As we enter our 40th year, we look back at all we have accomplished. Clay Humane has served as a voice for the animals through campaigns in our communities and schools aimed at fostering humane attitudes toward all living creatures. Since its inception, The Society has sterilized more than 98,000 animals, including 21,000 cats via our free cat sterilization program. Through the years, hundreds of orphaned or injured wildlife species have also been rehabilitated and successfully returned to their native habitats with the hope of preserving nature for the generations that follow. And with only smiles as payment, groups of dedicated volunteers visit seniors in nursing homes and lend crucial assistance to disabled and disadvantaged persons with pets.

For many, the holiday season is a time to give back to family, friends and community. As you embrace the festive spirit and take the time to volunteer and help those in need, it's important that you don't forget to give back to the pets in your life, as well. In fact, this is a great time to get your kids involved in different types of service projects geared toward animals.

Here are 20 acts of animal kindness that you can partake in with your family:

|
- Volunteer to take your elderly neighbor's dog for a walk every once in a while. He probably doesn't get to go out as much as he would like to!
- Clip coupons for pet food and share them with owners who may be struggling a bit financially. This is a great way to make sure that no pet goes hungry this holiday season.
- Donate pet toys, food, blankets or beds to a local animal shelter.
- Research pet food companies to see if you can buy products from a line that puts a portion of its proceeds toward purchasing supplies or medical care for animals in need.
- Foster a dog or cat until he or she can be placed with a forever family.
- Volunteer to help at a local shelter adoption event.
- Offer to watch over your neighbor's pets when she goes on vacation. They'll be happy to see a familiar face!
- Get your furry friend microchipped. That way, you can find him if he somehow manages to slip out your back door during the busy holiday season.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter. These facilities are always looking for people to help socialize, groom, and feed the animals.

Young Marine Corporal Michael Manley has been in the Atlantic Coast Young Marines since March of 2016. The unit’s main driving force is youth character development and leadership. They accomplish this by veterans appreciation events and community service. In September, he wanted to help the people that were going to be affected by the hurricane. His idea was to gather food and supplies for animals who were abandoned. With the help of fellow young marines, his mother and his Unit Commander, Kimberly Gibbons, he gathered much needed items of food and supplies.

For the past three years, Dylan Caldwell (8 yrs old) has chosen to ask his peers for donations to Clay Humane on his birthday in lieu of gifts. This has become a tradition that Dylan and his friends look forward to each year which demonstrates that the spirit of giving continues to shine throughout our community.

Why We Give to Animal Charities
|
|
Between three and four million dogs and cats are euthanized every year in the United States. And according to Charity Navigator, a non-profit organization that rates American charities by evaluating their organizational efficiency and capacity, the biggest animal-based charities have annual revenues of only one-tenth of those of the largest charities in the U.S. In 2006, the American Red Cross, for example, reported over $3 billion in revenue while Food for the Poor and the American Cancer Society reported revenues of over $1 billion each. In contrast, the two most high profile animal welfare organizations in the U.S., the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), reported revenues of approximately $100 million and $75 million, respectively. All the foregoing numbers may seem high, but it isn’t enough to fund all the good causes we, as a society, might like. So why choose organizations that benefit animals and/or pet owners?

Clay Humane is always excited to visit their friends at the WE Cherry Elementary Junior Humane Society and talk about animals! These students, led by the amazing Rebekah Harp, continually spread the message of responsible pet ownership. The kids practice “random acts of kindness” at school, home and throughout the community.
