Tip of the Month
New Video Examples of Effective Screening Strategies!

If a picture is worth 1000 words, then how much is a video worth?  You tell us!

We've recently pulled together and posted a 15-minute
video demonstrating a wide range of effective Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) screening strategies being used w ith young children in a variety of real-life settings. We know that no single approach will work with every child.  But we've also watched skilled and patient screeners show us creative ways to:
  • Distract a child during probe insertion by stimulating other senses.
  • Keep little hands busy during screening.
  • Frame the screening process as fun activity
    or game.
  • Use the positive power of
a cooperative child to reassure a reluctant or fearful one.
  • Employ novel toys to keep
    a child's
    attention.
  • Soothe a fussy toddler.
We'd like to share these, and
a few
other tips and cautions, with you. We're keeping this newsletter short in hopes that you'll find time to watch these video examples on KidsHearing.org and that you'll find them to be worth more than 1000 words!
