Welcome to our monthly newsletter, where we bring you human interest stories, current events and information on Belize! Mostly, our purpose is to share all the positive and beautiful things about Belize and its people.

The Consulate of Belize in Florida continues to offer Belizean Passports and Emergency Travel Documents. We are also issuing Identification Cards, facilitating many Belizeans living in Florida with the opportunity to hold an official ID from Belize. Acceptance of these cards at U.S. offices and other institutions, however, depends on their discretion.

 University of Belize Launches MBA Program


On Thursday December 7th, the University of Belize launched its first Master's Degree Program for the Masters of Business Administration(MBA). Minister Tracy Taegar-Panton delivered the Keynote address to the guests of students, professors, media and entrepreneurs in which she applauded the efforts of the University of Belize and the Ministry of Education for their passion towards human and sustainable national development. Minister Panton also commented on the importance of these programs in setting Belize's bar to the highest level so that Belize is not only able to compete with, but also "survive the demands of a globalized world."

SPECIAL ENVOY LAUNCHES 2018 INSPIRATION CENTER CALENDAR AND AGENDA

 
 
 
 
On December 8th, a Friday, the Office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children (SEWC), in collaboration with McNab Visual Strategies, launched the 2018 Inspiration Calendar and Agendas. The Inspiration Calendar showcases the artistic works of 12 young artists whose handiwork convey a sense of hope in their bright futures. According to the Office of the SEWC, the event was a success. They were also able to raise $21,000 that will benefit the children of the Inspiration Center. 
 


 
Small Scale Farming in Schools

Educating and empowering our children towards a healthy lifestyle through agriculture

 
 
 Back in October of this year, we reported that the Taiwan Embassy in Belize donated $5000 to the Small Scale Farming in Schools Project, headed by the Belmopan Police Department. Well, that project is underway and Belize Now visited a couple of the participating schools. According to the Belmopan Police Department, it is expected that around twelve hundred students will be impacted by the project.

Recipe of the Month
Belizean Black Fruit Cake 
Christmas Tradition
 
  
INGREDIENTS:  
 
1 lb. butter
2 lbs. brown sugar
1 pt. stout
½ pt. caramel coloring
1 qt. rum
1 lb. raisins
1 lb. prunes
1 lb. currants
1 lb. citron
1 lb. dates
1 lb. cherries
1 lb. mixed peel
1 lb. pecans
8 eggs
2 lbs. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. nutmeg 
1 lb. brown sugar for stewing fruit
  
PREPARATION:
  
Cream butter with sugar; add eggs one at a time. Add flour, baking powder and spices alternately with stout and coloring. Finally, add fruit that has been stewed well with rum and sugar. Line cake pans with brown paper. Fill about ¾ full. Bake in very slow oven (275 degrees) for about 3 hours.
As flavoring improves with storage, it is recommended to sprinkle a little rum before and after storing.
