What is AL Doing to Keep Your Kids Safe?

As you know at the Oak campus we added our "secure entrance," but did you know that multiple times a year we practice security drills (intruder, perimeter, lock-down, and evacuation), as well as fire, tornado, and earthquake drills? We train our staff on various medical conditions, food allergies, and have CPR training every other year.

When addressing more serious chronic conditions, our nurse gives one-on-one training and discusses a plan of care with the staff in charge of that particular student.

We also keep AEDs & emergency epinephrine near the front entrance at both campuses. We are continuously evaluating our processes to ensure the safest environment for our students and staff.

Have a safe and wonderful spring break!

Application Data for 2018-2019 diversity

As you know, our commitment to diversity is a priority at Académie Lafayette. With that in mind, we wanted to share with you the final numbers for this year's application season. We had 66 applicants for 1st grade. Sixty-four percent of those applications were from minorities. Thirty-six percent of them were from African Americans. We received 242 new applications for Kindergarten. Fifty-eight percent of them were from minorities and thirty one percent of them were from African Americans. We will not have socio-economic data to share until after the beginning of the next school year. We are including the graph below to show you our growth.

This accomplishment is the collective work of so many people in our school community: from administration, to parents and students--including our 3rd-grade and 8th-grade student ambassadors. As always, our best publicity is word of mouth. Keep telling your friends, neighbors, and coworkers about your experience at Académie Lafayette and our diverse school community.

Not Goodbyegoodbye

I wanted to take a minute to let all of you know that I will be leaving Académie Lafayette. I have been offered an amazing opportunity with Show Me KC Schools as their Director of Programs. The decision was a great struggle for me as I sincerely love everything about this school. I have loved working with the staff. I have loved watching all of the kids grow over these past years. I have loved the friendships I have created with many of the parents. I love our school culture.

There are so many people I will miss not seeing every day. But this is not goodbye. I will still work for charter school expansion as a parent. I will still work to help all families in Kansas City have equal access to quality education in my new position. I will also still be a hard-working parent volunteer for this school.

Thank you for these years of growth and support.  I am very proud of all that we have accomplished in the interest of diversity over the past four years. I am excited about the future of our great school.

I wish each of you the best and I look forward to continuing to be a part of our community.

Sincerely,
Leslie Kohlmeyer

REbeL Teaches 1st Graders Self-Esteemrebel

REbeL is a club for 7th and 8th grade girls at Oak campus. The members who are in 7th grade returned this week to Cherry to share the message of positive body image, good self-esteem, and loving yourself just the way you are.

The 7th graders developed their own lesson about embracing our unique qualities and differences. They read stories and partnered with students from Mme. Chloe Gaillot's 1st grade class. It was a great opportunity for Oak students to mentor our younger Cherry students!

Oak Campus Journée Culturelle  journeeculturelle

Thanks to the great response we received last year from Journée Culturelle, The Oak campus will have a second annual Journée Culturelle, Wednesday, May 30!

The theme for this year's song, skit, and dance filled program is " Liberty and Freedom Around the World."

To clarify, unlike the Winter Concert, which is mandatory for students and teachers, the Spring Journée Culturelle is voluntary. Teachers are volunteering extra time to help students learn songs, skits and dances from around the world. However, not all teachers are able to do this because of other classroom commitments.

In addition, even if your student's class is participating  not all students in the class will be in the performance because it is voluntary. We understand that spring is a very busy time for some students with sports and other commitments so students were offered the opportunity to volunteer to perform.

However, even if they are not in the production, all students will participate as audience members during the daytime student-only performance. Parents, please do not plan to come to the daytime performance because of space constraints.

Parents are encouraged to attend the evening performance,  May 30,  from  5:30-7:00 pm . Please plan to join us!

Thank you for your strong support of our school.
The Journée Culturelle Committee

We Need YOU to Host an Intern!   intern

We are excited about expanding the intern program to 11 interns in the fall of 2018! We are counting on families in our school community to welcome an intern in their home.

For the last eight years it's been my privilege to coordinate the intern program. I've studied abroad in France and lived with a host family, and this program is very close to my heart. I believe in what we do.

Interns are university students from French speaking countries who are pursuing a career in education and apply to spend a year working in the classrooms of our youngest students. I review intern candidates' resumes, review references, interview them in depth and make sure they are a good fit for our school. They also fill out a lengthy questionnaire about the host family experience that helps me match them with families.

Host families open their homes and welcome an intern for a semester or for a year. They provide a private bedroom and meals when you are together as a family. The school provides a generous monthly stipend to the intern and a monthly city bus pass. One special perk of hosting an intern is that your children will extra practice with their French at home!

If you'd like to find out more about hosting an intern, please contact Diane Balagna, at  816-888-7400,  dbalagna@academielafayette.org .
