Long Beach City College Alumni Newsletter
December 2017

  Seasons Greetings!
Message from the Assistant Director, Alumni Development

Dear Alumni,

As I finish up my first month as Assistant Director and come to the end of 2017, I would like to say how very thankful I am for all the amazing alumni and colleagues of the Long Beach City College.

I am looking forward to doing great things for the LBCC Alumni Association and appreciate the overwhelming feedback and support.

As part of my first days in my new role, I have focused my efforts on reaching out to alumni in ways to express my desire to take the seeds that Nancy Yoho has planted and grow the Alumni Association into a robust program to give back to both our past and current students at LBCC.

As we move into 2018, we will be reaching a new milestone at the college and celebrate our 90th Anniversary on  June 16, 2018.  Keep an eye out for the "Save the Date" coming soon.  I encourage all alumni to attend as this is truly a party to celebrate you!

I am so very proud of all the achievements LBCC has made over the years as an institution.  Hard work and perseverance are no stranger to our students, faculty, staff and certainly not to you, our alumni who carry out the mission of LBCC through the work you do every day.

May you celebrate the season with your loved ones and be surrounded by all that makes you happy as we close out the year. I look forward to 2018 being another amazing year for our Alumni!

Warmly,
Jennifer Bourgeois

Alumni Spotlight:  Marom May

On December 5, 2017 Long Beach City College's Student Equity Speaker Series featured Alumnus Marom May - Kickboxing Champion, Army Veteran and EMT at the Pacific Coast Campus.

Marom May shared his incredible story of challenge and triumph as a Cambodian refugee, competitive kickboxer, Army soldier, and what he took away from his time at LBCC.

May and his family came to the United States to flee the genocidal Killing Fields of the Khmer Rouge.  Growing up in Long Beach, May experienced the constant threat of inner-city struggles such as drugs and gang violence.  As a reprieve, he would find solace in training and competing as a Khmer and Muuy Thai kickboxer.

During his career, May was a two-time IKKC (International Kickboxing-Karate Championship) Muay Thai Junior Lightweight champion (1997 & 1998).  In 2010, May enlisted in the US Army Reserves as a 25U Signal Support System Specialist and was deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan from 2013-2014.  May earned an Associates Degree in Fire Science with an Emergency Medical Technician certificate at Long Beach City College and is currently studying to get his bachelor's degree in Radiology at California State University, Dominquez Hills.
