City Proceeds with Exploration of Tiny Homes Pilot Program for Homeless Residents

Yesterday, the City Council voted to pursue a Tiny Homes pilot program to house our city's most vulnerable residents. The program - projected to launch in the next year - seeks to build a community of tiny homes for homeless residents with on-site management, security and social services.

Over the coming weeks and months, our staff in the Housing Department will undertake a thorough process to carefully analyze potential sites for a Tiny Homes community and conduct extensive outreach to surrounding neighborhoods. As part of the site evaluation criteria approved by the City Council, the Housing Department will prioritize sites that are further away from schools and residences. Following this evaluation and outreach process, the Housing Department will return to the City Council with a recommendation on three or fewer initial sites.

At the recommendation of the Mayor, the Housing Department will also work with external partners and industry experts to explore potential strategies for lowering the cost of constructing tiny homes, such as the use of volunteer labor and donated/non-conventional construction materials, and opportunities to leverage private, philanthropic funding.

You can find more information on this project on the City's website.

Watch the video by community advocates, nonprofit homelessness organizations, City Councilmembers and Mayor Liccardo that explains why this program is a key addition to our toolkit as we work to eliminate homelessness. You can also read Mayor Liccardo's detailed thoughts on why Tiny Homes represent a cost-effective, rapid and dignified strategy to rapidly house our homeless residents to make our neighborhoods safer.

SJC Airport Bus Shuttles to Transition to All-Electric Fleet

Last month, the City Council approved the purchase of an entirely electric San Jose International Airport bus fleet.

The new fleet, to hit streets next year, will eliminate 3.1 million pounds of greenhouse gasses from San Jose during its lifetime, and represents a step towards Mayor Liccardo's long-term goal to convert every bus and shuttle operating on San Jose streets to 100% ghg-free, electric models.
