Lake Elmo Inn's Beginnings

The original abstract of the property (now held now by John Schiltz), shows that Joshua Taylor was deeded this property and a large area around it by the U. S. Government in 1849.

Owners of the property have included a number of individuals and entities, including John Henry Glade who bought the property from Joshua Taylor in 1862. It then went to Anna and Christopher Drewer. John H. Lohmann then bought it in 1872. He promptly sold the property to A. B. Stickney, who in turn, sold it to the St. Paul Stillwater and Taylors Falls Railway Company, also in 1872.

The first owner to actually use the property was John McDermott in 1880. John McDermott, born in Ireland in 1842, came with his family to St. Paul in 1854 and began earning his own livelihood at age 13. Working in the employ of others for a short time, he opened what he called "Sample Rooms." His establishment in the village later came to be known as the Lake Elmo Inn. He owned the property until 1883.

When the building was actually built is not known. County records show that the original structure that is part of Lake Elmo Inn we know today was built in 1890. This date, however, is disputed. It is possible that this was when some sort of update was made to the building, or just when it was officially entered into county records.

An 1880 census of the area shows that McDermott was already established as a "saloon keeper." In any event, a tiny notice in The Messenger for March 17, 1883, says, "John McDermott of Lake Elmo has sold his property to George Berschens and will remove to St. Paul."

Enjoy the benefits of clean energy, without putting anything on your roof.

US Solar offers Sunscriptions with no upfront cost. You can save money by subscribing to energy at a Solar Garden, rather than owning the solar panels yourself. The average Minnesotan will save an estimated $300 in the first year, while adding clean, local energy to Xcel's electric grid.

Lake Elmo Rotary's Kindness Campaign

"Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day."
- Sally Koch

Last month we looked for ways to be kind while shopping. We are happy to report that many people found opportunities to return someone's cart, hold open a door, let someone go in line ahead of them, acknowledge/converse with store staff and smile at strangers. We're off to a great start!

Happy February! In the spirit of Valentine's Day, this month we embrace loving acts of random kindness. Join us by sending a Valentine's card to someone you haven't connected with in a while - it's sure to be a day brightener! Pass along a little unexpected love by paying for someone's purchase in the drive through line - this makes the drive through attendant's day special as well! Cards are available at City Hall so...Tag, you're it!

Always remember...kindness is contagious!
