December 2017
APSA Member Newsletter
The American Political Science Association, a membership association of over 12,000 political scientists, expresses deep concern regarding reports that officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) received guidance banning several terms, including "evidence-based," "science-based," and "diversity," from use in budget proposals for fiscal year 2019. Although the nature and source of the guidance is in dispute, any request that federal scientists and policymakers alter their research and/or budget request in a way that obstructs the free exchange of ideas and chills scientific inquiry inside and outside government is unacceptable.

The CDC's own scientific integrity policy notes that the "CDC has a responsibility to conduct the best science and is committed to disseminating scientific findings and results without being influenced by policy or political issues." We urge the Office of Management and Budget, the Department of Health and Human Services, and other federal agencies to reiterate their commitment to scientific freedom, evidence-based policymaking, and freedom of expression.
Tuition Waivers Tax Rejected, Student Loan Interest Deduction Preserved in Final Tax Bill
On December 20, the Senate and House of Representatives approved the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act ( H.R. 1). The final legislation does not include the House  bill's provisions that would have treated tuition waivers as taxable income and would have removed the student loan interest deduction. APSA  strongly opposed the House provisions.

Each year, the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) and the National Humanities Alliance (NHA) host meetings and advocacy days in Washington, DC. These events address conditions for federal funding in the social sciences and humanities, provide advocacy training, and feature meetings with congressional staffers on Capitol Hill. COSSA and NHA's annual meetings and advocacy days are opportunities for APSA members to learn how to effectively advocate for the discipline at home and in the nation's capital, and to educate congressional representatives and staff about the need for robust federal funding for political science research.  NHA's meeting and advocacy day will take place March 11-13, and COSSA's will take place April 30-May 1. APSA is offering grants to defray the cost of registration and travel to these events. Learn more and apply through this form by January 20, 2018.

Responses to these questions will not be made available to journal editors or reviewers and cannot affect the consideration of submissions in any way. Furthermore, responses will only be made available in aggregate summary form by APSA staff.
2018 APSA Council Nominations
The APSA Nominating Committee welcomes your suggestions for 2018 nominees for president-elect, vice president, and council member. Council members serve staggered three-year terms, and the president-elect and vice presidents serve one-year terms. The nominating committee encourages all members of APSA to suggest fellow members for consideration. Those wishing to do so should explain why they believe the person's accomplishments, background, and views would make them a good choice for a leadership position. The nominating committee hopes to nominate a slate of accomplished scholars and practitioners who reflect the diverse membership of APSA. To achieve this goal, they rely on the membership to forward suggestions and recommendations.

Please send suggestions to  [email protected] by February 1, 2018. The committee will meet in February 2018 to begin compiling a slate of candidates. The completed slate of nominees will be announced in March, and will be put to a member vote via electronic ballot over the summer. Find more information on APSA nominations and elections here.
