Halverson named Clinical Director
Charlotte Halverson, BSN, COHN-S has a measurable and progressive career serving the agricultural community. When a vacancy became available within AgriSafe as Clinical Director, Charlotte welcomed the opportunity to advance AgriSafe's clinical portfolio. Her actions in this role have been fruitful as she leads the new
Nurse Scholar Program, set to begin classes in May 2018.
Her work in the rural and agricultural health arena began in 1986 in crisis outreach. She transitioned into an occupational safety and health focus following completion of the occupational medicine specialized course through the University of Iowa in 1990. As the director of a tri-sate parish health ministry program for over 20 years, she advanced community-centered farm health and wellness. Charlotte was one of several nurse leaders who founded AgriSafe in 2003 and she served as both former Chair and AgriSafe board member. Charlotte is a well respected Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) whose speaking engagements are received at
the local, state, and national level.
Charlotte's professional honors include:
Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award;
Iowa Center for Agricultural Safety & Health Hall of Fame;
100 Great Iowa Nurses; and
2011 Alumni of Distinction Award - Mercy School of Nursing.

New! Nurse Scholar Program
The AgriSafe Nurse Scholar program is a
distance learning opportunity available to rural nurses.
Distance education (a total of 18 hours),
provided by experienced health & safety
educators will enable rural nurses to
increase
their knowledge base in
identification and
assessment of diseases
related to agricultural work exposures. The first cohort will have a maximum of 35 nurses. Twenty stipends are available for nurses from nonprofit organizations, government agencies, or educational institutions. For nurses in the private sector, the cost of this program is $900.
Application period: Applications for the AgriSafe Nurse Scholar program can be
submitted between February 1, 2018 and May 3, 2018.
Interested applicants must provide proof of licensure in primary state of practice, a
brief educational history/background, and area/type of current nursing practice.

Ag Safety Awareness Week
Across the country, county and state Farm Bureaus are making safety a priority through the Agricultural Safety Awareness Program (ASAP). As part of ASAP, March 4-10 has been designated as Agricultural Safety Awareness Week. U.S. Agricultural Safety and Health Centers will join Farm Bureau in promoting the week with its theme "No One Can Take Your Place." A different safety focus will be highlighted each day of the week.

AgriSafe at Triumph of Ag Expo
AgriSafe attended the 52nd Annual Triumph of Ag Expo in Omaha, NE. Often named the "show in the Midwest," many farmers and ranchers flock to the annual event, held the 2nd week in March.
AgriSafe was pleased to focus on health and safety information for women in agriculture. During this two day expo we raffled off a backpack filled with $120 of personal protective equipment designed just for farm women.

FREE Training: Respiratory Hazards in Grain Handling
AgriSafe in partnership with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS) is offering health and safety training to grain handling workers through training workshops.
Training topics include confined space grain bin entry, respiratory protection program and prevention strategies.
Target audience includes agricultural producers, workers in high-hazard grain operations and English and non-English speaking grain handling workers.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is pleased to announce open registration for the
2nd International Symposium to Advance Total Worker Health®
. The conference will be held at the Natcher Conference Center, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland, near Washington, DC. The purpose of the conference is to convene researchers and practitioners from the United States and abroad that are making important contributions to advance Total Worker Health research and practice.
