Lead Prevention Week efforts lead to increased testing and referrals
Sixteenth Street's Lead Outreach Program spent Lead
Prevention Week  in the  lobbies of our various locations talking to as many people as possible about lead poisoning risks and prevention. The goal - to find families who may be at risk, get them tested and educate around abatement. In one week, the team talked with nearly 70 families, scheduled 2 home visits in Waukesha, provided 58 referrals and facilitated 10 admissions.
Sixteenth Street - Parkway Location celebrates 10 years with Reach Out and Read

Our Sixteenth Street - Parkway Location recently celebrated 10 years of providing books to our patients through the Reach Out and Read program. We are so grateful to have been able to provide our patients with this much-needed resource and education! Fun fact: it has been 19 years with the program at our Chavez location!
Environmental Health hosting fall after-school programs for the first time

For the first time, Sixteenth Street's Environmental Health Department is hosting a fall after-school environmental program at Windlake and Lincoln Elementary. It is focused around the changes happening in the Kinnickinnic River neighborhood. The after-school program, "KK River Explorers," is a place-based educational program in which students have had the opportunity to canoe along the Kinnickinnic River, bike along the Menominee River, hike on the Kinnickinnic River Trail and have class in Pulaski Park.  The program helps students understand how one's individual health is connected to a healthy built and natural environment. In adding this opportunity to our existing spring programming allows us to double our impact in the neighborhood.

When I was invited to the Healthy Choices Adult Nutrition and Cooking Education Classes I wasn't sure I was going to do it. The first day I arrived I was scared. The second day I didn't want to go. The third day felt wonderful...

Stress, depression and even relapse of drug and alcohol abuse this time of year can manifest for several reasons: social isolation, economic pressures, family tensions, grief and loss, substance abundance, and unrealistic expectations all contribute to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, sadness, and even irritability. Understanding the source of one's stress and practicing self-care can go a long way in helping many individuals make it through the hustle and bustle of holiday stress ... CONTINUE READING
