Family Medicine Takes Center Stage Wednesday at State Capitol
Family physicians in the Capitol Rotunda during Capitol Day.
Two dozen Mississippi family physicians, residents and medical students turned out for MAFP Capitol Day on Wednesday, making important contacts with state legislators.

MAFP Capitol Day began with a buffet breakfast in the Capitol Rotunda, where doctors greeted legislators, who then had the opportunity to be screened for cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure from MEA Medical Clinics.

After a tour of the Capitol building, including the on-site medical clinic, attendees briefly sat in the Gallery to see the Senate at work, and were formally recognized from the floor by Sen. Terry Burton of Newton.

Some physicians attended committee meetings to see debates first-hand. The group also heard briefings on current issues from Ashley Thompson, MAFP Advocacy Director, and Eric Waskowicz of AAFP in Washington, D.C.

Mid-morning, MAFP furnished desserts and coffee to more than 75 legislators and gave them Mississippi-made coffee mugs from Peter's Pottery. Caricature artist Ricky Nobile was on hand to draw legislators on the spot. Here, attendees had a chance to meet their local leaders, some for the first time.

Special guests spoke to MAFP during a members-only lunch. State Sen. Chris McDaniel and state Rep. David Baria, who are challenging U.S. Senator Roger Wicker for his seat in November, outlined their platforms for the group. State Rep. Michael Evans and state Sen. Sally Doty, both running to represent Mississippi's Third Congressional District this November, also campaigned. Family physicians also welcomed Dr. Mary Currier, State Health Officer, Miss. Department of Health, as a special guest during lunch.

MAFP President Dr. Katie Patterson, left, with Reps. Jody Steverson of Ripley, center, and Chris Johnson of Hattiesburg.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians was well-represented at the Capitol on Wednesday during our annual Capitol Day. We had many family physicians, residents, and students in attendance. Our members were able to speak with legislators on advancing Family Medicine in Mississippi and give family physicians some insight about how Mississippi's laws are made. We would like to thank the American Academy of Family Physicians for their support of our Capitol Day.

On Monday, we will begin the 70th day of the 2018 Legislative Session. Next week marks the beginning of the end of the legislative session, but that does not mean things slow down at the Capitol. In fact, things speed up and start moving very fast. There are 14 deadlines that legislators must meet over the next 20 days. We need doctors to call House members, in particular, the Speaker's Office by next Tuesday to show support for the $1.50 Cigarette Tax increase in Senate Bill 3048. The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians continues to monitor the progress of the Mississippi Medcaid Technical Amendments bill. This bill provides the guidelines that Medicaid operates under for the next several years.

Thus far, Family Medicine has had an extraordinary legislative session because of the commitment of our members! Please continue to check your emails for Calls To Action because your voice makes a difference on the issues. Get the latest on our Legislative page.
University of Nebraska Medical Center Needs Your Help!
Paid Advertisement. Hello Family Physicians of Mississippi! Are you interested in sharing your practices for prescribing medications for mental and behavioral health concerns for your pediatric patients?

We are a team of pediatric psychologists and psychology interns at the Munroe-Meyer Institute in Omaha, Nebraska. We focus on providing behavioral health services and conducting research on the provision of mental/behavioral health services in primary care settings.

We have developed an online, anonymous survey that aims to investigate family physicians' experience with managing mental and behavioral health concerns (e.g., medication or behavior management) and their comfort with doing so. We believe this information would be helpful in determining whether there is a need for behavioral health service providers in family medicine practices, particularly in rural areas where referral options are limited.

Our study has been approved by our institutional review board (project number: 57113EX) and responses would be completely voluntary and anonymous. Responding takes approximately 10 minutes.  If you have any questions feel free to contact: Holly Roberts Ph.D .

Our research is NOT sponsored by drug companies or any other organization.

Patterson Testifies for MAFP at Wednesday's Opioid Public Hearing
Dr. Katherine Patterson, MAFP President, spoke to the members of the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure (MSBML) at a public hearing Wednesday, March 7. Proposed new opioid regulations were at issue and she suggested several changes to the proposals based upon feedback MAFP has received from members. The text of Dr. Patterson's remarks can be found here.

Proposed Opioid Prescribing Regulations Filed Feb. 14. These proposed regulations must go before the Occupational Licensing Review Board before taking effect.

Collaboration Hearing:  March 21
The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure (MSBML) has changed the regulation that nurse practitioners must practice within 75 miles of their collaborating primary care physician. On Feb. 26, MAFP sent a letter to MSBML outlining our requests on this issue.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, at 1 pm at MSBML headquarters. MAFP is asking members to submit any feedback about the collaborative agreement changes so we can incorporate that feedback into our response.

Proposed Changes to Collaborative Agreement, filed Feb. 6. The  proposed regulation must be reviewed by the new Occupational Licensing Review Board before final approval.

Only 3 Weeks Left to File MIPS Data, Avoid the Medicare 4% Penalty
Do you know how much money you will lose if you don't report your MIPS data by the March 31 deadline? The penalty for not participating is substantial, and now is the time to act!

Those eligible clinicians who don't report their Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) data to CMS are subject to a 4 percent penalty for each Medicare claim beginning Jan. 1, 2019.  There is no reason to accept a 4 percent decrease in Medicare reimbursement in 2019. Find out how to take action - get details on our QPP page.
