EVAWI Launches Redesigned Start by Believing Website
This month,
End Violence Against Women International (EVAWI) launched their redesigned, multi-media
Start by Believing website. The new homepage allows visitors to choose their path and enter Start by Believing or Seek Then Speak, an avenue for survivors to learn about and access immediate services, reporting options, and resources.
Start by Believing is a global campaign started by EVAWI to change the way we respond to sexual assault. Most victims never report their assault to law enforcement for fear of being re-traumatized by the process and reactions from friends and family. According to EVAWI, "knowing how to respond is critical, because a negative response can worsen the trauma and foster an environment where perpetrators face no consequences for their crimes."
The
Start by Believing site contains information and resources to launch your own campaign, including graphics, brochures, posters, and presentations. Colleges and universities can start a movement by implementing actions outlined in the
Campus Action Kit and encouraging campus community members to
take the pledge. Additional
action kits are available for law enforcement, prosecutors, communities, and more.
Seek Then Speak is a resource center for victims of sexual assault. The site is designed to help someone who has been sexually assaulted make sense of what has happened to them, explore the options they have, and help determine what actions they might want to take. This is all available via desktop computer, mobile, or even landline phone. In addition, friends and family members of sexual assault victims can find information about how to support a survivor.

Critical Incident Review Report
Last year, the Pulse nightclub shooting attack claimed the lives of 49 individuals and injured 58 more. The Orlando Police Department (OPD) performed their duties with courage and professionalism, averting a potentially greater loss of life.
Following the incident, OPD recognized there were many important lessons learned and asked the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) to conduct a critical incident review of the attack. Released this week, the COPS Office and Police Foundation report on the incident review,
RESCUE, RESPONSE, AND RESILIENCE: A critical incident review of the Orlando public safety response to the attack on the Pulse nightclub (PDF), details multiple aspects of the attack and response, including leadership, collaboration, tactics, equipment, training, emergency medical care, officer safety, public information, and community relationships. It identifies best practices for planning, training, and procedures in all areas of response to a similar attack or mass casualty event and can serve as a valuable guide to law enforcement or first responders, including those on campuses, seeking to prepare for similar incidents.
