Heroes of the Week

Angela Drevlow

Congratulations to this week's Heroes Tami Thurston and Angela Drevlow! We hope you enjoy your up-close parking spot.

A Note to Angela Drevlow, 1st Grade Teacher:
"Angela - You are such an inspiration to all who work alongside you. You are passionate and innovative in your teaching. We love how your heart for sharing Christ's love is reflected in your classroom and how you treat others. And on top of that, you do a fabulous job loving your family too! We love seeing you smile each day! (heart) 4th Grade Team

A Note to Tami Thurston, English Teacher:
"Tami is a hero...period! She has played an important roll in shaping who we are as Mariners Christian School through her sincerity and authentic nature. Tami follows Jesus' example and walks out Biblical living everyday. Here are just a few examples:

She puts others before herself. Philippians 2:3 - "Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."

She gives her best effort in everything she does. Colosians 3:23 - "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord not for human masters."

She frequently provides comedic relief, whether we need it or not. Proverbs 17:32 - "A cheerful heart is good medicine" and Proverbs 15:13 - "A joyful heart makes a cheerful face."

She loves through discipline and holds high expectations for self and students. Her model of discipline is: Hebrews 12:11 - "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."

She encourages all of us to be our best. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 - "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing."

She lives out her faith and uses her gifts for God's glory. 1 Peter 4:10 - "As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace."

She follows God's example of making all things new...including constantly updating and improving her lessons plans on a daily basis. Isaiah 43:18-19 - "Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing."

We appreciate you Tami!

Celebrating Joy Found in Giving
Monday was the culmination of our Christmas Gift Drive. We were overwhelmed to see the incredibly generous response from our MCS community and thrilled to be able to bless Project Giving Light with an abundance of gifts. They will not only be able to host a Christmas Celebration at the school they have adopted, but will also be able to host a Christmas Celebration for the children at Mercy House Homeless Shelter. We were also able to donate some of the gift cards that were collected to the Shalimar community.

The message in Elementary & Middle School chapels this week was rooted in two truths that were extracted from a video clip from the movie "ELF".
The message in Elementary & Middle School chapels this week was rooted in two truths that were extracted from a video clip from the movie "ELF".We highlighted two moments in this clip:

The first was when Buddy, the elf, declares boldly, "NO IT'S NOT!" to the store manager's suggestion that the decorated space in the department store was "The North Pole." Buddy is from the North Pole and he knows that this space is definitely not the North Pole.

The second is when Buddy goes absolutely nuts with enthusiasm over the announcement that Santa is coming to the store the following day at 10 AM.

CONNECTIONS FOR THE STUDENTS:
  1. Advent is a season set aside for meditating on the "Coming" of Jesus.  It is a time to reflect on the fact that Jesus came and that His presence is what allows us to sing the well-known line of the Christmas carol, "O, Holy Night" - "A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices." Our world has many weary places that need the hope of Christ to break through. But, our culture and even our own hearts are tempted to fill the Christmas season with expectations of gifts, traditions, etc. Just like Buddy, we have to say, "NO, IT'S NOT!" when we hear messages from culture or our own hearts tempting us to believe Christmas is more about the traditions than it is about Jesus.

  2. We asked this question: "Why was Buddy the only person in the room that got so excited about the announcement that Santa was coming?" The answer: Buddy was the only one in the room that KNEW Santa. Everyone else knew "OF" Santa. Buddy had spent time with Santa in his workshop, he knew the sound of his laugh, the love in his eyes, etc. Students were challenged to consider whether they "KNOW OF" Jesus (the stories, the verses about Him, etc.), or whether they "KNOW" Jesus.
Middle School students got to respond with action at the end of their "Wrap & Pray" chapel. They took the gifts that had been collected, and in Homeroom groups wrapped them. After all the gifts were wrapped they spent time praying that the children who receive the gifts will experience hope in the weary places of their own lives and that Jesus would break through.

Elementary students (1st-5th grade) got to respond with action at the end of their "Make & Pray" chapels. They were given a blank card and got to pause in quiet for a moment to hear the words of hope the Holy Spirit might want to say to someone who is experiencing loneliness or weariness this Christmas. They then created beautiful Christmas cards that will be given to the children receiving gifts and elderly residents at a retirement home that our Middle School band students will be visiting and sharing music with on Friday. We closed by praying over these cards and that the words of hope will bless whomever they will be handed to.

HSPT Private School Entrance Exam Review Sessions
We are offering four review sessions to help our MCS students prepare for private school entrance exams, specifically the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE).   Math and English will be reviewed in each session.  All four sessions will be different, so we recommend you attend all four. Students are encouraged to purchase the HSPT or ISEE test books available at Barnes and Nobel or online.  Any version of the HSPT or ISEE test book is fine. This book is recommended, not required.

Students may attend any or all of the following sessions:
  • Wednesday, December 6th (3:00-4:30pm)
  • Wednesday, December 13th (3:00-4:30pm)
  • Wednesday, December 20th (3:00-4:30pm)
  • Wednesday, January 10th (3:00-4:30pm)

Location: Meet in Mrs. Thurston's room at the start of each session

The sessions are long, but are designed to allow review of both Math and English. We will also provide a short snack break. These sessions should provide a good stretching of our students' "test endurance." Generally, entrance exam testing periods are three to fours hours in length. Most middle school students are not used to sitting and testing for so long!

All four sessions are included in the $40 fee. Your FACTS account will be billed after the first session you attend.

Please RSVP to [email protected] if your child will be attending any sessions.

***Please let us know if you'd like to donate snack items for these review sessions. It would be much appreciated by the hungry students.
