50TH BAJA 1000: ROD HALL WINS!
Another Record for ORMHOF Legend
Roger Norman waved Rod Hall and his son Chad across the finish line of the Baja 1000 with a special "50/80" flag, then draped the flag across the Hummer on the podium. The flag is in honor of Rod's 50th Baja 1000 and 80th birthday. Roger Norman photo.

Despite the late hour -- it was the middle of the night! -- a large crowd was on hand to witness off-road racing history, as Rod Hall crossed the finish line in La Paz. Rod is the only racer to have competed in all 50 Baja 1000s, wrapping up a storied career with yet another win, bringing his total to a remarkable 25 class wins. He is also the only racer in Baja 1000 history to win overall in a four wheel drive vehicle.

50TH BAJA 1000: PARTY TIME!
Rod Hall's 80th Birthday Party in La Paz
A mariachi band along the malecon in La Paz welcomed Rod's family and friends to his 80th birthday celebration. Party goers were treated to a sneak peek of the documentary, "Baja 50: Rod Hall's Half A Century in the Dirt" by Amy Lerner. The Baja 1000 signals the end of shooting, and the film now heads to the final editing process. We can't wait to see the finished product!  Barbara Rainey photos.

Stories over breakfast with Larry Janesky
Breakfast with Champions: Motorcycle rider Larry Janesky demonstrates how he used his multi-tool to cut cactus barbs out of his arm to free himself after falling during the Baja 1000. Barbara Rainey photo.
How fortunate we were to meet Larry Janesky at our hotel in La Paz! Larry is a successful businessman and motivational speaker from Connecticut, who also happens to love riding motorcycles. He and his son Tanner have chronicled their Baja experiences in a great documentary called, "Into the Dust."

Bob Ham Named AMA Motorcyclist of the Year
by American Motorcyclist Association
Bob Ham, a California activist who led the effort to make the state's renowned off-highway vehicle program a permanent part of the Department of Parks and Recreation, is the American Motorcyclist of the Year.

Awarded annually, the AMA Motorcyclist of the Year designation recognizes the individual or group that had the most profound impact on the world of motorcycling in the previous 12 months. Ham led a coalition of OHV groups during hard-fought negotiations to turn an anti-OHV bill in the legislature into a law that provides stability and funding to the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Program.

"Bob Ham has been a leader in off-road advocacy in California for many years, and his work on Senate Bill 249 and its funding bill (S.B. 159) in 2017 illustrates both his dedication to OHV recreation and his political acumen in navigating the halls of the state legislature," said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman.

PARTING SHOT
Santa Drives a Mini Moke -- Who Knew?
According to Wikipedia, the Mini Moke is a vehicle based on the Mini designed for the British Motor Corporation. The name comes from "Mini"-the car with which the Moke shares many parts-and "Moke", which is an archaic dialect term for donkey.

The initial design was a prototype for a light military vehicle in the style of the American Jeep, but its small wheels and low ground clearance made it impractical as an off-road vehicle. It was subsequently offered in a civilian version as a low-cost, easily maintained utility vehicle.

The Moke finally achieved success as a beach buggy-becoming a popular "cult" vehicle in the Algarve, Seychelles, Australia, the United States and many tropical resorts in the Caribbean. 14,518 Mokes were produced in the UK between 1964 and 1968, 26,000 in Australia between 1966 and 1981, and 10,000 in Portugal between 1980 and 1993 when production of the Moke ended. And it looks like at least one of them wound up at the North Pole!

This fun little car has been reincarnated in a fun little electric model for the 21st Century, and is now available in the USA. Visit www.mokeamerica.com for details. Photo credit: Charles Frick, Mini Moke Club.
