WSA-OC The Whistle
December  2017
Chatting With The Commodore
Risa Scott
 WSA-OC Commodore
Ahhh, the holiday season is upon us once again! Sometimes, I think we could just fast forward after Halloween straight to the first of the year, but then I would hate to miss all the festive frenzy, chaos, friends and family and celebrating of the end of twelve long months and the incoming newness of the next twelve!

As we close out 2017 and my term as Commodore for WSA-OC, I cannot pull the curtain on this year without feeling extreme gratitude - for the 'village' that rallied to put together the events and meetings with nary a hitch for all of us, as well as for the relationships that have fostered and grown over these past months. I am excited for 2018 and all the new friends and activities that will greet us, along with our new Commodore, Melanie Green, to lead us. It's going to be another epic year for WSA-OC, so hang on! Come learn and play, on land and sea, with your sailing sisters and brothers!

My wish for all of you is to celebrate YOU and all that makes you wonderfully UNIQUE and fabulous!  Be a true friend to others and your circle of friends will flourish. Be KIND and COMPASSIONATE and PASSIONATE about things that hold special meaning to you! Remember who and what are IMPORTANT to you and CELEBRATE them! Stay HEALTHY in mind, body and spirit and LET GO of all things negative. Fill your life with POSITIVE friends, thoughts and actions. DO all this and you will find WEALTH beyond your means!

Thank you to all who have supported me this past year and have made it a very memorable time for me! Blessings to you all in 2018 and beyond!

Cheers to the New Year & New Board
Join Us As We Install the 2018 Board of Directors and Plan for the Year

Please join us on Tuesday, January 9th as we start the year off with a fun ice breaker/get to know you activity. This will be an easy way to get back into the swing of "real life" after the hustle and bustle of the Holidays. The ice breaker will kickoff the meeting at 7:00 p.m.

The meeting will consist of an information gathering icebreaker activity, announcements, old and new business,  the  outline for the meetings and events for the year. We will then  have an installation of the officers who will be serving on our Board of Directors. After this brief  formality, we will have a champagne toast and dessert for all.

We are requesting that everyone wear a blue blazer. If you don't have the requested attire, no worries! We're not a 'nose in the air' kinda club ;) Also, do not feel obligated to purchase said blue blazer, wear a dark jacket, sweater or whatever makes you comfortable. We would just like for you to attend.

Meetings are open to all members, their guests and any member of the public interested in learning more about the WSA-OC. Guests may attend up to two meetings as non-members to learn about our group.

WSA-OC: We're Fun, Accomplished & Charitable
Our 2017 Holiday Party was a huge success!
This group knows how to have a good time and raise money.

After some socializing -  read: drinks were consumed - everyone participated in a fun, get to know you better, activity, in which everyone was divided into 12 "crews." Each crew had to name their boat then answer several questions about their collective sailing experience. As a group, we have a combined 955 years of sailing experience, have owned (past and present) 141 boats, have seven USCG licensed captains, have sailed all over the US and the world, 14 of us were involved in an actual man overboard situation and four of us have never sailed overnight or spent the night on a boat. We have some pretty accomplished members, with exciting stories to tell, and this is only a portion of our membership. However, let's rectify the not ever having sailed overnight or slept on a boat for those four members, should they choose to do so!

The nautical votive candle holder party favor, decorated by Risa Scott
Over 60 members and their guests were treated to the island sounds of Panjive and an island inspired sit-down dinner. Everyone was gifted a nautical themed votive holder with an LED candle, courtesy of the WSA-OC Board of Directors.

Thank you to Brenda Highley and Risa Scott for organizing the party and to  the Dana West Yacht Club for their stellar service and use of venue for the evening. Check out the photos Regina Stewart took during the party. Thank you for donating your time and talent to capture our festivities! We hope to have the photos posted on our website and Facebook in the near future.  And let's not forget all of YOU, who donated to Sailors Helping, either through the silent auction, charity sail or with a cash donation. Thanks to your generosity we will be sending them a check for approximately $2500.

Daysail Fundraiser
Sailing For Hurricane Relief

Who says charity "work" can't be fun? This is how WSA-OC raises funds ... a daysail aboard the luxe and beautiful Cabernet Sky, a Beneteau Oceanis 48. As friends new and old, sailed around Dana Point, having fun and drinking champagne, $525 was raised for the non-profit  Sailors Helping  (our chosen 2018 Holiday charity recipient).

The only thing missing from this perfect sailing day,  was seeing some whales. Other than that, the day was PERFECT! Gorgeous warm weather, a light to moderate breeze, calm, flat waters and wonderful company.

A special THANK YOU to Captain Charles Buckner who generously donated his time and boat for this event!!! Without our very generous boatowners, there would not be any on-the-water events.
Thanks also to participants; (l-r) Nikki, Brenda, Tracy, Steve, Jill, Charles, Bill and Mya for raising money for Sailors Helping!
We Need You
Committees
Volunteers Still Needed

Volunteers are needed to  assist the 2018 BoD with:

Philanthropy: Act as a liaison between BoD and our chosen charity(s). Provide  updates to general membership, spearhead philanthropic activities, etc.

Programming: Organize and oversee the program and/or speakers for our monthly meetings. Report to BoD, etc.

Don't want to jump into the deep end by yourself? Grab a friend and tackle the task together. And don't worry, we're all new at this and fully support one another, so you'll not be alone!

Everyone on the BoD and committees are volunteers. The more people that are involved, the greater chance of success for WSA-OC. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions about the positions, email Commodore Risa/Melanie

Be Part of the Group

We have created a closed Facebook group; it is only for current WSA-OC members. This is a page in which you can easily interact with fellow members by developing a crew list, sharing information, photos, etc. It is also a great place to look for racing or cruising opportunities.
