Article and video by: FCUSD Communication Intern Rida Anjum
Over 200 FCUSD families in need received the Holiday Gift of Rancho Cordova's very own "Christmas Mall" in partnership with the community and hosted by River City Christian.

Thanks to the generosity of the church, families received services such as a $50 shopping voucher, gift wrapping, a dinner and show from America's Got Talent's Dave the Horn Guy, and a full service salon and spa. Volunteers at the event included Cordova High's Interact Club and the students in the Culinary Academy who prepared food and served the guests.

Folsom Cordova's Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education, Curtis Wilson, thanked the community for its generosity during remarks at the event: "For the last 3 years, the Folsom Cordova community has been the recipient of this outpouring of caring and kindness."

The event was filled with activities for the children and adults alike, and the services and 700+ volunteers created an atmosphere of holiday cheer.

City of Rancho Cordova awards $146k in grants toward student success
As part of its continued support of educational enrichment, resources, and programs for our students the Rancho Cordova City Council on Dec. 4  awarded nearly $146,000  in grants to benefit District students, including:

  • After-school programs: The Council awarded $50,000 to help expand the District's After School Education and Safety (ASES) program at additional Rancho Cordova schools. The ASES Program allows schools to provide academic assistance, academic enrichment, and physical recreation for students.
  • Student athletes: The Council awarded $95,800 in a multi-year Cordova High School football enhancement project. The second year of the agreement focuses on the continuation of a year-round lifestyle-focused strength and conditioning program, as well as replacement parts and uniforms, personal protective wear, field equipment, and team pre-game meals.
These projects and many more are funded from the city's Community Enhancement Fund, also known as Measure H, a ½ cent local sales tax measure that was approved by Rancho Cordova citizens in 2014.
Where are they now? Alum featured on Food Network contest
Article by: FCUSD Communication Intern Jordan Young
A Folsom Cordova alum got the attention of the Food Network with her baking and cake decorating abilities.

Jewel Burgess is a Rancho Cordova native, attended Cordova High School her freshman year and graduated from Walnutwood High in 1990. Burgess was featured on The Food Network's Halloween Special, "Hayride of Horror". This three-day long series consisted of challenges in which Burgess and her team of five skilled bakers created various Halloween themed foods in competition with another team of five. Burgess's team won two of the three days.

The opportunity to compete on the show seemed to arise out of nowhere for Burgess. After creating a cake for her son's birthday, Burgess began posting her creations on social media. After following Burgess on Instagram for some time, The Food Network contacted Burgess and invited her onto the show. Burgess said she was surprised but very thankful for the opportunity given to her and that it was an experience she'll never forget.

Since being on the show, Burgess made baking her professional career. She now owns a local custom cakes business, where she creates and designs all cakes on her own.

"I love it, being able to make cakes that make people smile, that's why I do it," she said.

Burgess hopes to be able to pass on her knowledge to aspiring bakers in the future as well. She has already taught one class at the local community center and hopes to teach more.

SacRT Board votes to reduce K-12 monthly bus pass fare

The SacRT Board of Directors voted on Dec. 11 to reduce the price of the student monthly bus pass from $55 to $20, a 65% decrease in cost.

The fare reduction is part of a six-month pilot program to increase Sac RT's ridership, which is good news for our K-12 students who rely on public transportation. It's part of an Sac RT's Ridership Building Initiative.

"It's our hope that students in grades K-12 will adopt this mode of travel as they becoming adults, so providing them affordable transit access youth seems to be an excellent approach," said SacRT Board Chair Andy Morin.

The $20 student monthly pass and $10 semi-monthly student pass will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018, and will remain in effect until June 30, 2018. Advance sales of the January monthly pass will begin on Dec. 20, at the reduced price.
