Six Months Later, Irma by the Numbers

Florida recovery from Hurricane Irma continues to progress six months later due to private and public partnerships—and the hard work of survivors.

Private entities and different levels of government have joined together to advance recovery many ways. Accomplishments include cleaning up, creating solutions to keep displaced survivors near home, developing recovery plans with communities and advancing financial help so Floridians could start repairing and rebuilding.

Much has been accomplished but the recovery partnership will continue working together for the long haul.

Coalition of Tampa Bay leaders taking $20 million transit ask to Washington, D.C.

Tech Data muscles past Publix for the No. 1 spot among Tampa Bay companies

Tech Data Corp.  posted a record $36.8 billion in sales in its just-ended fiscal year, a 40 percent increase from a year earlier.

The gain elevated Tech Data (NASDAQ: TECD) to the No. 1 spot among Florida public companies based on revenue.

Tech Data also surged past  Publix Super Markets  Inc., the Lakeland-based grocery that had  $34.8 billion in total revenue in 2017  and has been the longtime largest company in Tampa Bay.

Bloomberg favors North Carolina, Florida metros over Atlanta for new Apple campus

While Atlanta is considered a favorite — if a  bit less so  in recent weeks — to land  Amazon’s  (NASDAQ: AMZN) $5 billion HQ2, the city might be a long-shot in the Apple campus horserace.

Apple Inc . (NASDAQ: AAPL), in January announced plans for a new U.S. campus as part of a broader plan to create 20,000 jobs in the U.S. The new campus, part of a planned $30 billion in capital expenditure over the next five years, will initially house customer tech support employees.

That  positions Atlanta  — the Bangalore of the U.S. — as a contender.

Bloomberg, however,  doesn't think so .

Based on factors, such as human capital, tax incentives, transportation, existing Apple offices and data center, the company “seems likely to choose among northeastern states such as Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and upstate New York; North Carolina and Florida in the Southeast; and Midwestern states like Illinois and Wisconsin,” Bloomberg noted in a joint analysis with Moody Analytics.
