Sherman College Collects Hundreds of Toys for Tots

Kappa Chi Community Service and Outreach Club had a successful second year of its Toys for Tots drive on the Sherman College campus. The group collected 437 toys, an impressive increase over last year’s 190 toys. In fact, the number of toys collected exceeds the student population (400) on campus! Students, faculty and staff participated in the drive, with Kappa Chi and the Torque Release Technique Clubs donating their club funds toward getting additional toys.

Radiology Department Chair Laura Greene-Orndorff, R.T., D.C., ’95, whose entire eighth-quarter class brought donations in, agreed. “These students really touched my heart,” she said. “I’m so impressed that students take time to make life a little happier for those less fortunate. What wonderful, caring, compassionate doctors [are] coming your way, world!” Read more on our blog .
Bookstore Leads Drive for Puerto Rico Relief Efforts

The Sherman College Bookstore collected hundreds of items to send to Puerto Rico as part of relief efforts following Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 hurricane that affected millions, including some of our own Sherman College community and their extended family and friends.

“I’m overwhelmed with the outpouring of generosity from our faculty, staff, students and administration,” said Bookstore/ Mailroom Manager Angela Thrift. “Sherman College prides itself on fostering a family atmosphere, so when Hurricane Maria ripped through Puerto Rico and so many of our Sherman family were affected, it seemed only natural that we, as a Sherman community, would want to help in some way. We are very pleased to be sending 17 boxes of items for the Hurricane Maria Relief Efforts on behalf of the Sherman College family.”

Items collected included diapers, baby wipes, insect repellent, band-aids, bandages, baby foods, canned goods, clothing, batteries, feminine supplies, toiletries, wash cloths and more. For every 10 cans of food or baby food donated, individuals received a gift certificate to the bookstore for 15% off their next purchase. The Bookstore shipped items out in early December to the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Puerto Rico, with thanks to Anatomy Lab Manager Dr. Edgardo Rivera, who offered us this connection. The lodge will serve as the college’s point of contact for distributing the items at no cost to those who need them.

Santa Claus Visits
Chiropractic Health Center

Santa Claus posed for photos and shared hot cocoa and holiday cookies with his fans, young and older, on December 5 at the Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center.

Most of our guests loved having Santa there; some of the little ones were a bit unsure about him. But our interns, patients and employees (and their families) all enjoyed the chance to spend time with Santa, make their wishes known and spread some holiday cheer.

Ambassador Spotlight: Chris
Lauren Corvi of Columbia, SC

Why Chiropractic:
Truthfully, chiropractic sort of fell in my lap. My best friend went to Sherman College and invited me to Lyceum. I immediately fell in love with the philosophy and mission of chiropractic. Chiropractors have the ability to help others and empower people to choose a healthier, happier life.

Favorite thing about Sherman:
I love that Sherman feels like one huge family. Everyone knows your face, if not your name and your story. People are always willing to lend a hand or shed some advice. We truly have some of the greatest staff, team, and colleagues.

Seven Sherman Students Receive School Pride Awards

Thanks to the generosity of Sherman Pride Day sponsors, Sherman College has awarded seven students with School Pride Awards. These seven students will each receive a $500 tuition credit for the winter 2018 quarter: Kathleen Costello, Jimmy Craft, Taylor Fortune, Russell Goff, Hui Zhen Lim, Christian Ortiz and Teena Rowe. The funding for these awards comes from money raised through sponsorships for Sherman Pride Day, which was held on October 12.

To be considered for the Pride Awards, students were asked to show how they share or exemplify Sherman Pride in their lives, using words, photos or videos. Alumni Association First Vice President Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, was happy to see a strong turnout of applicants sharing their love for the college. “My life was changed and molded by my time at Sherman,” she said. “It is humbling to see how Sherman continues to do such in the lives of our future chiropractors.” Read about and see photos of the Pride Award recipients on our blog.
