of associations with deadlines still open. Once the proposal is approved, the speakers are asked to register for the Congress. Registration begins in mid-January on the 2018 Congress website. The complete list here
Social media for associations
The Federation's recent webinar for members, 
" Effective use of social media for associations ," discussed lessons for effectively developing scholarly associations' digital presence. This webinar featured Federation member, Michel Duquet, Executive Directorof the Canadian Historical Association and Nicola Katz, Manager of Communications at the Federation. Have your say on Budget 2018 
Here's a chance to tell government about the value of research. The federal government has launched a new survey to gather input from Canadians that will inform the 2018 Budget. This is a great chance to express your thoughts on a range of issues, including funding for research. You can share your ideas at #YourBudget2018 here

On November 25, Blair Stonechild, Professor of Indigenous Studies at First Nations University of Canada, spoke about "The importance of Indigenous knowledge and spirituality for the future of academia" at the Royal Society of Canada's 2017 Celebration of Excellence in Winnipeg. Big Thinking on the Hill - Nov 21
On November 21, Katherine Graham, School of Public Policy and Administration, Carleton University and David Newhouse, Chanie Wenjack School of Indigenous Studies, Trent University, gave their Big Thinking   on the Hill lecture "The promise of reconciliation: Will this time be different?" before a large audience in the Parliamentary restaurant. Every month, the blog Bookmark it! looks at landmark works that deal with culture, society and research in Canada. In her book entitled Refus global: histoire d'une réception partielle, Sophie Dubois looks at the critical reception of Refus global to show how the myth that surrounds the text was created.

U of R receives an Eagle Staff
The University of Regina has been recognized for the support it offers to Indigenous students. An Eagle Staff - a sacred symbol traditionally presented to a warrior or leader for their service to the community - was presented by Elder Roy Bison and his son, U of R student Teddy Bison, to President and Vice-Chancellor Vianne Timmons. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council has released a summary report   Advancing knowledge on how emerging technologies can be leveraged to benefit Canadians . The new report showcases insights on Emerging Technologies and includes key findings from the related  Knowledge Synthesis Grants .
Imagine a Canada
Imagine a Canada , a national arts and leadership program of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) is inviting young people, kindergarten to post-secondary, to share their thoughts on what the future of Canada will look like through the lens of Reconciliation. More information on getting involved and submitting your entries are available here .
CIFAR call for ideas
The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research is calling for proposals for sustained research projects that address "complex, fundamental questions of importance to the world." Ambitious project ideas from all research disciplines are welcome. The call for letters of intent opened on November 15 and closes on January 21, 2018. Read the full details here
