Interim's Report for March
"He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, 'If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'" (Mark 8:34)
Dear friends,
This year we hear from Mark's gospel on Sundays. Mark has Jesus slowly move south to Jerusalem and his fate. In Luke, this is more pronounced. Luke phrases it as "Jesus set his face to Jerusalem." The church year moves quickly from Jesus' birth, to his baptism and to the Transfiguration. It is the Transfiguration that turns Jesus' ministry toward Jerusalem.
In Lent, we travel with Jesus to Jerusalem. The attacks on Jesus' credibility by the religious authorities in Jerusalem intensify. We hear Jesus being attacked and wonder at Jesus' wisdom as he defends himself. There is tension among the disciples as the apostle's jockey for influence. All the while, we are all unaware of a wolf in sheep's clothing being among us.
We know that going to Jerusalem is dangerous. The Sanhedrin have an armed guard. The Romans are in league with the temple priests. If Jesus doesn't behave like they want him to, there could be violence.
March will end with Holy Week. On the last Sunday of the month we will wave palms, rejoicing in Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Then we will walk away, stunned, that he is dead. The church compresses Jesus' last week into one Sunday.
Meanwhile, Holy Week's liturgies continue their daily events in Jerusalem leading up to Good Friday. We will walk into church that day knowing what will happen. Yet we go anyway to honor our spiritual founder and leader.
Our walk with Jesus to Jerusalem gives us an opportunity reflect on Jesus' impact on our lives and our spirituality. How do we hear Jesus' words and apply them to us? Do we automatically accept Jesus' side with his arguments with the authorities or do they have a point? How does the rejection of Jesus by the authorities relate to Christianity in this country today? You may have your own questions. There is much to ponder during Lent.
In April, it gets really better.

Lenten Soup Suppers
Welcome to March and the continuation of our Soup Suppers and programs. It is, in my opinion, a wonderful Trinity tradition that deepens and enhances our Lenten experience -- breaking bread together and learning something meaningful.
Since we, optimally, count on 5 pots of soup for the 5 Wednesdays (and bread/butter) we host soup suppers, that means a total of 25 pots of soup. We know that most everyone has a favorite recipe for a pot of soup that they could bring to share. Someone has generously been bringing bread to share. Please exercise your generosity in the form of committing to bringing a pot of soup to an upcoming Soup Supper. The sign-ups are on a clipboard in the parish hall. Thanks! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Most people just bring their soup in a crockpot and plug it in on the table. Trinity provides the ladles, etc. If there are embellishments like pumpkin seeds, cheese, sour cream, yogurt; just bring them and put in a bowl.

Anglicanism Lenten Study Series
After our Lenten soup suppers, there will be an opportunity to learn more about Anglicanism. The Episcopal Church is part of the Anglican Communion and our heritage is in Anglicanism. Anglicanism is a broad term that explains who we are by the events and thinkers who shaped Anglicanism. This was centered in Britain and exported to the American colonies by England and the English Church.
The 5 part series continues as follows:
Mar. 7 is Anglican standards, Prayer books, The Articles of Religion, Catechisms, Lex Orandi- Lex Credendi, Canon Law. Mar. 14 is Sacraments and Ministry. Mar. 21 will be about Anglicanism in Practice: spirituality, morality, sociology, missions, Anglican Communion.

All are invited to join the Trinity Singers/Worship Team! Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7pm.
