From Trash To Treasure
The other day I rolled back the rim of my Tim Horton's coffee to discover the message 'Win Coffee.' Excited about the prospect of free coffee, but unsure of how to redeem my prize (handing a piece of trash to a restaurant employee behind the counter seems dubious), I went online to learn more. The answer wasn't immediately clear, but I found under Tim Horton's corporate FAQ section this query: "I bought six cups and they were all losers, I thought the odds were 1 in 6?" Corporate response: "While the odds are 1 in 6, we cannot guarantee that you will win on every 6th cup."

I had to laugh a bit at this question because of the apparent ignorance of statistics and probability. And yet, in our lives, we often make the same mistake. We forget that there are no guarantees in a world cursed by sin. Illness, loss of employment, the death of someone close, and brokenness in relationships all shake us to our very core. When it comes to our salvation, our odds quickly plummet even lower - to zero. Imagine the query above on Heaven's FAQ page, "I did everything right, I tried to be a good person. What are my odds?"

Thanks be to God that through Christ, our odds increase. Not 'one to five' or even 'one to one.' When the stone was rolled back from Christ's empty tomb, the probability of our salvation shot up - all the way to 100 percent. Hebrews 7:25 says "He (Jesus) is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them."

While there are no guarantees in our earthly lives, we can be sure of this: Through Christ's death and resurrection, salvation is guaranteed to all who believe in His name. Back to my original investigation, the answer is yes. You really do hand your trash to an employee to redeem your prize. We do the same thing with our sin and brokenness. We give our trash to Jesus and He offers us an eternal reward.

Thank You From The Auction Committee
Thank you for attending the 15th Annual VLHS Auction and Benefit Dinner. Your presence and participation helped generate just over $56,000 that will go to support Student Financial Aid. Awesome!!

While the money raised is always appreciated, the fun and fellowship is the best part. Thanks for not just talking the talk, but also walking the walk.  It's groovy to think that, over the last 15 years, our "little" party has generated well over $800,000 for Valley Lutheran High School.  Thanks again for playing.

Host Families Needed
Host families are needed for future international students at VLHS. These students are attracted to our school because of its academic reputation, but they also give us, as Christians, a unique opportunity to share the Gospel. Host families do receive a monthly stipend. If you are interested in hosting an international student for the 2018-2019 school year, please contact Debbie Davis at 790-1676 or  [email protected] for more information.
Michigan Tech Offering Engineering Camp Scholarship
Michigan Technological University is partnering with Hemlock Semiconductor to offer scholarships for students to attend an engineering summer camp - for free. The scholarship will cover all costs (including transportation) required to attend the Engineering Scholars Program (ESP) at Michigan Tech. A total of 30 students from Midland/Bay/Saginaw counties will be selected.  Last year, one student from Valley Lutheran did attend with this award.

All students currently in grades 9-11 can apply. The application deadline is  April 10 at 5pm. The cover letter and application contain more information about the program.

ESP is a week-long investigation of engineering careers. Students will learn about nine types of engineering, working on group projects, touring labs, and working with Michigan Tech faculty, staff, and graduate students on exciting engineering activities.

Church Leaders Share Ministry Plans as Part of LEAP
LEAP (the Lutheran Education Advancement Plan) involves studies and initiatives guided by some 20 task forces. One task force focuses on inviting and encouraging leaders at area LCMS churches/schools to describe the composition of their educational ministries, and to include plans and proposals for the future. All of the reporting which was made available beginning in 2013 is available yet today, online (at LEAP Ministry Plans / Michigan District, LCMS). Every report is headed by the words "Education Ministry Plan," and at each site, some two to four pages of description and explanation are presented, providing helpful details, available to education leaders at other Lutheran church/school sites.

Information on Vaping - Part 3
This is the conclusion of our three-part series on teenagers and vaping. I hope this information has been helpful. Please feel free to contact Mr. Vincent if you are interested in more information or resources on this topic.

What actions can you take to protect your child?
  1. Educate yourself about vaping and remind your child that you want the best for him or her in all areas of life.
  2. Don't assume anything - Be aware of signs that indicate your child might be hiding a vaping habit or might be considering experimenting with vaping.
  3. Pursue relationships with your child - Have a conversation about vaping. This will help you better understand what your child thinks about the trend. Conversation will deepen the relationship you have with your child. They will be more likely to be open and honest with you about things, including the vaping topic. Conversation and relationship building involves building trust with each other. Maintaining trust is important, as a teenager who knows his parents have lost trust in him is more likely to be secretive about his choices and things with which he is involved.
  4. React out of Love, NOT Condemnation - If your child is vaping be sure you do not react out of anger or condemnation. Focus instead on understanding why they felt the need to vape and hide their actions from you. Your kids will make mistakes because we are all sinful human beings living in a sinful world. However, you can be there for them to help them see their sins and to remind them of the forgiveness Christ offers us. You can be firm but loving in helping them understand the dangers of vaping.
Some questions to ask your child to start a conversation about vaping:
  1. What do you know about vaping? Do your friends vape? Have you ever thought about it?
  2. Why do some people vape even though it is illegal? What does this say about their respect for authority?
  3. What are characteristics of someone who has a habit of self-control? What do you observe about people who don't live with self-control?
  4. Do you think there is a valid place for vaping if someone is using it to stop an addiction to regular cigarettes? Why or why not?
  5. Have you tried vaping? If so, why? And if so, how can we help you to stop?
Final thought: If you discover your child has been vaping, it's important to remember this doesn't define your child's character. He or she has not lost all of the other great qualities and character traits God has blessed them with. Treat your child as you did before. Continue to love him or her and work together through this issue. Do not underestimate the ability you have to influence and protect your child through prayer and reading God's Word.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) FOR 2018-2019
Students electing to take Advanced Placement (AP) courses for the 2018-2019 school year should be completing their AP Course Contracts for each AP course they intend to take. Extra contracts are available in the school office or from Mrs. Mueller. These need to be signed by the student, a parent, and a teacher. As a reminder, students taking an AP course are required to take (and pay for) the corresponding AP exam.

DUAL ENROLLMENT FOR 2018-2019
Students interested in pursuing Dual Enrollment options for the 2018-2019 school year should be completing their Dual Enrollment Student Contract, which requires student and parent signatures. In the next month, Mrs. Mueller will be working closely with those students intending on taking Dual Enrollment courses and who have submitted their contracts.

CLASS OF 2019
The MME is quickly approaching - are you preparing to do well? The MME (Michigan Merit Examination) consists of three exams over three days: an official SAT with Essay, the ACT WorkKeys career readiness certification, and the M-STEP science and social studies examination. The SAT you take on the first day is likely the initial score that will go to colleges you apply to in the fall, so it is important to give it your full effort. Remember that free SAT prep materials are available at Khan Academy online.

SAT PREP COURSE AT VLHS
Valley Lutheran will be hosting a ZAPS Test Prep seminar on Saturday, March 17, from 9am to 3pm. Students attending the seminar will experience practice test scenarios, learn tips on eliminating wrong answers, and receive materials to use at home in their own test prep. Information will be mailed home in the next few weeks or you can check it out here. This is a great opportunity for our current juniors, who will be taking the SAT in April as part of the MME. Scholarships are available for students with financial need. Contact Mrs. Mueller for more information.
