Dear KLSD Community,

It has been a most challenging week and some thank you’s are in order:

  • To the many staff members who have worked long days and nights to be sure our schools would be safe and ready to open today
  • To the officials of the towns we serve and the emergency management folks with whom we’ve been in frequent communication
  • To the various town road crews that have worked tirelessly to clear the routes that allow our students to get to school, and allow us all to travel safely

We appreciate the efforts of all who helped us get back to school.

I hope this latest edition of our newsletter arrives to you in a home that has power and is warm, and if not today, very, very soon.

Elementary School Science Fairs Encourage Curiosity
Katonah Elementary School kicked off the 2018 science fair season on February 16 with insights on animal whiskers to remote controlled cars. READ MORE.

More young scientists will display their projects at Increase Miller Elementary School's Science Fair on March12 and Meadow Pond Elementary School's on April 17.
Observation & Investigation at the Middle School Science Fair
What do animals really see? How does Bluetooth work? How does the shape of the car affect air resistance? Can radishes grow "watered" with soda? What happens when a person vapes?

These and more than forty other questions were investigated at the John Jay Middle School Science Fair on February 28.

Doo-wop Musical "Leader of the Pack" Opens March 15
John Jay Middle School's spring musical, "Leader of the Pack," will be presented March 15, 16, and 17 at 7:00 p.m. and March 17 at 1:00 p.m. in the JJMS Theater.

The hit Broadway musical includes "Da Doo Ron Ron," "Be My Baby,""Chapel of Love," and of course, (vroom-vroom) "Leader of the Pack"!

Student Creativity Showcased in Rite of Spring Art Show
Rite of Spring, an annual show of John Jay High School's Visual Arts Department, is open to the public on Thursday, March 22, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.. It features students' drawings, paintings, photographs, films, and pottery.

John Jay High School Has Five National Merit Finalists
Congratulations to John Jay’s National Merit Scholarship Finalists Lane Carbaugh, Samuel Chen, Kailas Amin, Katherine Ricca, and Kaley Mamo! 

Becoming a National Merit Finalist requires a top score on the PSAT as well as an outstanding academic record, leadership positions, a recommendation by a school official, and SAT scores that confirm their qualifying test performance.
Hockey Team Competes in NY State "Frozen Four" this Weekend!
Board of Education and Budget News
The administration and Board of Education have completed their review of the 2018-2019 school year budget. The following are some of the initiatives supported by the proposed budget:
  • Continued expansion of KLSD partnership with Columbia University Teachers College to provide professional development to elementary school teachers to support students in the areas of reading and writing
  • Staffing to support favorable class size across the District
  • Increased opportunity for after-school athletic participation among middle and high school students

The proposed budget will be discussed at the March 15 Board meeting and is expected to be adopted at the March 22 Board meeting.
