DEADLINES

Breed council ballots must be returned by December 19th.

There's just the slightest tinge of red on the trees here in central North Carolina. Could it be that fall is actually on its way? I was beginning to think that I might be packing sandals for my trip to the International Show this weekend, and that seemed particularly odd as this show has always been in November.

For those of you traveling to Cleveland, safe travels and have fun! I know that I'm really excited to be seeing everyone there!
Teresa

We held a board meeting on Saturday and Sunday, October 6 & 7, at the Feline Historical Museum in Ohio. We had more visitors than usual and we were happy to welcome Mulin Yang (a/k/a Morning), Jimmy Lee, Allen Shi, Alex Luk Chun Lap all from Asia and Cyndy Byrd from California & Jay Langlois from North Carolina. It is always nice to have visitors to our board meetings but we particularly appreciate those who traveled long distances to be with us. Based on Facebook comments, they appear to have enjoyed the opportunity to check out the museum while they were with us. We also had some local fanciers attend including Jim Flanik, Shirley Dent, and Karen Lawrence.   As always, the Central Office staff did a great job of accommodating all our needs. Thanks in particular to Allene Tartaglia, Verna Dobbins, and Brian Buetel.

Kathy Black has published her notes  from the board meeting for those who are interested in a short version of what happened. Our Secretary is already at work on the official minutes and we will send out a CFA-News notice when they are online. It was a productive meeting and we were able to finish early. That was a result of the entire board working together going through the various topics on the Agenda. The main topic for our October meetings are show rule changes and that is always time-consuming. We appreciate Monte Phillips, chair of that committee, attending the meeting to help us work through the proposed changes.

Our next board meeting is scheduled for the second Tuesday of December and will be a 3-hour teleconference. Our next in-person board meeting will be the first weekend of February. In February the board will come in a day early to follow-up on last February's Strategic Planning Session. The main topics for our February board meetings are breeds and standards. New breeds being considered for registration make presentations and we vote on the results of the various Breed Council ballots.

I hope many of you plan to join us for this year's CFA International Cat Show sponsored by Royal Canin. Many people have been working hard for months to make sure you have a good experience. This year we added a hospitality event Friday night thanks to some generous sponsors within the cat fancy.

I am often asked how many clubs are members of CFA and which are the larger Regions. Here is a chart showing where our 619 clubs are throughout the world. The ID clubs are in a variety of countries including China and other parts of Asia as well as in other parts of the world. The chart includes the new clubs accepted at the recent board meeting on October 6-7.

Our board members are conscious of the fact that each was elected to represent their constituents. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to one of us.

Verna Dobbins Deputy Director

Welcome to October! Central Office wishes you a Spooktacular  month.

Central Office is very busy at this time of year. As this letter is being written we are preparing for the October BOD meeting, and as always it is our privilege and pleasure to host this meeting.

Show Licensing
CO is pleased to announce that your show license fees can now be made from the CFA Catalog, http://catalog.cfa.org/show-licensing.shtml  this should make it easier for the clubs to get the licensing fees into CO.

Breed Council/Committee
We are working with Carla Bizzell, Rachel Anger, and Kathy Durdick so that we can have the Breed Council/Committee ballots ready to launch by October 25th. Most BC members will receive an email with directions for voting on line. If you do not have an email address on file with Central Office your ballot will be sent to you by postal service. The deadline for all voting is December 19th. Ballots will be accepted 3 ways, online voting, by postal service and by email (mwatson@cfa.org).   All ballots must be completed and received in CO by 11:59pm edt on December 19th.

If you have any questions please contact Melissa Watson.

Giving Back
From late August through September Central Office did a drive for the local Humane Society here in Stark County, we were able to collect over 400 much needed items. Kylie Westfall took charge of this drive, split CO into teams and had a competition. The winning team in CO was Jordan, Melissa, Linda, Erica, Mariane & Lindsay - congrats to them for their collecting skills! The REAL winners were the cats and dogs at the shelter, we wish them all the best in finding their forever homes.
Amanda Ganni & Kylie Westfall
Holidays
The holidays are fast approaching and Central Office staff will be taking some time for their families. The Central Office will be closed on the dates listed below.
  • November 22nd and 23rd for Thanksgiving
  • December 24th & 25th for Christmas

Meet the CFA Central Office Staff!
Shelly Borawski

interview by Geri Fellerman

Shelly first joined CFA in November of 1987 (Happy anniversary!). Shelly started in CFA's New Jersey location; at that time, she was in charge of the printed Almanac. The yearbook fell into Shelly's very capable hands in 2004. Beginning in 2007, she also became responsible for working with the Annual every year, including check-in and whatever else needed to be done. A large portion of that is creating and presenting the all-important slide show at the banquet. At the International show each year, Shelly can be found working over the CFA booth. The organization and publication of the White Pages also falls under her jurisdiction.

The fun part of the job is that she is always very busy. At the Annual, she gets to meet the people she prepares ads for during the year. For some reason she actually enjoys the challenge of putting the yearbook together each year, a task that would be daunting to many.

Prior to joining CFA, Shelly graduated from Trenton State College in 1986. Her first job was as a typesetter, after which she moved on to CFA and has been with CFA ever since. She is happy about being able to stay in New Jersey and work from home when Central Office was moved to Ohio.

Shelly is married and has a dog named Bogey. She enjoys playing golf in summer and skiing in winter. Aside from International shows, she attended local cat shows in the Freehold area when they were held there. Going to shows almost tempted her to get a cat, but for now she remains a dog person

Eve Russell
Eve receiving an award from Rachel Anger at the New Orleans' Annual.

Long-time exhibitor Eve Russell lost her battle with cancer a few weeks ago. While her death was not unexpected, it still struck to the hearts of cat fanciers who had known her throughout her 40+ years in the cat fancy. She was, as one long-time fancier remembered, "a force of nature."
Eve leading in the credentials committee at the Toronto Annual.

Many people knew Eve from her position as chair of the CFA Credentials Committee. She served on the committee for 39 years. Every year, as she led the committee into the Annual meeting, delegates were filled with both excitement and dread: excited that the results of the balloting were finally going to be announced, and dread that their club would be one of those announced as having their ballot disqualified!

Other fanciers will remember her as serving as chair of the ribbon/rosette committee for the CFA International Show for at least 30 years.

Eve was a cornerstone of both the Mid-Michigan Cat Fanciers and of the Great Lakes region. She worked tirelessly for both providing rosettes for her club and for the regional shows, organizing potluck lunches for the Great Lakes Regional Show, and contributing to a club which produced 10 shows a year. In 2018, she was inducted into the Great Lakes Hall of Fame.

Exhibitors, especially those in Premiership, will remember Eve as a competitor there. She had over 20 national wins with Burmese, Bombays, Exotics, Manx, and American Shorthairs under the cattery name Karleton.

What is this trendy thing called Instagram (IG) that all the cool kids seem to be into? It's been around for a few years, quietly picking up traction mostly thanks to everybody's new obsession with mobile photography , so don't feel embarrassed to ask if you have absolutely no clue what it's all about.
Instagram is a photo-sharing social media platform that was created in 2010 and bought by Facebook in 2012 for $1 billion. With more than 1 billion people using it monthly, Instagram is a growing social media platform that we shouldn't be afraid to use.

Our IG, @CFACATS, has grown to 1500 followers in just a few short months and we are steadily increasing our fan base. When we post a photo or video, it is displayed on our profile. Users who follow us will see our posts in their own feed and can love it, comment on it and/or share it with friends. Likewise, we will see posts from other users whom we follow. Pretty straight forward, right? It's like a simplified version of Facebook, with an emphasis on mobile use and photo sharing. Just like other social networks, we can interact with other users on Instagram by following them, being followed by them, commenting, liking, tagging and private messaging.
With cats being so popular on the internet, there is no shortage of ways in which instagram can support CFA growth. By using Instagram as one of our marketing tools, we can:
  • Reach new audiences
  • Increase brand awareness
  • Drive more traffic to our website
  • Attract potential partners & sponsors
  • Learn what the modern cat culture likes
  • Identify and establish relationships with influencers
  • Nurture existing relationships
  • Build and maintain a community
In addition to our daily posts which generally mirror our Facebook posts, we used Instagram as a tool to specifically target a new younger (ages 18-32) audience in the Cleveland area for the
International Show. You can see in the image below how the specified Instagram user market excitedly interacted about our cat-centric event coming to their town.

It's a fact: people love looking at pictures of cats on Instagram. CFA has a paw up on this because an adorable cat photo isn't just an easy way to call attention to our business...it is our business!

Next month: Cats and the Internet

October 14-20 is National Veterinary Technician week. Consider thanking these very special nurses with a donation to Winn. The Technician Honor Roll presents a unique opportunity to honor someone with a memorable gift that will resonate with them for years to come. For a donation of $100 or more, your respected veterinary technician will receive a letter of notification and a beautiful framed certificate suitable for proud display in their hospital. In addition, they will receive recognition on the Winn Feline Foundation website. Visit our website for more details at: https://www.winnfelinefoundation.org/programs/technician-honor-roll

Celebrate Cures4Cats Day

Winn Feline Foundation will be celebrating its second annual Cures4Cats Day on October 20. This annual day of awareness is dedicated to highlighting Winn-funded research, the critical need for evidence-based medicine, early-stage biomedical research, and health answers for cats. Since 1968, Winn has provided more than $6 million in funding to researchers who work toward a better understanding of diseases that impact cats, more effective treatments, and increasingly, cures for both complex and common feline health conditions.

This year, Winn Feline Foundation has launched a campaign to find answers for a common condition in older cats, feline kidney disease (FKD). You, our dedicated supporters, told us that this was a critical feline health issue that has touched your families. For our Cures4Cats Day, Winn will match $2 for each dollar donated on October 20th for FKD toward feline kidney disease research, up to $50,000. The campaign kicked off with a $4000 donation from the NOLA Cat Film Festival and Art for Cat's Sake Foundation.

Loving Legacy tip for September
by George Eigenhauser

Millions of Americans now have more than one source of income. Side hustles in the "gig economy" such as Uber or Lyft or Airbnb have grown increasingly popular. Many employers are hiring part time employees, temporary employees, or independent contractors. Other income sources may be as diverse as rental income, services provided for compensation, yard/garage sales, or sales on Amazon, Etsy, or Craigslist. Experts believe as many as 1/3 of taxpayers have some second source of income. Any time you earn $600 or more from a source they should provide you with a 1099 form and the IRS is sent a copy. For income sources that do not provide 1099 forms you are responsible to keeping records and reporting the income to the IRS. In addition, you may be responsible for making quarterly tax payments on the extra income. Failure to do so could result in penalties and interest in addition to the taxes due. While the extra money may help family finances, failure to report this income may have serious tax consequences.

The Cat Fanciers' Association Legislative Group has added a blog to round out the online advocacy tools at your disposal. The URL for the blog is https://cfalegislativegroup.wordpress.com/ This blog will provide fanciers with more detailed news on select items of interest, alerts and serve as a resource for your advocacy knowledge base. The CFALegislativeNews Facebook page  will continue to post news media articles, blog posts and other sources of information to provide news of interest to cat fanciers. Together both pages will provide fanciers with a broad base of tools for their advocacy needs.

Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)

New and revised APHIS flowcharts for the recently amended Retail Pet Store Exemption and new Hobby Exhibitor Exemption are the first posts on the CFA Legislative Group Blog. The Retail Pet Store Exemption chart (Do Cat Fanciers Need A USDA License?) is a revision of the Retail Pet Store Exemption flowchart created for cat fanciers after the 2013 rule change. Earlier this year, APHIS finalized the proposed De Minimis Rule resulting in minor changes pertinent to cat fanciers. The
Retail Pet Store exclusion remains the same. However, the Final Rule combined the retail and wholesale four breeding female exemption into one exemption and changed the name from the Low-risk exemption to the Hobby Dealer Exemption. Although affecting a minority of cat fanciers, the new Rule resulted in major changes to the exhibitor exemptions. Most fanciers will not be affected by this rule change as cat and dogs show activities are not included in the APHIS definition of exhibitor. For the few fanciers engaged in activities that would classify them as exhibitors under the Animal Welfare Act, such as film or advertising roles for their favorite feline, the road to exemption has changed considerably. As with the Retail Pet Store Exemption, the focus is on low-risk activities. The Final De Minimis Rule provides that an exhibitor is exempt from licensing if they maintain eight or fewer pet animals and/or domesticated farm-type animals for exhibition and is not otherwise required to be licensed. The Hobby Exhibitor exemption does not apply to any person acting in concert with others where they collectively maintain a total of eight or more covered animals for exhibition, regardless of possession or ownership (9 C.F.R. A.W.R. §2.1(a)(3)(vii)). The Retail Pet Store and Hobby Exhibitor flowcharts will help fanciers analyze their situations to determine their eligibility for exemption.

Join us on both the Facebook page and the new Legislative Blog. Together, they flesh out the CFA tools available to you for your advocacy needs. Fanciers can subscribe to get alerts whenever there is a new blog post. November is a slower month for shows in the region.
NH Feline Fanciers will host their annual show on November 3&4th in Dover NH.

Region 2

The September 22 nd Seattle Cat Club/Grandview Cat Club show was a rousing success. Everyone appeared to have a great time with lots of laughter and fun. Congratulations to the clubs for another wonderful show.

Coming up in a couple of weeks is the Emerald Cat Club show in St. Helens, OR. This is a two day back to back show in a really interesting venue. The show hall is shaped as a hexagon. Took me quite a while to figure out how to bench this one. Much easier now that benching can be done on Excel. Not too late to enter as the show doesn't close until Tuesday October 16 th at NOON. Yes, NOON.

The International Show in Cleveland, Ohio is the week before the Emerald show. A few brave exhibitors will be attending this year. It is quite a long trip from the West Coast to Cleveland, OH. Next year will be easier due to the fact that Alaska Airlines will have added a non-stop to Columbus, OH: a matter of a short drive, two hours, from Columbus to Cleveland.
Most of us will be content to root on the brave exhibitors going to Cleveland this year.

November brings us two shows. The Golden Gate Cat Club will host a one day show in Lodi, CA on November 3 rd . Utah Cat Fanciers will hold a two day back to back show on November 10 -11 th in Salt Lake City Utah.

Closing out the year is Lewis and Clark's annual show in Portland, OR on December 1 &2, 2018. This is an extremely popular event held every year at the DoubleTree@Lloyd Center. An easy to get to show from the I- 5 freeway or PDX. The train takes you directly from the airport to the hotel.

Starting off the new year is the Emerald Cat Club holding a 2 nd show in Seaside, OR on January 5 th and 6 th . The weather is generally mild on the Oregon Coast so don't be afraid to enter this new and wonderful event. There is a fantastic offer from the Ebb-Tide Oceanfront Inn for the dates of the show.

I will close with the following cartoon sent to me by my husband, Dan. Hope no one is offended by it. Terri, Region 2 Secretary

Boo!! Here we are into the fall. It's October already so get out your fall decorations as summer is over for another year. While we're still seeing upper 70-upper 80 days here in Texas we are well aware that in other parts of our region they are seeing threats of snow in the upper elevations.

Happy Alternatives Cat Club show in Deer Park on 9/15-16/2018 (southeast Houston area) was a resounding success. Many of the rescues brought to the show found new forever homes. There were contests (Best decorated cage, Friendliest Exhibitor, etc.) where the visitors to the show voted. There were a total of 8 rings (7 AB, 1 LH/SH). The show filled so everyone stayed busy. The many vendors seemed to be busy as well. Hoping this show repeats again next year.

Foot of the Rockies Cat Club celebrated their 50th Anniversary along with sponsoring club National Maine Coon Cat Club on September 29-30, 2018 with an 8 ring back-to-back in Loveland, Colorado.   Top 3 Maine Coon Cats in each class were recognized in each ring with trophies for the Best-of-the-Best were given out at the end of the show.

Up in Cleveland, Ohio on October 13-14, 2018 is our CFA International Show. All of you traveling up for that show, please be safe and have lots of fun!

Upcoming later this month we have our Region 3 Fund Raiser on Saturday, October 27th and an older club with new blood becoming a show producing club, Cow Hill Cat Club, will have their show on Sunday, October 28th in Mesquite, TX. This will be a Hotel show at the Hampton Inn & Suites Conference Center. Both shows will be a 4 AB, 2 LH/SH, 6 HHP format. Lots of great judges, Agility, Raffle and photography by Chanan. Get those entries in early. The hotel block has had more rooms added as we filled it once so get your reservations in to stay where it's most convenient.

That's all we have until December for which you will hear more about next month!

2018 International Show

The Great Lakes Region has the honor of hosting the 2018 International Show for the first time ever in Cleveland, Ohio. The two shows have a combined 778 entries between them. There will be several things taking place at the show. In addition to judging in all 16 rings, there will be an Education Ring, a chance to Meet and Greet the Breeds, Agility competition, an assortment of vendors with lots of items available for purchase and 3 professional photographers on hand to take your cats photos. When all the scoring is done, be sure to stick around for the Best of the Best Presentation and find out who wins the $500 prize from Royal Canin.

Show Report

Queen City Cat Club and Kittyhawk Felines Inc held a show together in Wilmington, Ohio on September 29-30 while a Corgi Dog Show took place at Roberts Centre as well. As always the hall was beautifully lit, spacious and elegant with the drapes that hung across the ceiling. Exhibitors rallied together to provide entries for these two clubs to help make this show a success. Although there is always room for more entries, this show had the highest count in the country. It was first time either club hosted a two day show in a long time. The region was thrilled to see CH, GP, NW Dalee Crackers of La Cattique, owned by Wilma Van Scoyck, achieve his Grand of Distinction in judge Sharon Powell's ring on Sunday.

Hurricane Florence had a lot of folks in the region seeking shelter for themselves and their cats. Fortunately, it appears that no fanciers in the areas affected by the hurricane had any damage.

Congratulations to Lyn Knight, the region's latest applicant to the CFA Judging Program, upon her acceptance as a Longhair Trainee! We know that you'll make us proud!

Freestate Feline Fanciers
(from Bob Dubit)
Freestate Feline Fancier's 2018 6X6 was a great success. We filled both shows! Our outstanding judging line-up with judges from 5 different regions was the main reason for our shows' popularity. Also, our venue was spacious, with plenty of air conditioning, centrally located and only a quarter mile from a Red Roof Inn Plus. Our raffle table had lots of wonderful items including 2 handmade cat quilts and 2 handmade cat afghans. It is great to have such talented club members!

We were thrilled that the rescue we support, Lucky Cat adopted out 7 cats/kittens over the weekend! Freestate has been supporting Lucky Cat for many years and they always have great success adopting out cats and kittens at our show.

Freestate is looking forward to another successful show in 2019!

Fall has come to the Southern region! Clear blue skies, lower temperatures - perfect weather to drive to a cat show! And there's some great shows down our way!

  • October 20-21 - Cat Club of the Palm Beaches holds their show in
Sanford, FL (right outside of Orlando, so really easy to get to)
  • November 3-4 - Cotton States Cat Club always produces one of the
highlight shows in CFA the first weekend of November. They've done so
for 80 years, and this is their anniversary show - you KNOW it's going
to be a fun and spectacular event! Located in north Atlanta.
  • November 10-11 - Capital Cat Fanciers brings us back-to-back shows in
Gaithersburg, MD. Always a great show!
