Dear Community,

Since the last issue of E-Matters, it seems that our nation and this community are intensifying their focus, efforts and dedication to school safety in the aftermath of the horrific school shooting in Florida. I hope you find comfort in knowing that the North Penn School District (NPSD) has always been and will continue to be committed to school safety. For many years we have implemented programs and physical changes to our schools to safeguard our students and staff.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School also had procedures and plans in place to prevent what occurred in that building. I know I join all of you as we remember the 17 children and educators that were lost and the thousands of others trying to heal from the events of that day. In their memory and in support of our future, NPSD will continue, even strengthen, its efforts in providing a safe environment for all.

On March 14, many students around the nation plan to walk out of classes in an effort to protest gun violence. There are NPSD students who plan to do the same. Our NPSD Administrators are working to make sure our students are safe while doing so. Specifics to that end can be found on our website, here.

We know that improving the mental wellness of our student body is also a vital aspect of creating a safe environment. As part of our efforts in this area, a committee of staff, students, parents and community members have been meeting all year to plan a speakers series called "North Penn Talks" on this topic. The first program of this series will be held this month and is called "Cracked Not Broken, The Kevin Hines Story." Hines is one of only 33 survivors of the more than 1,500 people who have jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge.

The free presentation will be held on Tuesday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in the North Penn High School (NPHS) Auditorium, located at 1340 Valley Forge Road in Lansdale. His talk is about suicide prevention and mental wellness and is the culminating piece for a day focused on student wellness that includes two assemblies for NPHS students. The evening presentation is open to the public. Its purpose is to gather parents, community members, social service groups and all interested individuals to share knowledge on suicide prevention, mental well-being and what can be done to help the youth of this community and beyond.

More information on "Cracked Not Broken, The Kevin Hines Story" can be found in this newsletter. I hope I will see you there.

Sincerely,

Curtis R. Dietrich, Ed.D.
Superintendent, NPSD
