A Note from Mrs. Ryan    12/20/17

Dear Parents,

The theme for the third week of Advent is  Joy which is represented by the pink candle of the Advent wreath. Christian theologians describe joy as "an act of resistance against despair and its forces."  This seems to resonate with the circumstances many of us are currently experiencing. The people who have added Christmas lights to fire devastated neighborhoods are resisting the forces of despair. The countless acts of kindness we have seen since the fire are another form of resistance.  As Christians celebrate joy during this third week of Advent, may we all be reminded of the power of joy to make the world a better place.

If your children came home and reported that it snowed at our parish campus today, they did not imagine it. Some of the people who work at the Sonoma County Fair surprised them during lunchtime with flurries of man-made "snow". I am sure that the parishioners attending the 12:10 Mass heard their joyous shrieks of delight as did many of the neighbors. Resisting the forces of despair with man-made snow!

I must confess that we threw together the Christmas program at the last minute this year. It's been many years since we have held the program in our parish church, and we haven't had much practice time, but St. Rose kids always rise to the occasion. With the leadership provided by our 7th and 8th graders, I am certain you will enjoy the program. And if you haven't already gotten there, it will lead you into a wonderful Christmas spirit. This year we are unable to do a second performance on Friday for the students. But Santa will be visiting and there will be great joy at 12:30 PM on Friday as we depart for a well deserved vacation.

Even though it is cold outside now, I want you to keep in mind all of the heat waves to come. Wouldn't air conditioned classrooms be nice? Raffle tickets for the Crab Feed went home today. Please assist your children with sales. Remember that proceeds go toward the $60,000 we need to get the matching grant from a generous benefactor. If we can reach that goal, the new HVAC system will be installed this summer!

On behalf of Fr. Denis and all of the St. Rose  faculty and staff, I wish you and your entire family a peaceful and joyous Christmas season.

Sincerely,
Kathy Ryan
School Principal
