Alumni Spotlight: Garrett Wright

Garrett Wright serves as the Vice President for the Bay County, Florida Economic Development Alliance. Garrett's focus is to support existing employers in Bay County and recruit new industry into Bay County by building upon the superior assets that the community possesses.
 
Prior to joining the Bay County EDA team, Garrett worked with Eutaw Construction Company, Inc. performing project management on large civil construction projects around the Southeast, including Baton Rouge, LA and Knoxville, TN. The experience in civil construction provided Garrett practical experience with infrastructure development and construction delivery, both of which are vital to success in economic development.
 
Before working with Eutaw Construction, Garrett served in Greater Hattiesburg, MS, as the Director of Business Development, Economic Development at the Area Development Partnership. While at the Area Development Partnership, Garrett was instrumental in numerous successful economic development projects. Successful projects ranged from manufacturing facilities, solar field developments, information technology centers, mixed-use developments, and retail development. A few notable projects include Green Bay Converting, Origis Energy, General Dynamics IT, and Midtown Hattiesburg.

Garrett has been actively involved with Southern Economic Development Council, Elevate Bay's Classroom mentor program, and United Way. Garrett, a Mississippi native, holds a Bachelor's of Science in Construction Engineering and earned a Master's of Science in Economic Development from The University of Southern Mississippi. In his spare time, Garrett enjoys flipping houses, coaching youth sports, hiking, and all other outdoor activities.
 
Capital Campaign Fundraising Part of EDO Management Class 

Capital campaigns have become an important method of funding economic development organizations, and the MSED students in ED 721 Management & Ethics of Economic Development Organization  will learn from POWER 10 fundraisers about seeking increased private sector funding

Examples of their recent clients include Greater Louisville, Inc. Economic Development for Defense Communities Course

The well-received ED 711 Economic Development for Defense Communities will be offered again in summer 2018 from June 4th to July 29th. The on-line course is designed for economic developers whose economy is defense dependent and for military personnel involved with civilian affairs, logistics, and procurement. The course makes extensive use of data analytics to understand the defense industry and how to diversify local economies and includes topics such as the military in the national economy; the social, economic and community impacts of the defense industry; defense contractors and the DoD procurement process; shifts in defense procurement and tools for measuring the economic impacts and mapping the supply chains of the defense industry. The course is taught by Dr. Ed Bee, President and founder of Taimerica Management Company. He has extensive economic development experience with the DoD including community support of the Tinker Air Logistics Center, the Corpus Christi Army Depot, and the Corpus Christi Homeport. Bee has also worked with communities to support DoD needs during the construction of the Kings Bay Submarine Base and the expansion of Ft. Stewart, Georgia.
