There's Still Time to Snag The
Chamber's Holiday Ornament
Chamber offices open until 1 p.m. today
The Chamber recently unveiled a custom-made Christmas tree ornament that will serve as a fundraiser for the organization and promote local pride.
The ornament was designed by Chamber president, Tricia Maple, and manufactured by
Nelson's Fine Art & Gifts
in Steubenville. It features the names of the 17 cities and villages that make up Jefferson County on a clear, acrylic ornament that is cut in the shape of the county. Ornaments may be purchased at the Chamber offices at 630 Market Street in Steubenville until 1 p.m. today. The price is $8.50 for those purchased at the Chamber and $10 for those shipped anywhere in the United States. The shipped ornaments have a gift card enclosed with a personal message from the purchaser and a thank you from the Chamber for supporting its local work. Over $3300 in receipts have been logged so far! Don't forget to enter the Chamber's annual "Shift Your Shopping" receipt drawing for a chance to win $500 cash the day after Christmas. Here's how it works.
Gather all of your receipts from local spending that you do from November 1st, 2018 until Christmas Day. Complete the
online form
on the Chamber's website,
www.jeffersoncountychamber.com
and remember to upload pictures of your receipts before submitting. You may also enter by sending or dropping off your receipt copies along with name, address and phone number to the Chamber offices at 630 Market Street, Steubenville, OH 43952. They must be received
by
Christmas Day.
For every $50 spent locally, one entry in your name will be entered in the drawing. Purchases may be combined to reach this amount - they need not be a single purchase totaling $50 or more. For example, if you spent $10 in gas, $15 at a restaurant and $75 at a local store, this would earn you two entries. There is no limit to how many entries you may earn and qualifying purchases include
any
business in Jefferson County in addition to
chamber member
businesses located outside the county (Weirton, Wheeling, etc.) Check the membership directory on the Chamber's website to see a complete list of members.

Franchisee Clarification Bill
Set to Become Law
This week, the Ohio Senate approved HB 494 by a vote of 23-9 and then the Ohio House of Representatives agreed to the changes made by the Senate by a vote of 60-25. This bill further clarifies that the employees of a franchisee will not be considered employees of a franchisor for the purposes of Ohio Minimum Fair Wage Standards, Workers’ Compensation, Unemployment Compensation, or Income Tax laws.
Through the legislative process, the Senate Transportation, Commerce, and Workforce Committee made two changes to the bill; one being a technical amendment and the second being the establishment of the Women-owned Business Enterprise Program by the Department of Administrative Services.

Today in History
- December 21, 1937 -
Walt Disney premiered the first feature-length, cel-animated film,
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
, at the Carthay Circle Theatre. Walt Disney had been itching to tell his version of the Grimms' Fairy Tale since he was 15. However, many people, including Disney's wife, Lillian, thought the movie would bomb, especially after the budget ballooned from $250,000 to $1.5 million, an enormous sum in 1937. The chattering class even dubbed it "Disney's Folly," and Disney had to mortgage his house to finish the film.
At the Carthay Circle Theatre, however, the film received a standing ovation from a crowd that included luminaries such as Judy Garland and Marlene Dietrich. The reviews were glowing, and
Snow White
grossed over $7.8 million internationally. All told, across the decades and rerelease after rerelease,
Snow White
has earned $418 million. In 1939, it was given a special Academy Award, since no category had yet to be designated for Best Animated Feature (that would not happen until 2001).
Snow White
also proved there was a market for full-length animated films, and Disney wasted no time in capitalizing on the public's interest. In 1940, he released
Pinocchio
and
Fantasia
.
Dumbo
and
Bambi
soon followed. Today, in 2018, the Disney animated feature is part of international pop culture, and animated features are considered an art form equivalent to its live-action counterparts, all because an American visionary and entrepreneur dared to dream and was willing to risk it all to fulfill that dream.
