Letter from the Artistic Director
Spring is coming! We promise. Time to shed your winter woolies, watch the robins return and...wait for it...come back to the theatre!
This month, we have multiple opportunities for actors of all ages and shapes and sizes and levels of experience. And we're premiering a fascinating and surprisingly funny play about....science; cue obscure Thomas Dolby reference.
Photograph 51 tells the story of Dr. Rosalind Franklin, and her largely uncredited role in the discovery of DNA's double helix structure. A group of chemists and biologists, six distinct and colorful individuals, race to map the molecular structure of our genetic code. Winner of the 2016 WhatsOnStage Award, it's a play about ambition, isolation, and the unique challenges facing a woman who operates in a field dominated by men.
Photograph 51 opens on March 9th and runs for three weekends. There will be live science demonstrations presented by Imagination Station on March 10, 24 & 25! Presentations will take place 90 minutes prior to the performance.
March at The Rep also includes auditions for five upcoming productions. If acting is on your bucket or your to-do list, this month we surely have something for you.
On Saturday March 10th (1:00-4:00 pm) and Sunday March 11th (4:00-7:00 pm) we're having combined auditions for a trio of staged readings, "The Rainbow Series", to be presented the first three weekends in April. With more than 30 available roles and brief rehearsal periods, this is a great opportunity for newcomers and/or actors with limited availability. You can audition for one two, or all three readings.
Young Rep auditions begin that same weekend, Sunday March 11th (1:00-3:00 pm) and Monday March 12th (6:00-8:00 pm). The show is
Pirates! Theodore Thud and the Quest for Weird Beard, and children ages 7-13 are encouraged to audition. There is no participation fee.
And on the 19th and 20th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, we'll be auditioning for our big June musical,
Sweet Charity. Besides the leads, this production has a large Ensemble that plays multiple character roles.

Synopsis:
The Normal Heart is a largely autobiographical play that focuses on the rise of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and 1984 as seen through the eyes of writer/activist Ned Weeks, the founder of The Gay Men's Health Crisis. Ned prefers loud public confrontations to the calmer, more private strategies favored by his associates, friends, and closeted lover Felix Turner. Their difference of opinion lead to frequent arguments that threaten to undermine their mutual goal. Originally produced Off-Broadway, a revival opened on Broadway in 2011, and was adapted into an award-winning HBO movie in 2014

Synopsis:
The Children's Hour revolves around idle gossip between schoolgirls that escalates into a fiasco. The story is a powerful tale of truth and lack thereof. Hellman creates a tense atmosphere between teachers and pupils. Problem-child Mary Tilford accuses her teachers, Karen Wright and Martha Dobie, of foul play. She says she hears "strange noises" coming from their room and "gets scared" because she doesn't know what they are up to. Mary "confesses" her self-made lie to her grandmother, who begins the demise of the teachers. This attack on Dobie and Wright leads them to question their own relationships, in both personal and professional ways.

Synopsis:
Act One recounts the major episodes of the Old Testament, but instead of Adam and Eve, our lead characters are Adam and Steve, and Jane and Mabel, a lesbian couple with whom they start civilization. Act One covers the Garden of Eden, an ark, a visit with a highly rambunctious Pharaoh and finally even the Nativity. Along the way, Mabel and Adam invent God, but Jane and Steve are skeptical. Act Two jumps to modern day Manhattan. Adam and Steve are together again, and Steve is HIV positive. It's Christmas Eve, and Jane is nine months pregnant even though she always thought of herself as the butch one. The two women want to marry and want Adam and Steve to join them in the ceremony. A wheelchair-bound, Jewish lesbian Rabbi from cable access TV arrives to officiate.

A friendly game of pirates becomes all too real when overzealous Theodore accidentally falls into a giant sinkhole and wakes up to find himself amongst real high sea swashbucklers. Before getting back to the real world, he is forced on an epic journey with his companion Harriet the Ghost in a quest to find the notorious pirate Weird Beard and foil the mutinous Mr. Clunky Bones. Will Theodore be able to save Captain Cramp Hand's ship from falling into evil clutches and return to his friends in time for ice cream?

Toledo Rep to Showcase Debut Plays
"Toledo Voices", the Toledo Repertoire Theatre's series that debuts
works
by local playwrights, returns this weekend to the 10th Street Stage.
The series, which presents readings of previously unproduced plays, opens at 8 p.m. Saturday and continues on March 31 and April 28. The readings will be followed with a talkback with the writer, cast, and director.
"It's a unique opportunity for actors as well as the whole creative team to bring new work to the stage with the writer's involvement, but more than that, it's important, an essential component in the process. Every well-known play started somewhere, with some process of development. I am constantly reading new work outside of the parameters of "Toledo Voices", and have offered feedback if requested. Coming mostly from school and community theatre, the Toledo theatre community is not as plugged into that opportunity, but it's there." "This is a relatively new initiative that we are building from the inside," said Dave DeChristopher, The Rep's artistic director. "We want to be a resource for local writers and a development unit for new work. Last season, in addition to "Toledo Voices", we produced a new play by local playwright Eric Pfeffinger as well as a relatively new play by Milan, Mich., playwright Joseph Zettelmaier, who came to see the production."

'Photograph 51' Has Science In Its DNA
Photograph 51, the story of British scientist Rosalind Franklin and her key role in the early 1950s in the discovery of the structure of DNA and the blueprint for life, opens Friday at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre.
Anna Ziegler's play, winner of the 2016 WhatsOnStage Award, looks at the independent and ambitious Franklin's achievements in a field dominated by men, work that was overlooked in the competition for acclaim.
"The subject is formal of course, it's about science, but the play is very engaging," said Dave DeChristopher,
Photograph 51's director and The Rep's artistic director.
"It has rolling narration, with each character sharing his particular recollection (and prejudices) straight to the audience. Sometimes they are even competing with each other for our attention, which is delicious. It also has a 'meta' element, in which characters are in the middle of scenes and sometimes pop out to tell us what they were thinking at the time ... as they remember or misremember it, and at times, the line between recollection and reality becomes blurred."

On February 24th, the amazing students from our Young Rep Ed Winter Session, "IMPROV!" (Ages 7-17) showcased what they had been up to for the past eight weeks as they studied the fundamentals of improv comedy through games and exercises that helped to develop strong ensemble and character work. In this family-friendly session, students developed stage presence, self-confidence, communication skills and respect for other performers and their creativity.

On February 24th, our adult acting class, "The Craft of Acting II", began. This eight-week course, taught by Dr. Deborah Coulter-Harris, focuses on physical and vocal characterization and stage presence and is designed for those who seek to improve their craft.

The Rep is Looking For Videographer Volunteers!
The Toledo Repertoire Theatre is looking for qualified individuals to perform freelance videography work for
our marketing/advertising team. The goal of our marketing department is to strengthen the
Toledo Rep brand and to promote all events, programs, classes, productions and outreach
initiatives of the Toledo Repertoire Theatre.
As a videography volunteer, you should be prepared to work in an exciting, creative and fast-paced environment.
Candidates should have an entrepreneurial mindset for project development and a strong
drive to take on challenges. They must be self-motivated, a strong team player, able to
think outside the box, and be comfortable taking the lead in facilitating, planning and
executing the digital video productions of the Toledo Rep.
Responsibilities
* To create promotional videos which will be used and distributed online through the
Toledo Rep website, email announcements, video sharing sites, social media
networking, and lobby displays, with a possibility of footage being used in larger
markets in the future.
* Video coverage expected of, but not limited to, all Mainstage productions, all Young Rep
productions, all special events, all readings, all fundraisers, all Rep Ed classes,
workshops and showcases, and general season promotion.
* Integrate photography, text, graphics, animation, voice over, testimony, etc. to create
vibrant videos that bring the Toledo Rep to life.
* Consult with directors, casts, and the marketing department to create premium content.
* Other responsibilities might include, but are not limited to, creating educational footage
to accompany the staged productions in the form of informational, historical videos that
will play in the lobby for our patrons and guests.
The is an unpaid, volunteer position.

Education is one of the central aspects of our mission here at the Toledo Rep and we are always looking for new instructors to include in our program. If you are interested in being a part of our education program, please let us know! A background in teaching is desired, although not necessarily required. We are looking for people experienced in one or more of the many aspects of theatre, with a passion and desire to share those experiences and skills with others. Our program includes classes, workshops and camps for children, teens and adults.
