Forum on Microbial Threats, U.S. National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine
Formed in 2017, the One Health Action Collaborative (OHAC) is an ad hoc activity associated with the Forum on Microbial Threats at the U.S. National Academies. The collaborative comprises of both forum members and stakeholders external to the forum from a range of sectors and disciplines associated with One Health. Through ongoing dialogue, information sharing, and deliberations, OHAC works to facilitate and refine implementation of the One Health approach needed to leverage existing programs and to improve effective detection, diagnosis, intervention, and prevention of microbial threats. OHAC’s outputs include publishing discussion papers, providing input on One Health efforts taking place in the U.S. and globally, and hosting seminars and events. In June 2018, OHAC published its first deliverable in the
National Academy of Medicine Perspectives
called
“
Core Competencies in One Health: What Are We Missing?
”

A unique collaboration by researchers from Kansas State University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City is designed to help save lives and improve the quality of life for humans and animals. The platform functions as a clearinghouse for an array of standardized pre-clinical human and animal health data, which researchers mine for cross-species information and to simulate traditional research with animal models – decreasing animal use. Ultimately, the project will accelerate the development of drugs and medical technology for people and animals.

was organized in 2017 for charitable research and training purposes in both the United States and abroad, with a special focus on the Caribbean. A key focus of this conference will be the need for increased dialogue with other sectors and disciplines, as called for in the One Health movement. Other issues addressed will include: the impact of climate change on individual and community health; addressing the challenges faced by communities within this global context; how best to balance sustainable development with healthy environments.

May 15 - August 31, 2018
500+ participants from numerous African countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia completed 20+ trainings and workshops in Addis Ababa, Gondar and Haramaya, Ethiopia, and two different locations in Kenya during the 2018 One Health Summer Institute. Instruction topics ranged from infectious diseases and clinical pharmacy to One Health leadership.

Pretoria, S.A.. Delegates from seven key S. Africa stakeholder organizations met to discuss the value of taking a One Health approach in the country and to strategize what they could do, separately and jointly, to actualize its collaborative implementation there. The organizations represented were SAMA, S Africa Veterinary Association, Health Professions Council of S. Africa, National Institute for Communicable Diseases, U Pretoria, Public Health Association of S Africa, S Africa Nursing Council and the One Health Commission. Among the key discussion outcomes were consensus to anchor One Health in S. Africa in a theme of ‘Prevention’ and to strengthen an existing One Health Forum (network) in S. Africa.

One Health Training at Duke-NUS in Singapore
Singapore. Duke One Health and the National University of Singapore conducted a five-day workshop for scholars from Pakistan and the Philippines to help those international scholars conduct One Health surveillance for novel respiratory viruses which may emerge in their countries at the human-animal interface. The program included an in-depth epidemiological review and laboratory training in detecting influenza viruses, adenoviruses, enteroviruses, and coronaviruses.

George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, USA. Bringing together participants from a diverse set of backgrounds to discuss a multitude of difficult biosecurity issues, the Summer Workshop on Pandemics, Bioterrorism, and Global Health Security demonstrated how such communications between stakeholders can be effective. Though speakers often mentioned how the isolation of different perspectives on how to confront biosecurity challenges has led to needless conflict in the past, the environment of the workshop itself provided a clear contrast to that historical backdrop as participants with different backgrounds interacted in lively discussions.

After working with Ebola in Wes-tern Africa in 2014 he proposed an Exhibit on Epidemics to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (NMNH).
