March 5, 2018
From the Desk of Ellen Knippel, Principal

Dear Parents,
Spring has peeked its beautiful head a few times in the past week. We look forward to warmer breezes and budding trees and flowers! I have always believed that once March is upon us, the cold of winter is behind us (please don't blame me if we get an unexpected snowstorm!). Your children have fully enjoyed being outside on these lovely days. Please continue to send boots and snow gear as the grassy areas can be muddy and our playground can be wet from the spring rains.

This week we will be taking IOWA tests in Grades 2-7. The Archdiocese has been involved in a longitudinal study with all scores from the schools in the Diocese. We use these scores in-house to make plans for the new school year. As an example, using this data will help us to develop and strengthen specific programming across all grade levels in the year ahead. More information regarding this will be forthcoming. Please be sure your child has a good breakfast, gets plenty of rest, and arrives on time in the week ahead.  (Classes begin testing at 7:45.)

I hope many of you were able to attend the first day of our Parish Mission: All is Holy. The presentation by Jeanne Cotter Sunday morning along with the concert on Sunday evening were both moving experiences. There are still 2 more opportunities to hear Jeanne speak.  Please join us on Monday and/or Tuesday evening at 6pm. It is guaranteed to speak to your heart!

Blessings!
Mrs. Knippel

FoodAllergyWhat is a Food Allergy
Food allergy is a serious and potentially life-threatening medical condition affecting up to 15 million Americans. One in every 13 children has a food allergy - that's about 2 in every U.S. classroom. And every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room.
What Causes a Food Allergy?
The job of the body's immune system is to identify and destroy germs (such as bacterial or viruses) that make you sick. A food allergy happens when your immune system overreacts to a harmless food protein - an allergen.
In the U.S. the eight most common food allergens are milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish.
Family history appears to play a role in whether someone develops a food allergy. If you have other kinds of allergic reactions, like eczema or hay fever, you have a greater risk of a food allergy. This is also true of asthma.
Food Allergies Are Serious
Food allergy may occur in response to any food, and some people are allergic to more than one food. Food allergies may start in childhood or as an adult.
All food allergies have one thing in common: They are potentially serious. Always take food allergies - and the people who live with them -seriously.
Food allergy reactions can vary unpredictably from mild to severe. Mild food allergy reactions may involve only a few hives or minor abdominal pain, though some food allergy reactions progress to severe anaphylaxis with low blood pressure and loss of consciousness.
Food Allergies Have No Cure
Currently, there is no cure for food allergies. The only way to prevent reactions is to completely avoid the foods you are allergic to.
Understanding Food Labels
Reading every food label, every time, is one of the best ways to keep you or your loved one safe. Food Allergy Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) help make it easier to understand food labels so that you can safely manage your child's food allergies. This law requires that food labels show in plain English when a "major food allergen" or any ingredient that contains protein from a major food allergen is added to an ingredient in that product.
If a product has a precautionary warning (e.g., May Contain...) many allergist recommend you AVOID this product.
Classroom Corner
Third graders performed as Wax Museum characters for parents and students.

In science, 4th graders continue to solve problems using the engineering design process. Last week, they worked collaboratively to create a balloon car that could travel the farthest distance. Only five materials were made available. Our farthest traveling balloon car shocked everyone, traveling over 10 feet!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! To celebrate, the first grade students read Dr. Seuss books and studied his unique characters. They each designed their own "new" character! They were so creative! They ended the week by following a recipe to make green eggs and ham!

Calling all Catholic boys who'd like to play baseball this summer!
For the past seven years, a growing group of Catholic boys has played baseball together in the broader Lake Country Youth Baseball recreational program. The teams are led by Catholic fathers who work with other available dads to teach boys the fundamentals of the game, develop character, build strong friendships, and instill Catholic virtues while enjoying the game of baseball. The effort has yielded strong dividends on the field and off, for boys and their families. This year, teams are available for boys currently in K4/K5 (T-ball), 1st/2nd grade (coach-pitch), 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, 7th/8th grade (all player-pitch). No previous playing experience is required.

The program is based in Hartland with practices and games played in the Lake Country area. The season runs from early May through July and typically involves 2-3 nights per week. Fees range from $50 to $134, depending on age (plus a 5-hour volunteer commitment per family). Teams may fill up so please get your registration in early. To register, please email Tim Gibbons with your name, contact information and the names and grade levels of boys to be registered. Or call Tim at (262) 510-3086 for more information.
