Former University of Texas offensive guard and linebacker Tommy Nobis, a 1981 College Football Hall of Fame inductee, passed away Dec. 13. He was 74.

Nobis played for the Longhorns from 1963-65. He was an offensive guard and linebacker on the 1963 Longhorn team which claimed UT's first national championship, the only sophomore starter on that team. He went on to earn every honor available to a lineman during the next two seasons, even though a knee injury would slow him down in 1965. He won the Maxwell Award as the nation's best player and the Outland Trophy as the nation's best lineman. He was a two-time All-American (1964-65) and a three-time All-Southwest Conference honoree (1963-65).
ESPN3 is providing fans access to replays of the historic 60th NFF Annual Awards Dinner and Annual Awards Press Conference, which both took place on Dec. 5 at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City. The NFF has also posted a digital version of the NFF Dinner Program, a 216-page book produced in partnership with IMG College that profiles the event's honorees and provides an in-depth look at the NFF and its history.

Nationally acclaimed ESPN broadcaster Joe Tessitore emceed the dinner ceremony while ESPN reporter and play-by-play commentator Holly Rowe moderated the morning press conference. The Dinner featured the induction of the 2017 College Football Hall of Fame Class and the presentation of the 28th William V. Campbell Trophy®. Memorable speeches from 2017 Hall of Fame inductees Peyton Manning (Tennessee) and coach Steve Spurrier and Campbell Trophy® winner Micah Kiser (Virginia) highlighted the event.
The NFF salutes the members of the 2017 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, presented by Fidelity Investments, that will wrap up their successful careers in an NCAA postseason game. Seven of the 13 members have guided their teams to an FBS bowl game this season. Additionally, two NFF National Scholar-Athletes led their teams to the FCS Playoffs.

2017 Hall of Fame Salute - Specialty Exhibit Delivered by UPS: The College Football Hall of Fame and Chick-fil-A Fan Experience will open its latest exhibit honoring the 2017 Hall of Fame Class in the Specialty Exhibit delivered by UPS. The temporary display will be open through the spring of 2018.

Deck the Hall, Dec. 16 - Jan. 2:  We're decking the Hall this holiday season, kicking off the most wonderful time of the year with activities, treats and holiday decorations. The Hall will be decked out with holiday decorations with daily activities and special appearances by our very own Fumbles the Elf. College Football Hall of Fame Salute to the 2017 Class, Dec. 31: Join the Hall as it celebrates members of the Hall's newest class on New Year's Eve by presenting each inductee with a commemorative glass blade in recognition of their achievements. The Blitz
NFF Board Member and 2016 NFF Distinguished American Award recipient William H. McRaven announced that he will step down as chancellor of the University of Texas System in 2018.

A $15 million fundraising campaign is underway for a new performing arts center at the University of Alabama, led by NFF Board Member and former Alabama Athletics Director Bill Battle and his wife, Mary.

Former California high school football coach Bill Redell , a College Football Hall of Fame player from  Occidental (Calif.), has been named the winner of the Rose Bowl Game's "Coaches Making a Difference" contest. Individuals nominated high school coaches that have made a difference in the lives of student-athletes. The grand prize is a trip to the Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1 featuring Oklahoma against Georgia.

College Football Hall of Famer Tim Brown (Notre Dame)  will be  the keynote speaker at the 2017 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl Kickoff Luncheon at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel on Dec. 22.

College Football Hall of Fame coach Gene Stallings was presented with the fourth Alabama Football Legend Award at a luncheon ahead of the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl.


2017 NFF National Scholar-Athlete/Campbell Trophy® Finalist Updates

2017 Campbell Trophy® winner Micah Kiser and Virginia will play Navy in the 2017 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman on Thursday, Dec. 28, at 1:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) running back Sam Benger  was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November.

Miami (Fla.) wide receiver Braxton Berrios was named a First Team Academic All-American and graduated as the valedictorian of the School of Business Administration last week with a double-major in finance and entrepreneurship. He also earned a number of the team's year-end awards, including the Mariutto Family Scholar-Athlete Award, Offensive Most Valuable Player, Miami Touchdown Club R. Dale Melching Leadership Award, a 2017 Captains' Award and was named to the Victors Club. Berrios and the No. 11 Hurricanes will face No. 6 Wisconsin in the Capital One Orange Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Center Mason Hampton helped Boise State reach 481 yards to total offense while outgaining Oregon by 200 yards in a 38-28 victory in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Broncos finish the 2017 season 11-3, marking the program's 10th 11-win season since joining the FBS in 1996. Hampton was also named a First Team Academic All-American for the second year in a row. 

Running back Justin Jackson and Northwestern will play Kentucky in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl on Friday, Dec. 29, at 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Offensive lineman Justin Lea was named a STATS FCS First Team All-American and a Phil Steele FCS Second Team All-American

Oklahoma State center Brad Lundblade was named a First Team Academic All-American and graduated last week with a degree in marketing. The Cowboys will play Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl on Thursday, Dec. 28, at 5:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. 

Slippery Rock (Pa.) defensive end Marcus Martin was named an AP Division II First Team All-American, and he finished third in the voting for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which is presented to the top overall player in Division II each year. He was also named the Division II National Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-American by the Conference Commissioner's Association. Martin was named a Second Team Academic All-American and graduated with his degree in safety management. He will play in the 93rd Annual East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Jan. 20, which will kick off at 3 p.m. ET and air on the NFL Network. 

Defensive back Chandon Sullivan had four tackles, including one for loss, as he helped Georgia State to the  first bowl victory in school history with a 27-17 win over Western Kentucky in the AutoNation Cure Bowl. The win also gave the Panthers (7-5) their school-record seventh victory of the season. Sullivan was named Georgia State's first Academic All-American, earning first team honors, and he finishes his standout career as the school's all-time leader in interceptions (7) and passes defended (25). Sullivan will play in the Reese's Senior Bowl on Jan. 27 in Mobile, Ala., which will kick off at 2:30 p.m. ET and air on the NFL Network.

Arkansas State cornerback Blaise Taylor  had one tackle and one pass breakup in a loss to Middle Tennessee in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl. Taylor finishes his standout career as the Red Wolves' record holder for career punt return yards and ranked second in Sun Belt history. 

Stephen F. Austin safety Marlon Walls was named the Division I Academic All-American of the Year for football. He graduated over the weekend with a degree in engineering physics and a minor in mathematics in just three and a half years while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. Walls plans to return to Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory to gain more work experience before pursuing a graduate degree in mechanical engineering next fall.

Nebraska linebacker Chris Weber was named a First Team Academic All-American. On pace to graduate in May, he carries a 3.96 GPA in nutrition science and has already been accepted to medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Wide receiver Jake Wieneke led South Dakota State with seven receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown in a loss to James Madison in the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs. With his 59th career touchdown reception, Wieneke took over sole possession of second place in FCS history. He also set a new FCS standard with a reception in 53 consecutive games. Wieneke finished his illustrious career third in FCS history with 5,147 receiving yards while finishing with a school and conference record of 288 receptions. He will play in the 93rd Annual East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Jan. 20, which will kick off at 3 p.m. ET and air on the NFL Network.

Legendary former Arlington Lamar (Texas) high school football coach Eddy Peach, who was honored with the NFF Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter's Legends Award in 2016, passed away Dec. 15. He was 76. Peach (left) is pictured above with NFF COO Matthew Sign, who played for Coach Peach at Lamar.
