I come to Advent with gratitude for the great things God has done. This Advent I also come with gratitude for the tough times and the ways God has used the tears, the losses, and the uncertain times to bring me closer to Him in tough times until the blessings and shouts of joy return.
I see "sowing in tears" when I focus on taking my next step in the journey accompanied by sadness or loss of hope. Author Eugene Peterson summarized it, saying, "All suffering, all pain, all emptiness, all disappointment is seed: sow it in God and he will, finally, bring a crop of joy from it." Small seeds are planted for God's Kingdom along the journey when I learn from my disappointments, keep moving, and encourage others. Small steps taken include taking a meal to a friend, sending a card, reaching out with a hug, praying, supporting outreach ministries, providing grace, or lending a listening ear.
In preparation for Christmas, I will sing "Joy to the World" mindful of that carol's third verse:
No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground:
He comes to make His blessings flow.
During Advent, I will find joy in remembering God's gift in the form of Baby Jesus, joy in celebrating the Holy Spirit and God's presence with me today, and joy in the anticipation of Jesus' promises to return.
